Second year into the show. Can be viewed on-demand thru the Paramount channel. Not one of those shows you can tune into and understand all that's going on! Need to view it from beginning (S1Ep1) to get a real sense of all the dis-functionality and plot twists. Yeah Costner is pretty good, but I've come to hate his character. Along with the "bitch" of a daughter. BUT .. love her watering trough nude bath scene. No more spoilers....

Holy crap dude, 40 stands to choose from. I had 11X on ~60ac at one time & it was more of a spin the wheel as to where to sit at any specific time. Due to the geometry of my former property, factoring in wind direction didn't come into play. MOOG, must be quite a decision every hunt as where to sit...! Gives being in the right place at the right time a whole new decision making process..!?!

New Xbow legislation for 2019 introduced
nyslowhand replied to nyslowhand's topic in CrossBow Hunting
Zero, nada, nothing! Same as in past several years, new Xbow legislation stagnated in the Enviro Conser sub-committee. Wednesday I got an eMail from NYCC, titled "Summer 2019 Update" or something to that effect. Included was - membership went up 33%, more to make squeaky wheel even louder, determined to make changes, couple of show/event dates, blah, blah... More of cheer-leading or inspirational update than informational. Sorry NYCC, JMO. Suggestion for 2020 (NYCC's) Xbow proposed legislation: Forget all the prior legislative bill's line items, like #, width, set-back, season dates, full inclusion, etc. One line item - Transfer FULL responsibility to the NYS DEC to investigate & implement any changes to current Xbow laws as deemed appropriate. -
Vinyl planks are generally more $/sq' than wood laminates. Not sure why you'd want vinyl in areas that aren't prone to water &/or spills. Kids, pets,..? Had very good luck with Shaw's vinyl plank flooring from Home Depot in kitchen and adjoining laundry room. Brand/style was much thicker (~6mm) than normal ~3mm laminate planks. NO underlayments or leveling needed! Can order any wood-like style and return all un-opened cartons, even special ordered items. IRC, when being installed there was very minimal expansion gaps left along the walls. Regular carpet end/transition molding was used between rug/planks. Whatever floats your boat!!!

Any specific reason you can only use Millennium straps? Always use Tractor Supply 12' x 2k# red ratchet straps on my ladder stand platform, top & bottom. If you're talking about hang-ons or climbers, guess I may not have helped!!?!! My thinking (right or wrong?) was to have all ladder stand in place in July. My assumption was deer had time to get use to them. Then you read about the people moving stands around during the season and having good luck immediately after! Who knows..... The idea of not entering you hunting area after Labor Day sure sounds like a good idea, maybe! I don't do any wood in the woods after that date, but the temptation to check my cams is TOO great to resist. My assumption is if the deer smell your scent from occasional ventures to check cams and they don't see or perceive any danger, won't this carry-over to you entering the woods during hunting season? Conversely, I there is no intrusion or scent for a couple months prior to the season and then you enter the woods, won't they be alarmed? Of course, as scent-free as you think you are, guessing you're not. Who knows.... Whatever works!!!!

Can you keep a buck on. Your property??
nyslowhand replied to G-Man's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Interesting question I also stumbled upon when I had several cams on a 60ac property. Began to see an annual BB travel semi-pattern. Generally saw bachelor groups wandering around (a few times) in an aimless manner during the July time frame when there was clearly NO food sources making them travel there Were they sort of checking out where the girls were living? Then again, I often saw bucks (some strangers) traveling around in places I had never seen them before, around the last week of October. Were they checking out where the girls were? I'm assuming this to be true...!?!Of course, all pre-rut behavior. We all know "all bets are off" when the rut begins for any predictable travel patterns!!! All confirming my hunting strategy, if you know where the girls are, the boys are bound to show up! -
OMG.. I'll never get that image out of my mind. Curse you Moog! Like Biz mentioned, you can hide your profile in the dark interior of a blind by not letting a lot of light into the blind and wearing dark clothing &/or a mask/face paint. Bigger issue is when you have fully opened windows in the rear also, believe the deer see a distinct profile regardless of what clothing you're wearing. Suppose having windows open while hunting and closed when you're not could give deer some reason to be wary of the blind. JMO, elevate blind are a completely different scenario!

