  1. I have never had experience with either brand of rifle, but have heard good reviews of both... As far as chambering, I agree with padre....25-06 is excellent for deer but light for elk....308 would be a good choice for deer and a better choice for elk than the 25-06...
  2. Loved watching and listening to him....." Roll Over Beethoven" while hop dancing across the stage playing his guitar behind his back.... Truly a rock-N-roll icon....
  3. A good friend of mine, one of the deadliest gobbler slayers I know, uses this technique often, and not just on field birds. Often he gets between hens and the gobbler on the roost and then tries to flush them in opposite directions..He's filled a lot of tags that way over the years.
  4. I love the Lyman tang sight on the .22, although it's probably aftermarket..Looks like some has had it on and off a few times.. The sight itself may have some collector value.
  5. What's the proper pronunciation of that creek's name ? Is it OAT-ka or is it o-AT-ka ?
  6. The Mermaid has a zero turn Kubota mower that she "allows" me to mow about 5 acres around her pond and trailer on her Tuscarora property. She bought it used several years ago and it has been a good machine.. Other than replacing a couple of tires we have had no problems with it...
  7. They did Cold Brook ( Keuka) and Catherine ( Seneca)....Don't know if they have done Naples yet or not... The general opinion was that the run was well underway and many fish would be spawned and back in the lake prior to the April 1st opener..Probably won't be a banner year on the Fingerlakes rainbow tribs..
  8. I fished the headwaters of the Cohocton twice back during the warm spell.....Caught 5 trout each time, a total of 6 browns and 4 brookies... Nice to be back on the stream... With this snow, it will be a few days before I go again..
  9. DANG ! Has she been spreading those pictures around the internet AGAIN ?? No wonder that hatchery truck slowed down in front of the house yesterday...
  10. I'm out of "likes", my friends...Thank you all for your good tidings !!
  11. Okay Pilgrim.....I don't bowhunt...So tell me how I am the problem...
  12. THANKS, Larry !! Thirty five minutes, eh ? What will I do for the OTHER half hour ?
  13. Just pickin'....You KNOW I love you, Big Fella....<,SMOOCH>>....
  14. "Redundant".....My, that's a big word for a big musclebound chooch ! >>>><<smile>>.....
  15. Elmer Keith, regarding hunting elk in the dark timber..." Sometimes the only shot you'll get is at the south end of a northbound bull."....
  16. I'm just a hunter....I don't whine...It just appeared to me that you were trying to get a rise out of somebody rather than to simply make a joke.. If I am wrong, I sincerely apologize..
  17. Nice....I assume trolling is your preferred method of fishing ?
  18. I apologize to the OP for getting somewhat off topic... I have enjoyed my discussion with Padre, although our opinions and priorities may vary somewhat...It's nice to have a good discussion with a gentleman concerning our common interests..
  19. I agree, Padre.....I did not mean to suggest that the 7MM08 or the .270 or the .280 or other cartridges in that general range are OPTIMUM for large game at long range, however they are perfectly adequate with good bullets at normal ranges... The belted magnums have a purpose, which is to kill big critters at long range with heavy for caliber bullets. To say you need a .300 mag or a .338 to cleanly kill an elk or moose at normal ranges is ludicrous. The .270 Win is a very popular elk rifle among the locals out west, and in the real world, the .270 hasn't got much over the 7MM08 with equal bullet weights.
  20. I own several rifles and enjoy shooting all of them...Last season I killed 3 deer with 3 different chamberings, a 7MM08, a .280 Rem and a 30-06. However, my 7MM08 Mountain rifle has been the one I have carried the most. I have killed more deer with it in the last 30 years than I have with all my other rifles combined...For deer hunting within 300 yards, you can find many chamberings that work AS WELL as the 7MM08, but you won't find one that works BETTER. As an all around rifle, I would not hesitate to use my 7MM08 with Barnes X bullets or premium bonded bullets( like the Nosler partition) for elk and moose. The ballistics of the 7MM08 are very similar to the venerable 7X57, which has been killing critters of all sizes all over the world for over 100 years.
  21. You're in the wrong part of the state....I have three gun clubs within a 10 minute drive... Or you could go to most any state land ( lots of that around) and just set up a target and shoot, or stop and ask a farmer if you could do it in his back 40.. Of course, I live about 5 hours northwest of NYC...<<grin>>....Good luck...Hope you find a place..
  22. We got about a foot and a half...Back in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, that was a common occurrence here, but if recent years it's a major snowstorm...I just finished snowblowing/digging out....
  23. Hehehehehe..." Don't bend over in the garden, Momma, them 'taters got EYES ! "
  24. That's a lot of spuds !! You'll have to bring in a truckload of 'tater pickin' Mexicans to harvest 'em !
  25. Yeah, wait till you're MY age.....I'm not only awkward, but I'm clumsy and uncoordinated to boot !! Not to mention forgetful and flatulent.......
