  1. Almost seems TOO good to be true. With politicians, it may be... Just have to wait n see!
  2. Ruger single-6 is a beautiful & nostalgic plinker. I've owned two. Yeah, regretted selling 1st one so much decades later bought my current one. Not the most comfortable handgun when holstered on the hip. Makes me wonder how the cowboys dealt with those big old holstered Colt Peacemakers..!?!
  3. .... or the young guy I allowed to hunt with me on the regular SZ deer season opening day. He seems nothing after a very long sit. Doesn't he hit a 6pt buck with his car within ~1/2 mile of where we were hunting on his way home!!?!!
  4. ^^^^ cage traps baited with sardine pieces. Very effective!
  5. This situation needs a lot of super, sensitive diplomacy to work out to your benefit!!!!! Offer up help, aide in turkey hunting &/or calling, be very clear permission will NOT be abused by your friends/family or NEVER into deer season, blah, blah, blah........ Gotta look at the opposite side of this coin, the landowner's situation! Been in the landowner's shoes and if a definitive line in the sand isn't drawn, things get blurry and abuse too easily ensues. People have a very different perspective of owning land in today's world than decades ago. In large part due to those that have asked permission or merely assumed it's okay and then abuse the privilege. Making every situation unique for both parties!!! Like ROB said, if only handshakes or someone's word had real meaning any more!
  6. No comment from Pygmy..? Does that assume guilt???
  7. ^^^ this goes back to the original question.
  8. Sure there's a "work-around" for these non-profit raffles. Don't know the specific logistics of the donated or purchased at wholesale price for the non-profit raffled long guns, but wouldn't an applicable gift card be feasible? Definitely does NOT address the root problem...!! Problem I see with contacting any upstate legislators, is that the greater NYC area legislators still hold the majority of votes. Regardless, I'm still airing my displeasure to my legislator. Still trying to wrap my head around the reasoning behind this legislation. Are they saying someone attending a non-profit event, whether for the NWTF, Whitetails Unlimited, Duck hunter's Assoc, QDMA, etc, might use the long gun that they paid for a raffle ticket to support an organization and won it could commit a crime???? Bewildering...Defies common sense!!!
  9. That way some else can do the background research in the libraries, churches and local govt archives. All for a few hundred bucks and then you can visit the sites they've revealed as your ancestors. Just be aware there are probably genealogist in local Italian/Sicilian towns that would help out for a fraction ($$) of what a so called professional genealogist would charge. If you've done any of this background work yourself, you're aware your current surname may not be the same as your ancestor's surname. Lot of Ellis Island Immigration &/or American-ization of foreign surnames. FYI background - Remember Italy was on Hitler's side during WWII. The Allies did invade and recapture Italy through Sicily first. This was in part due to the cooperation of Sicilian & American mafiusu informants. Also well know is the fact the Vatican helped fleeing Nazi leaders escape after the fall of Berlin and the end of the war Visiting WWII historical sites in Italy &/or Europe can be a heart-breaking or soul searching experience and not as glamorous or interesting as would be expected. It is what it is..... On a brighter note.. Tons of history in Italy and worth the effort to see the true "Italy" when going off the beaten tourist path.
  10. Great plan! Anyone going to Europe (esp Italy) and expecting to visit any of the true historical sites will be disappointed. IE; Colosseum, Leaning Tower, Famous fountains, Vatican, Roman Empire relics, etc. Sounds like you're not using a travel agent, so assuming you haven't been briefed on the dirty little secrets of "tourist hot spots". Pickpockets, photo taking scams, shady local tour guide services & cabbies, etc. Spent 3yrs in Germany during my military service, so I traveled a lot. Best way to see the real sights, how they live and get a real sense of Italy, France, etc is to get off the beaten path. BTW - If you've never done any genealogy yourself it'd be beneficial to pay a local search specialist in the city/area you mentioned before arriving. They know how & where to look and for the few hundred dollars it'll be a deal. Have fun! Enjoy! I'm jealous!
  11. Trade you 1/2 my stockpiled Zingers for some Twinkies...? Never thought what I assumed was a simple thread would go in so many different unrelated directions!!!!!!!!!!!