Is it impolite to shoot your nieces pit bull ?
nyslowhand replied to Nomad's topic in General Chit Chat
I agree Pits get a bad rap mainly due to ownership issues. But ... there is a certain amount of inherent aggressiveness bred into them that's not suitable for every prospective dog owner &/or situation. If you're going to adopt/own a dog, you need to be the Alpha in that relationship, NOT the mommy, daddy or an equal. Clearly, there will be a lot of love & companionship involved, but you still need to be the "leader of the pack". This air of confidence carries over to dog encounters as well, to a point! Never trust a small, lap-dog or what the owner says about its' disposition. They've been conditioned to encourage cuddling, affection, treats and anyone threatening that relationship with its' mommy/daddy is confronted by the dog. Just when I think I've learnt a lot about dogs and their behavior over the years, I'm baffled by the LE K9 scenario. Protective, aggressive & attack dog during its' day job, then flip the switch & it becomes a loyal, loving family dog when off-duty. Baffling...Amazing! -
Is it impolite to shoot your nieces pit bull ?
nyslowhand replied to Nomad's topic in General Chit Chat
Sorry BELO, but your niece is an idiot. Having any breed of dog running among the ~40 guests that has known aggression towards specific (males) people and not anticipating problems is just ... insane! There's a whole other debate or discussion about packing a sidearm at a family get-together and possibly firing a shot at the attacking dog in a crowd, if the opportunity .... Lot of history about pitbulls over the past couple of centuries, mainly human's intentionally breeding them to be aggressive and fighting dogs. Like any other breed in this guard, attack or fighting category, they will obviously be some that the instinct to attack can never be trained out of them completely. Rotties, Sheperds, Dobermans, etc. Love em or hate em, we've made them what they are! JMO, most dog bite attacks are from the ankle-bitter small dogs, they just aren't reported or as extreme as Pitbull encounters. Any one adopting a potentially aggressive dog (any breed) that thinks they're also getting the macho-dog owner label soon realizes they can NOT handle them. Humane shelters are full of Pit and Pit-mix dogs the owners were forced to give up. Not the ideal choice for a family dog!!!! Not to mention many of these breeds are on the insurance institute's no policy available list if they are in the home. -
Advice for a new archery program
nyslowhand replied to Culvercreek hunt club's topic in Greater Rochester Southern Tier QDMA
Bob, isn't the bigger issue trying to get a school interested in the archery program, rather than what equipment is best? IDK, but assuming a more rural school district might be more inclined to consider this. Assuming you'll be fighting all the animal rights, anti-hunting soccer moms that could possibly dominate a school board. What do I know.... You probably have considered this, but you might have better luck convincing a local R&G club to put on regular seminars or simply allow their facilities to be used for this same archery intro program!??! Aside from all my pessimism, sounds like a great program and kudos to your branch of QDMA for even considering this campaign! Anything that encourages our youth to put down their cell phone or X-box and go outdoors would make them better adults. JMO... -
late inning corn
nyslowhand replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I'm by NO means a QDM expert, but you seem to be talking about 2 separate food sources. JMO, clover is a true QDM food source for many different types of wildlife mainly during the spring/summer months when they need the growth nutrition clover provides. What your OP was about was crops that ripen/mature around deer hunting season, to attract them to a certain area. Clearly, one could argue that fall crops also help wildlife "bulk-up" for the coming winter months, but let's be real - you're trying to get them near your hunting stands! Right!??! Once you really decide which route to take, there's a lot of great advice to be had from QDMA members and food plot junkies! Then the trial 'n' error game begins! LOL. Not all deer are fond of or attracted to all food sources. The "Field of Dreams" theory doesn't always work - plant it & they will come. Out of curiosity, is this something you think about while out in your boat supposedly fishing? -
... is available online now. Same booklet you'll get when purchasing licenses. http://www.eregulations.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/19NYHD-LR2.pdf

This is great example of a super unique redneck piece of engineering using <$5 worth of hardware. The idea mentioned in the video using a piece of 2"x2" with a strap and the hardware mtging attached to it is a novel idea also! Not sure I'd use either of these on public lands with all the horror stories I've heard about trail cam thefts!??! Not that Python locking cables are a great anti-theft deterrent, used in conjunction with above mounts, they do come in longer that the typical ~6' lengths. Just a DYK.

This is exactly how I get my annual PI rash on my wrists, putting on & taking off leather work gloves. So obviously, gloves can spread the PI oils around onto anything they touch. May sound like a simple fix for clearly a dumb-a$$ move, but when you have property that's infested with Multi-flora roses and poison ivy - you just have to minimize your exposure. Also, as above quote implies, you'd better remove cut vines from firewood before handling &/or burning! No sure if anyone has mentioned handling &/or washing the clothing you've wore while wading thru or working around PI. Have to be super careful just taking off this clothing, ie; not touching pant legs, shirt sleeves, socks, etc. Not always possible, but I remove clothing near washing machine & immediately put into washer. Once in the washing machine, I've had pretty good luck with Tide and a squirt of Dawn in warm/hot wash water. A 2nd rinse doesn't hurt. As a precaution, I always run washing machine a 2nd time with or w/o clothing and same detergent/ water temp combo. The trick with handling & minimizing the spread of the PI oils is you have to simply imagine you can see these invisible oils and where they're possibly spreading to. Sound bizarre, works for me!?!
-
... DYK you can still come in contact with the irritant oils thru the vines, not just the leaves.
-
Hope the produces show the footage of when a Grizz helps itself to the Moose meat. Know I'd be crapping my pants!
-
Once you know you've had contact with PI, there is a window of a couple hours (??) that it can be washed off before I starts to penetrate your skin's pores and the itching begins. During this initial clean-up use a HD detergent (Dawn) and COLD water, hot water opens the pores and drives the oils deeper. Not recommending this, but a clean cloth & gas will wash off the oils in cases where soap & water aren't readily available. After the rash & itching begins, use whatever works for you! For minor cases I've had good luck with the pink Calamine lotion. For a more severe case, I'm headed to the Dr for a steroid prescription. Depending on your relationship with your Family Dr, they might even simply call-in a prescription w/o an actual office visit... Unfortunately, the oil that causes the skin irritation is invisible. Be aware it can be on the handle of tools, trimmer parts, clippers, chainsaw bar/chain, clothing, boots (esp laces), gloves and assuming even on your pets if they've run thru it. FYI - If in doubt and you use someone else to sharpen saw chains, thoroughly rinse chains in gasoline before some one gets a 2nd hand irritation from handling chains &/or equipment. Take it from me, they are NOT happy with you if this happens!!!! Oh yeah, DO NOT BURN POSION IVY if you're in the proximity of the fire! Somehow the oils are carried within the smoke, Think a rash is annoying, should see someone that gets the oils from the smoke in their eyes!!!!

