......And the week prior to each race day!! The town has a population of ~28K, not including the 158K race fans.

Careful, you're going to get this transfered to the dreaded Political topics. lol

I'm impressed with your enthuasium, but you have to clarify for me. We taking about ankle deep in the shoreline, creek or stream - or - scuba gear/wet suit...?

Think everyone has realized this by now, it's a scam. Gas goes up 50¢/gal and we scream & yoller. Then it goes back down 20¢/gal and we're happy again. Must be getting near the end of a financial quarter and they need to boost profits. BTW - If I recall correctly (?) gasoline in NY is taxed at ~70¢/gal. Which puts us in 1st place, yeah....NOT!!!

To set the stage, I'm not pro nor anti Xbow! Simply interested in how the Xbow legislation is progressing. Recieved this eMail 3/3/13 from NYCC, of which I'm not a member. Contents of eMail: Crossbow Bill Update We have received numerous emails inquiring about the status of Crossbow Legislation in Albany. Assemblyman Sean Ryan and Senator Pat Gallivan reintroduced their 2012 bills in early January and we reported them as A283 and S1699. Unfortunately, both of these bills have technical problems and will either need amending or must be started over as a new bill. The problem stems from the expired temporary inclusion for crossbows during firearms and late muzzleloader seasons that sunsetted on December 31, 2012. Once this provision expired the language was stricken from the law as if it never existed. The resubmitted bills include this language, which no longer exists in the environmental conservation law. There continues to be considerable discussion surrounding the crossbow issue and we will likely see the present bills amended or new bills introduced. Economic impact data is also being compiled to support the use of crossbows, including their ability to increase tourism and provide revenue to the State. As this legislative session progresses, and the present bills are either amended or replaced, we will continue to keep you informed. Most likely this will not happen until after the budget is passed which is required to be put in place by April 1st. The budget always takes center stage until its passage, but then again, in Albany anything can happen. Stay tuned.

And then there's the 7th century Anglo-Saxon horde found in England by a hobbyist metal detector in a farm field near a highway popularized by a recent TV documentary. Compared to that stroke of luck, around here you'd be lucky to find uniform buttons, belt buckles or an old muzzleloader. Gotta assume no one does it for profit..?

The limited availability of huntable habitat and its' access to the general public is already coming into play. If you take this current situation and play it forward you can foresee it exponentially getting worse with each passing generation. Logging & development of prime habitat, the large farms being parceled off and the neighborhood mentality of allowing unlimited access will eventually disappear and will contribute to the European hunting style of strictly limited, purchased hunts in our future. Those older civilizations stripped their forests and then were forced to venture westward across the Atlantic in search of new resources. North America has already done the same type of habitat devastation in the original colonial areas (and others). Just a matter of time before we destroy what's left. Unfortunately we're too greedy &/or near-sighted to see what we're doing to our future generations and any hunting opportunities we might will them. Also with the reduced habitat, think everyone can imagine what's in store for the wildlife. Okay - Venting is complete, time to take my soapbox & go home!

Strange, would have thought by mid-Feb the bucks would have already shed their racks...? Is the date/time stamp correct? Assuming the photos are in NYS..?

Like you, I got through the beginning (~30min) only and realized the title said it all!! Idiocracy!! Has to be one of the top 5 stupidest movies of all time, even for a "B" movie. IMHO - Wouldn't form any opinions from it or think it was a commentary on mankind's future.

Mostly rock from the mid-60s British invasion thru the 80-90s southern rock era. Mainly a guitar enthuasist. Nothing too hard or heavy metal. Almost forgot, NO disco era crap either!!!

Have a 30 year old Quaker Boy box call I still use every spring. Great for long distance calling, some might call it locating. Probably a lot of fancier, hand-crafted box calls that I'll bet aren't that much more effective for the money. Have had 100+ diaphram calls over the years. Lot of different brands and styles now a days! I prefer a dbl diaphram, single cut call of no specific make. Technique to make almost any diaphram work good is to get it cut/shaped & bent to perfectly fit the roof of your mouth. Have used both box & mouth calls occassionaly to mimic 2 hens. Like any aspect of hunting turkeys, some times it works & other times it doesn't. Shouldn't be a secret, but - once I get them located (gobbling) with the box call, it then gets set aside and I finish with the diaphram. Basically, want both hands on the shotgun and no further movement once I hear or see they are closing in. Tried a couple different slate calls, but could never get good at them! Which have I had the most sucess with - depends on if you mean locating a goobler or closing the deal. IMHO - Need both to get the job done!

Just think about what might happen with an ATV towing a brushhog over the "very wet" terrain. Ruts from ATV, brushhog's wheels tracking ATV's or sinking in themselves, mower scalping the ground due to insufficient clearance and more than likely the mower stalling out with water/mud/etc. Sounds like more of a late spring project. You need input from someone more familiar with clover plantings. Sounds like you're going to try and overseed onto the brushhogged, existing ground. Not too sure you'll get anything to show for your time, effort or $$. I tried that on a mowed ATV path & it didn't work out for me.

