One of my old girlfriends had a thong made from a black bear pelt... At least that's what it LOOKED like...
-
Now THERE is a RIFLE.... I shouldn't have looked... WET CLEANUP IN AISLE THREE !

LOL Bugsy ! I DO have a laminate stock on my M70, but at least it is still WOOD...Nearly everything else I own is walnut and blued. Stainless steel rifles and scopes remind me of General Patton's comment about pearl grips on a revolver..." Only a pimp in a New Orleans whorehouse would carry a pearl handled revolver ! "

Yeah, Stoney, I think you are right. Last year I saw a bear on the property with 3 cubs. I'm getting bears on the trailcams nearly every check now.

I drove up to the property this morning to do some mowing on my food plots. About half a mile before I got there , a sow bear and four cubs crossed the road in front of me. When I drove the tractor and mower up to the food plot, there was a flock of turkeys in the field, probably about a dozen. They ran and flew out before I could get a full count, but there were 3 or 4 adults and about 7 or 8 pheasant sized poults. It was obvious what they were there for..The field was FULL of grasshoppers and other insects.

Holy crap !! I have jockey shorts older than you ! Some of them have probably been washed at least 8 or 10 times ! Happy Birthday, my friend ... <<smile>>...

"Too much WOOD in bugsnbows choices" Are you trying to get a RISE out of me, Larry ?....<<grin>>....

For whitetails, primary is a Rem M700 Mountain Rifle in 7mm08 with a Burris 2x7.. Secondary, or for use when a longer shot is anticipated, Win M70 in .280 Rem with a Leupold fixed power 6 X. Several times during season when I feel in the mood and don't plan to do a lot of walking, Garand M1 with issue sights.

Bubba and Cooter are out fishing. Bubba says " I think I'm gonna have to get a divorce. My wife hasn't spoke to me in two months. " Cooter replies " You better hang onto her.. A woman like that is hard to find . "

I have taken a few deer with Sierras, and I have no complaints.. However, for quite a few years I used Nosler ballistic tips, mostly in a .280 Rem and a 7mm08 and they were very accurate and killed game well up to and including game the size of caribou. A few years back, just for s**ts and giggles, I tried Barnes X type bullets. I now use them for nearly all of my hunting loads, 120 grain in 7mm08, 140 grain in the .280, and 250 grain in my 9.3 x 62. They continue to impress me both in accuracy and performance on game. They shoot well in my rifles, nearly always exit, kill as well as any bullet I have ever used, and tend to mess up less eating meat than many of the conventional jacketed bullets that I have used.

I have about 75 pounds of buckwheat to plant, but I am not sowing it until I have at least a 50/50 chance of some rain... I am going to work the ground up in the next few days and then wait for a favorable forcast until I put the seed in the ground.

Bino recommendations under $1500 or so
Pygmy replied to Marion's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
A pair of HUNTING binos will not replace a spotting scope at the range except at relatively short range. Maximum practical magnification on even high quality binos for hunting is about 10X and 8X is a better choice for most of us. Any higher than that is just too hard to hold steady under hunting conditions. -

Tough to beat Swaro.. Back when I was shopping for a pair of high end binos conventional wisdom said that Swaro,-Zeiss-Leica were about a wash as far as quality was concerned..Basically a matter of personal choice between the 3.. I went with Leicas mostly due to the ironclad life warranty, but since then I have looked through some friend's Swaros and kinda wished I had gone with them. That said, my Leicas are a wonderful glass and I never have had reason to regret that I bought them. -
I'm seeing lots of them...Mostly twins, a few singles and one set of triplets so far. A friend of mine told me yesterday he had a doe with quadruplets in his yard.

One Tequila, Two Tequila, Three Tequila, Ford!

Your thread title sounds like a bunch of wetbacks getting ready to cross the Rio Grande... -
A 5, 6 OR 7 Weight rod will do fine for river smallmouths.. I see no reason to go heavier.. Use your trout rod... Hellgrammite and crayfish patterns do well on a dead drift... Most any substantial streamer pattern or a muddler will work cast across and down. Popping bugs or hair bug patterns work well on the surface.

I have hunted Pa since the mid 1970s, Freytown... I'm done....First they implemented the ARs, which made it much more unlikely for a meat hunter like myself to shoot a legal buck... Then last year they required that I had to wait until after the first 5 days of season to fill my EXPENSIVE doe permits which dramatically reduces my chances of doing so. It just isn't worth the money for me anymore to hunt for 3 or 4 days with a minimal chance of bringing some meat home. That's just me..I know that a lot of the trophy hunters LOVE the ARs...So do the taxidermists...

Sorry....I'll eat most anything, but I draw the line at canines. I know, the native Americans used to eat dog on a regular basis, and a friend of mine who ran an outfitting service said he once had a Chinese client who shot and ate a coyote, BUT........

Hey, it HAPPENED to me once.... I'm lucky those things don't have TEETH !

Good job, Growie ! Little ears = BIG bear....

For game up to the size of caribou, the .270 is never a bad choice.. With proper bullets it will do a good job on moose and elk too.. Enjoy your rifle ..<<smile>>...
-
Good luck to both of you...Newfoundland is beautiful and the Newfies are a HOOT !! Lots of moose, too. Moose are not especially hard to kill, but they are HUGE critters, and sometimes it takes them a while to realize that they are dead. You are lucky to be able to go with your Dad. By the time I could afford an out of state hunt, my Dad was too old and his health too bad to accompany me.
-
They will work just fine... Where is your Dad hunting ? I'd love to hunt moose again, but it probably will not happen..

500 yards is a poke with anything but a specialized long range rig.. I find 400 a much more realistic "maximum range" at least with the standard chamberings. The problem is, you can't always convince the elk to pose broadside for perfect shot placement, regardless of the range. You need a bullet that will penetrate far enough to reach the vitals even with a less than perfect shot angle. I'd say that within 400 yards, a 30-06 with a monolithic 165 or 180 grain bullet would be a reasonable choice. I would a whole lot rather be able to get closer though, say within 300 yards.