  12. This post was NOT meant to instigate yet another Xbow debate!!!! Simply a FYI update on whatz going on this year, for those that care.
  13. IRC, there's been other similar threads about this very issue, but with current trends I'm a little surprised & shocked about certain technology advancements. Gotta have our iPhones, but Face Time has a bug that can allows others to eavesdrop on our conversations unknowing to us. Was even mention about hackers actually initiating iPhone cams and viewing us w/o an actual Face Time call connection. Pretty sure Android phones aren't exempt from these sort of hacks! I also love the fact a cell phone signal can be used to track the user in an emergency situation. BUT.. knowing where I am ALL the time is just too creepy for this old fart. Thank you Google... Just recently read where numerous auto makers that have key-less entry on their cars can be overridden with Radio Shack signal boosters. Won't be leaving my key-less vehicle running while I run into the store thinking no one can gain entry with my doors locked & w/o the key fob nearby!!! This last example of TOO much technology is one of my pet peeves. I understand the need for emergency braking, lane deviation alerts and crash/proximity signaling &/or manual overrides. What I'll never understand is the presumed need for driver-less vehicles! Who thought this was a good idea!!??!! No way am I getting into the backseat of an Uber/Lyft vehicle with no driver behind the wheel!!!
  14. FYI - Below is a direct cut & paste from an eMail I received from the NYCC yesterday. Simply to conserve space I did delete references to their membership drive and details regarding how to contact your legislator(s). 2019 Crossbow Update The 2019 legislative session began January 9th. On January 15th the Governor released his budget proposal and unfortunately it did not include any sportsmen related proposals such as crossbow language this year. 2019 is the beginning of a new two year legislative cycle and as everyone knows, a change in control of the Senate. All previous bills from the past two-year cycle have expired and we need to have new crossbow bills introduced.` The Senate and Assembly have released the committee assignments and we are working to have Full Inclusion Crossbow Bills introduced in both the Senate and Assembly. Everyone is anxious to get the ball rolling, but the introduction of Bills may take a few weeks to secure. Now is the time for everyone to begin calling YOUR own State Legislators. They need to hear the positions on crossbows directly from their constituents. There are many new legislators in Albany. I will guarantee they will be hearing for those that oppose crossbow expansion of any kind very soon. Don't let them be the only voice they hear! Please make the phone calls today! Ask your legislators to support classifying crossbows as archery equipment and to support Crossbow Full Inclusion. When we started accepting 2019 memberships at the end of July, we had 1100 members for 2018. That was a 20% increase over 2017. Since the beginning of August 2018 we have added over 400 new members. This is very positive growth, however we need to keep that number growing. If not already done, please make sure you renew and talk to your friends about joining. As our membership grows, so does our voice in Albany.
  15. These are worthy of a new thread - Add a caption!
  16. Know around my neck of the woods (rural area) the going rate for a FC of wood is ~$75 and most of the time that's for p/u & not delivered. Do know several people who heat mainly via firewood purchase loads of logs dumped in their driveway or yard. Cheaper means of buying firewood, but not for everyone as you still need a decent chainsaw, access to a wood splitter and dealing with the clean-up aftermath. Know a few years ago I'd come across a BTU comparison of heating with different fuels; ie: gas, oil, elec, coal, wood, pellets. Gotta be one out there with current fuel prices included.
  17. Hoping this is correct, but last I heard the NYBHs had a membership advantage over NYCC by about 2:1. In a #s perspective, about 2K to 1K members for each pro & con organization. JMO, that doesn't appear to be an overwhelming voice against Xbow's full implementation into the bow season. The opposition is definitely the more vocal &/or effective lobbying factor making them the proverbial "squeaky wheel". In the past 5yrs around this time frame is when the Xbow bills are introduced (reintroduced?) to the legislatures. Going to be interesting to see what the 2019 strategy will be!?! So far almost the same bill has been introduced 5X with the same dismal results. With the exception of one year when it made it thru most all the hurdles, but never got scheduled for a formal vote. Trying not to be overly critical, but the definition of insanity comes to mind. BTW - Yes Xbow bills have been tacked onto the NYS budget, but always get stripped off when it's time to approve the budget. These stripped-off bills are them sent to both the assembly & senate's dreaded sub-committees for further consideration, the Enviro sub-committee. This is when things get muddy/unclear...! Don't know how these sub-committees work or how often they convene, but it baffles me how some of the sub-committee members that have either sponsored, co-sponsored or claim to be in favor of the Xbow legislation can't get these bills out of the sub-committee???? Wait 'n' see, again!