Thinking of getting into food plotting?
nyslowhand replied to G-Man's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
"....Some may just want to pay to have someone come and do the work but is it cost effective?...." If you remove the upfront, intial cost of equipment & its' maintenance or repairs out of the equation, this may be actually cheaper. That is if you clear the land yourself, then contract to plow or cultivate the soil. You may get away with only a rototiller for subsequent plantings. Guess it's all based on how much disposable income you'll part with and what the improvement is worth to you. If your a person that enjoys the escape from the Mon-Fri grind by playing with dozers, tractors, etc on weekends - more power to you! -
If you're looking for a definitive "This is the one" piece of equipment, then the answer is - it depends... What works for other's situations, may not be ideal for yours. First of all it depends on what your resources are ($$), an investment or short term. Your property or a lease? A single plot or possible future plots? Size of the plots? Then you need to have some realistic expectations. Do you want your food plot to be picturesque with no stumps? I have a tractor, a HD walk-behind brushhog, a very HD trimmer with a 10" saw blade and a 14.5hp tow behind brushhog. All have different purposes and applications. What are you trying to clear? Small saplings on a flat, stone-free overgrown field? Personally, found it a little un-nerving forging the ATV with brushhog in tow into a thicket. Never know exactaly what you'll encounter or any possible damage to ATV (undercarriage). Believe me, I've tore up my tow-behind this way on protruding rocks. Bought a used tractor, but found it difficult to get into areas I wanted to clear on my property. Older, used tractors come with the expectation of maintenance & repairs. My suggestion and what I've found to work best for my situation is to wrestle with the walk-behind brushhog after sawing off larger (1.5"+) sapling flush to the ground with a chainsaw. Yeah, the DR brand is the top of the line, but you can get something decent for ~1/2 the $$. Or just beat-up some else's rental. You never mentioned what you'll be using to prepare the food plot once it has been cleared. This could influence your choice of brush clearing equipment!

Think this is everyone's reoccurring daydream!! Have thought about this most of my life and yet here I am retired & still in NYS. Must be some kind of idiot or glutton for punishment. LOL Did some serious research into where to move ~12-15 years ago using weather & hunting as my primary criteria. Really liked central to western Kentucky, Tennessee or Virginia. Out of the costal hurricane or tornado paths, summers didn't seem to be unbearable and very mild winters. Only problem was - not a lot of employment opportunities in Appalachia. Did have an opportunity with a large employer to relocate to the southern California area decades ago. Salary was 30% less, while the cost of living was 30% more. Just couldn't justify that, along with the horror stories of the freeway commuting out there. Now you throw any state's gun control laws into the mix & that creates a whole new set of criteria. Is there really a utopia? Doesn't every piece of paradise have it's dark side too? So, in the end pick your daydream - winning the lottery, moving out of state, 200" bucks, .....

Three Superbowl Commercials I Was Proud to See
nyslowhand replied to CharlieNY's topic in General Chit Chat
The Mayor's anti-gun add only ran during 1/2 time in the Washington DC area. Aimed at legislatures watching the game. From what I heard, Bloomberg footed the bill for the ad. NYC taxpayer's money....? -
Now we're talkin'...! Am I the only one that caught this reference? Most recent black lab/beagle mix that just passed away was Abby. Okay, a Beatles reference. Had a great beagle in the late 1960s I called Smokey.

Ditto. Thought it was kind of weird how the DEC handled Xbow education. A printed form, simply read, sign & carry. Should be mandatory to take bow class w/incorporated section covering Xbows (for all).
-
Bingo! The actual root ot the anti-Xbow arguement. Infringing on their time in the woods and opportunities on their deer. Don't recall this much controversy when in-line ML were allowed in the SZ regular season or compound bows included during bow season or now the introduction of rifles in certain areas of the SZ during regular season. Just something about the mentality of diehard bow hunters I don't understand...? BTW -Love my bow hunting & have for 40+ years, but I don't feel I have any exclusive rights to any season or specific deer. How in the world do you think this is different than a Xbow??????

Used to be a big football fan, but years of rooting for the Bills ruined that!! Not a big believer in "Divine Intervention", but this year's Super Bowl has that sense. Opposing coaches that are actually brothers. And a retiring superstar's (Ray Lewis) team that has been inspired by him.....? Also, a little humility injected to what some often view as a God-like QB (Brady). Can't wait for the commercials!!

Deport Piers Morgan ?
nyslowhand replied to 132 eight pointer's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Piers Morgan is a buffoon and nothing more than a stupid, little puppet that has been put on a "soapbox" to spread the opinions of an extremely biased news (?) agency, CNN (Time-Warner). They don't report the news anymore, at best it's become a 50/50 mix of fact & opinion. Several other puppets on CNN just like him!!
