  1. Outdoor channel had a show on just this topic, comparing the 9mm to a smaller caliber pistol. Test shots were taken into those 12" gel blocks that simulate the density & thickness of the human chest cavity. The 9mm blasted straight through the blocks with minimal damage only along the path of the projectile. Tested .40 cal S&W bullets went 6" and basically exploded radially at the center of the simulated body cavity. Take it for what it's worth; the host stated most law enforcement agencies are downgrading from the 9mm.
  2. ....... and wait 'til you get your school taxes in September.
  3. These broadheads are sitting here collecting dust. Someone must have a use for them. Great for the newly legalized crossbows also. Make me an offer.
  4. Got drafted in 1966, enlisted in USAF to learn a skill. Normal recruiter BS promises, got to basic and only available jobs were in Munitions (bomb dump). Lucked out! Amid all the orders to Viet Nam, went to Germany for 3 years. Served from '66 to '70, got out! Lost 3 very close high school buddies who fought in Viet Nam!! Heart goes out to their memory! Deepest respect to all that serve(d) and especially those that made the ultimate sacrifice!!!!!!
  5. Checked out the video on the Anchor Sight. Looks like you need to focus on two seperate objects when using this. Anchor sight sets your anchor point & form, while the sight pins are still aligned on the target. Think I'll try the Hindsight where you only align the X'hairs with your sight pins.
  6. If you truly think you would like bowhunting, here's what I did. Keep in mind that bowhunting is more expensive to get started in than gun hunting. Start out with a decent, used bow!!! Shoot it for a year or two, then use the $$ you've saved to get a new bow or a better used one. Even if you upgrade the sight or splurge for a few "add-ons", you still end-up with $$ in your pocket starting out "used". Visit a few archery shops. Act like you're interested in a new bow, have tons of $$$ and would like to shoot some. They'll be more than happy to measure your draw length and set you up to try one out. Try out different releases if they have them. To start out, ask for a bow with a larger brace height. Google the trade-offs of speed vs accuracy for a beginner. If you liked the experience of shooting a bow, multiply that by 1000 to match the thrill of seeing that 1st deer at 25 yds and you're at full draw. Now you'll know what to look for in a used bow. Get a decent, name brand bow to begin with. Do your research, read reviews, archery forums, etc. Bewarned - Every hunter is different and has their own preferences & opinions. And then there is the selecting of arrows, broadheads, scent killers, attractants, camo clothing, stands, .......................... It'll be as expensive an experience as you allow it to be. There's no way to explain the thrill or adreneline rush of that 1st decent buck at 20 yds or less. Your heart will be jumping out of your chest!!! After that, you're hooked for life!! Start small, shoot big.
  7. ..... and the early bow season's weather is typically more tolerable than it is during gun season.
  8. Every year it is getting harder to bow hunt with my trifocal corrected vision. Almost impossible to focus on the peep, sights and target at different distances. Saw this Hindsight add-on and it looked interesting. Thought I might try one. http://www.hindsightco.com/hindsightproducts.html Any one have one? Any input? Also see there are magnified peeps and 2x lenses for the sight frames. So apparently I'm not the only bowhunter struggling with poor, corrected vision.
  9. Growalot Assuming...350º for 1 to 1 1/2 hours????? Never mentioned temp or cooking time.
  10. WOW! A deer of a lifetime and a 12 year old boy! Now he'll spend the rest of his life trying to get another one as good or better. BOL! Other hunters thinking the deer was theirs to pursue, just crazy. They should have congratulated the boy and moved on with their pursuit of other bucks. No one owns or has exclusive rights to any deer, unless they bought it and have it fenced in!!!
  11. All giants!! I like the survey question, below the author's signature; "Does a buck's rack size or weight matter more to you as a measure of success?"
  12. Sell the hunt and use the funds for equipmment, etc. Trade it for payment towards a New Mexico elk or Yukon Moose hunt. Suppose if you are going to dream of winning, might as well dream BIG!!!
  13. Don't piece out that set-up!!! If you put that scope on a ML, you'll regret it! Try one of the gun auction sites. You'd be suprised how easy it is to buy, sell or ship a rifle to a FFL by using them. Here's 3 I've visited in the past, sure there are many more: http://www.auctionarms.com/ http://www.gunbroker.com/ http://www.gunsamerica.com/
  14. Don't have to be a hunter to realize this annual occurrence. Typically "road kills" diminish dramatically after the opening weekend of gun season in WNY. IMHO. Doesn't take a deer long to realize that in order to survive it must change its' daily movement patterns. Especially true if they have been pressured with drives or shot at. Also over the past few days, WNY is getting into the winter weather, so the deer change for that too. Even with all that being said, the thing that has me baffled is the lack of buck sightings during gun season. Usually see them cruising even after the initial round of breeding and haven't seen that at all this year...?
  15. Cam MIB, they'll know. lol
  16. Okay, I see a lot of tracks in the mud, so I do know they are there. I'm in agreement with everyone else, not seeing them during the daylight hours.
  17. A number rating...maybe a 7. Had some great days. Had many slow days. First year I could hunt when ever I wanted to. Early season I passed on a couple of does, in hindsight...should a .... Saw 5-6 different bucks at ~50 yards. Had a bruiser charge my can calls on Halloween weekend. Too busy watching his partner before I realized he was coming. Saw hin again a couple of weeks later at 50 yards. He lives and I'm eating my tags, unless late ML is more productive. Very limited sucess with grunt & bleat calls. No responses to my scents/attractants. Weather was extremely unseasonable with the warm trend and the damned winds. Very few doe sightings, which has me puzzled. Typically see a lot! Early apples kind of threw my normal hunting pattern way out of wack. All in all - Got to hunt a lot, saw several bucks and had an exciting encounter!!!!
  18. Agree with with you 200%. Have a very similiar situation on my property. They will eventually come out. If you attempt to open up the thicket, the deer will move out. Did it myself & regret doing so!!
  19. That's great that PA has re-introduced the Elk. Unfortunately it'll be a long time before the herd is sustainable enough to hunt. Believe now there are only 50 lottery permits drawn for residents. If you are luck enough to win, you can't reapply for 5 years. Some day, maybe Pa residents will get an open season with a larger harvest quota.
  20. I'm on the other side of Rte104. You get the ag crops & bigger bucks. I'm dealing with brush bucks mainly with only orchards around.
  21. Correct, but when in estrous the does may bred several times with the same or different bucks. Thus twins by the same buck or different bucks.
  22. Property is in the Town of Sodus. Have several small-ish to normal sized bucks on property. Seen a couple at a distance, blew an opportunity on a larger one. Other than that don't think they are into the full blown chasing yet. Hopefully this week when we get warmer (seasonable) temps.
  23. From an Energy Saving booklet put out by the US dept. of Energy: "Programmable Thermostats You can save as much as 10% a year on your heating and cooling bills by simply turning your thermostat back 10% to 15% for 8 hours." So in theory, if you turn your thermostat back 2X (Leave & Sleep) you could save 10% to 15% on heating costs. I did this for my heating and saw about a 10% savings. Eight hours set @ 69º & 16 hours @ 64º for weekdays and the opposite for weekends. I don't have central air, but would assume same logic would apply with modified comfort times. Oh yeah, in their infinite wisdom the US Dept. of Energy recommends an Energy Star Compliant programmable thermostat. HUH?
  24. Been there, done that!! Wait a minute, think I was there.....