Ok ok, I'm sure this has been addressed but....
nyslowhand replied to buffalojay83's topic in Bow Hunting
^^^ So made in China is that much different than manufactured in China, but assembled in the USA. Several different threads on the other bow hunting forum discussing or questioning exactly where Rage BHs are manufactured &/or are simply assembled. IRC - To be legally labeled as "Made in USA" it simply needs to be assembled here with parts from unknown sources... I too have read bad reviews of specific BHs (mechanical and fixed) not penetrating, deploying prematurely, lack of blood trails, erratic flight, etc. Also have used some of these very same BHs and had good luck with them! Like I mentioned earlier, if what you're using has been successful, by all means keep using it! If you have one bad experience with a certain BH, aren't you going to question its' performance??!?? It can be a slippery slope (and $$) searching for the "latest n greatest" ultimate BH with potential success or terrible disappointments! -
Ok ok, I'm sure this has been addressed but....
nyslowhand replied to buffalojay83's topic in Bow Hunting
It only takes one meager or bloodless tracking when you question your choice of BHs. And that's w/o considering the previous 10+ deer you might have gotten with same BHs... Just one of those archery equipment or style of hunting debates that'll linger forever. Use or do whatever makes you confident when that moment of truth presents itself. All about personal preference!!!! -
Naked & afraid is a joke. Give a couple of people ~$20-50k for spending 14, 21 or 40 days in the most inhospitable environment imaginable with no food source, critters that want to eat you or injection poison in you and debilitating regional diseases. I do watch it some just to see how the screening process and pairings were made of two completely polar opposite personalities, btw intentionally. One contestant came across the film crews living quarters and stole some stuff. Sent home! See the episode where the female talked about a possible jungle love connection, but after a couple of days it reversed to "No way"! Not being a pervert, but do wonder about the naked, night-time cuddling to stay warm...hum!?! Prize $$ for the Alone winner is $500k, IRC. But aren't they out there for 6mos?? I'm in awe of the woman that shot the squirrel out of the pine tree with a recurve bow. What do you think Moog, up for the challenge? When one of the Alone contestants talked about killing a moose, I wondered if that was really legal!?! One thing about Alone is there is much less scripted drama than there is intentionally built into Naked & afraid. Belo - Sling TV is $25/mo with two package options. One is more sports (ESPN) oriented than the one I get. There are some on-demand options for every channel in your specific subscription. You'll need an antenna to get local network channels. like with most other streaming services. Limited add-ons if you want more movies, kids shows, comedy, etc for ~$5-10+ additional.

Weird food combos/ concoctions that you love
nyslowhand replied to rob-c's topic in General Chit Chat
Oh hell yeah, garden fresh tomatoes or cucumbers sliced with real (Hellman's) mayo between sliced bread. Didn't come to mind or even think of it as weird food, but most anything out of the refrig in a sandwich; spaghetti, Spanish rice, baked beans, any left-over meat, there's more just can't recall. One stipulation, bread has to be anything other than sliced white bread!! Any of you have the OCD disorder where all food on a plate needs to be kept separated and can't touch other foods? Sorry if you have this fetish, but it is hilarious to watch someone doing it! This came to mind when I was thinking about garbage plates. A cruel joke for you folks with food separation anxiety. Word for the day, look it up - brumotactillophobia. BTW wolc123, garbage plates are built basically with the same foods, with choice of meats & slight variations. What can make or break them is the meat/hot sauce put on top. Some places (my preference) use chicken wing sauce instead of or along with meat sauce. Not one of my favorite all-in-one foods, but do order a couple times a year when not worried about my arteries. -
Weird food combos/ concoctions that you love
nyslowhand replied to rob-c's topic in General Chit Chat
Packed my lunch for far too long to ever buy bologna or pickle load again! Horseradish occasionally mixed in with tuna or slathered on a roast beef sandwich is my wild n crazy food fetish! Sorry Grampy, but us old guys are boring, huh!?! -
^^^ Exactly!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone seen the German TV ad for their women's soccer players? Same issue, around the world!