  18. I'm a history buff, esp within NYS, so this "stuff" is fascinating!! Kudos to you for playing in the dirt to reveal the findings!
  19. Fact check - That portion of illegal drugs comes through the established (vehicle & pedestrian) check points. Not hauled across the Rio Grande, under fences &/or through the SW dessert by illegals carrying them while using coyote guides.
  20. Now there's a name not many will know, NOMA. IRC, my dad purchased his from a Central Tractor maybe in ~1985/90. I inherited it and used it until last year when it started spewing oil while under load. Immediately parked it, but did put it out by the road for sale this past summer. No one knew what it was, so back behind my shed it went. Fortunately about the same time, a neighbor gifted me a used Big Box snowblower. What a POS that turned out to be for only being 2-3yo!!!! Agree with others about using an ATV snowplow s/u. If you don't push snow way off driveway in the beginning, you'll eventually run out of room over a WNY winter. They will not push previously plowed or compacted snow!!! Isn't the key to using a plow on an ATV, the HD frame support? Assuming the cheapo ones will not be friendly to your ATV!??!
  21. Call a heating contractor and appear/act as though you are interested in upgrading your furnace. They will typically do an "air Xfer" (name?) test, which involves a large fan sucking air out of the house and then being able to evaluate leakages. They'll want to look at existing furnace and try to sell you a new HE unit, don't bite or sign. Like others have mentioned, suspects for heat leaks or cold air coming in are windows, doors, under-insulated walls or attic, heat runs in un/under insulated walls, etc. Then there's the heat delivery with possible leaking vent runs, nat'l gas of course. Hot water boiler systems with radiators have their own issues. Here's something I always thought was bizarre about how the human brain works. In early AMs during summer time when temp is ~60deg, aren't you running around with shorts & a T-shirt. Now change the season to winter when you look out the window at the snow blowing, it's ~60deg in the house and your wearing 2/3 layers of clothing to keep warm. Whatz the difference??? FYI - A change of just 3 deg of thermostat settings up/down effects the monthly heating bill by ~10%. May be worth the additional ~$30/40 per month to keep everyone happy...!?! When I was working I had thermostat cycle 4X/day from 63deg to 69 deg depending on time of day, if I was home &/or my activity in the house. When I retired I left temp at 69deg 24/7 and did not see much difference in gas/elec bill.
  22. Somewhere in the development process of this Xbow from Ten Point there was some marketing genius (??) that encouraged the development and at the current price range. Shame on this company that was founded and operated by Xbow hunters! Assuming in a couple of years this $2500 Xbow will be discontinued!??! Unless the "money is no issue" hunters prove me wrong. Always been the lure of having the latest 'n' greatest at any $$, no matter what the product.
  23. Isn't this a "Guy" thing? Regardless of item - Open box, set instructions aside and proceed with any assembly or operating the item as if we know what to do!!?!! The instructions or user manuals should be saved, just in case we don't know what we think we know..... I'm guilty!
  24. I have the Game Saver version and love it. Works great. but.. you do have to ensure end of bag is nested into vacuum pocket & flattened across the sealing wire strip. When filling bags, you do have to keep the area you want sealed clean so it seals properly. Haven't tried any other brand of bags, the FS continuous rolls work great. Just not as convenient as the pre-cut ones. Have found a couple of small quirks I'm not overly satisfied with when using my FS. I always cut bags to size & double seal, so the sealer can overheat after a while causing me to wait for it to cool down before proceeding. There is a "Liquids" sealing button, but when I see liquids starting to be drawn into the top of the bag, I immediately switch to the sealing function. Not sure bags with liquids have all the air drawn out before I prematurely seal them... But they do appear to freeze well! Annoying quirks, but merely slight work-arounds! In the past have come across ground (links) meat that have been in chest freezer almost 3yrs and have NO freezer burn.
  25. How'd I miss this?? Happy birthday and get well soon, bud!!
