What do the adjoining properties do? If the general rule for them is some restriction, then by all means do it. If not, the second a buck steps off the lease somebody else will definitely drop it!

Fps, How much of a different from 18" to 26 " barrel ?
avg. joe replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
If you research it, you will find there is not a lot of difference. Will there be some? probably, but not enough to make a big difference in the ballistics. -
Hope all goes well for you. After this is over and done, it will change your whole look at life. Get well soon, hunting season is upon us!

A day that I will never forget. It still brings a tear to my eyes when I think of it. Thank You and God Bless all that lost there lives and all that serve!

Berry picker who had no paper!

A few years ago we had a buck on trail cam that was very thin, similar to this one. We wondered what was up also. But by the end of September he had put weight back on and was looking better, but not great. We don't know the final result, as we never got anymore pics of him after the beginning of October. Keep an eye on him and if he continues to lose weight, nature will take its course.

A trip to Alaska is an unforgettable thing. I had it on my bucket list as "Go to Alaska". After 4 trips to Alaska now, my bucket list has changed to "Go back to Alaska"!!!

OK, so aside from the back and forth over what somebody posted, can we get back to the topic. CWD is spreading in PA. It doesn't stop at the state line, even though that would be nice if it did. If it hits NY, which it probably will, if it isn't already here somewhere, do we have any hope of stopping it again? The prions that cause the disease can remain in the environment for years. That is why I wonder how we managed to control it and nobody else has. Or as was stated earlier, is it already here, just not yet detected. If so, then what?
-
With New York being the only state that had CWD show up once and seems to not have reared its ugly head again, are we just that lucky, or is it still out there, just undetected so far? Every other state it has showed up in has had it spread further in the herd. Pennsylvania has an ever expanding Disease Management Area. It has been detected in Ohio and Maryland and spread through the herd. Or are there environmental conditions in New York that are helping? I would like to think (hope) that maybe we won't see it again in New York, but the odds seem against it. What do you think?

Amazing how we all survived with no bike helmets, drinking from the garden hose and a million other things that are now forgotten or frowned upon!!!

My feeders go up on Mothers day. Had males show up within a couple hours of putting it out. Just had the first female show up the end of last week.
-
I would notify the sheriffs department. They definitely belong to somebody, a couple head are worth a few dollars and somebody must know they are missing. They may be a couple of feeder steers that somebody nearby may have just bought. If they are bulls, be aware they are around. The younger bulls may be starting to feel "manly" and can sometimes be aggressive. The only problem is, they can wander a long ways. When the nearest heifer comes into heat that is probably where they will end up!

Always fished PA up until this year. Is there any restriction on lead sinkers or jigs in NY? I looked through the regs and couldn't find anything on being able to use lead or having to use non-lead alternatives. Thanks in advance for any info on this!

Birdhunter, thanks for the info, I may check those out. It isn't quite it , but may be something to look at. They look like those, only the riser was clear and the float rose thru the liquid on a trip. I looked through some old pics hoping to find something that would either jar my memory or show as an example but found nothing. Culvercreek, I will look at those also. It has been a long time since I used tip ups and remember lots of hassles and freeze ups. Looks like lots of changes in the last 30+ years.
-
Many years ago I had a couple of tip-ups that I just loved. They were the most freeze proof things ever. The "flag" was more or less an orange float inside of a clear tube full of, or most likely antifreeze. It was held down with a magnet on the spool. Over the years they were either lost or loaned and never returned. Anybody ever have any of these? Do they still make them? Now that I have the time to get back into ice fishing I would like to get a couple of them.

To me it has always been more than a sport. Spending time alone or with friends and family, almost more a religion than a sport. It isn't always about how big or how many. Some of the best times I've had hunting I came home empty handed but fulfilled. Some want it to be a sport by keeping score per se, by counting sucess in numbers of birds harvested or inches of antler. Call it whatever you like, I call it an inner peace!

He must be at a Hillary lost sob fest!

I would have thought the weather would stall deer movement too, but I have seen deer everyday so far in 9J. I think the weather kept hunter participation down and the deer haven't been pressed as usual.

Use the perforated pipe, they can't plug the holes and will move on. Supposedly the sound of running water is something they can't tolerate.

When working up a load. what is the first thing you look for as a high pressure indicator? I usually use a couple at once. How the shell ejects (on a bolt or slide action) and how the primer looks.

The crossbow inclusion will not be the total answer to controlling the population. All the cries that the crossbow is such a huge advantage in archery season is usually screamed out by those who (1) never shot or hunted with a crossbow (2) don't want any other group infringing on "their" hunting season (3) can't afford one. In Pennsylvania, when crossbow was included in archery for the first time, the license sales and deer kill both fell within normal fluctuations. I haven't harvested any more deer in PA with the crossbow than I normally would have with the bow. I suppose that in an area with excessive deer population, it may bring out a few more hunters, but I doubt it would ever be enough to solve the problem.

I have to agree. I can't see why anybody would want to use them for hunting.

I was talking to a fellow hunter and we got onto the subject of ammo. He stated that he uses FMJ's for deer. Without wanting to get into an argument about it, I just changed the path and went from there. I looked (or tried to find) if FMJ's are even legal for deer in NY. I know Pennsylvania and others state that only expanding type bullets are legal for big game. Are they legal in NY?

Dry preservative. Just flesh, clean and rub it into the hide.

Back when I lived in PA I worked at a taxidermy shop. If it is a GOOD shop there is usually a lot of work. The first few weeks of deer season, especially the gun season, is spent doing nothing but caping and skull cleaning. Then forms need to be ordered and delivered. It is usually well into January before any of the previous years mounts were even started. We tried to do them in order of being received, but when a freezer is full of several hundred capes it isn't even possible to sort through and find a specific customer. As far a tanning, very few are tanned anymore. So, it is usually more a matter of the sheer volume of mounts than anything else. In a year we would have anywhere from 500 to 700 mounts. That amounted to 10 to 15 mounts per week. So, as was said, if you want it quick, take it to a less than reputable taxidermist, or find somebody who limits the amount of work they do.
