I agree that the neck roast is one of the tastiest cuts of venison. The flavor and texture of the neck roast is excellent. All that I have eaten have been cooked fresh or after being frozen a fairly short period of time, so that the fat has not had time to become rancid.
-
Deer fat, like pork, does not freeze as well as the meat, and it will turn rancid and give the meat a stronger taste, even while in the freezer I will continue to trim ALL the fat, silverskin and connective tissue from my venison. It's a PITA, but makes for better tasting meat, IMHO.

I cut my wingshooting teeth hunting grouse. The first year I hunted I killed 14, and that was with a single shot 16 gauge. On opening day, 1965, I killed my first limit of 4 in one day. Back in the late 70's and early 80, I hunted one season with two buddies and we got our collective limit of 12 birds several times. I flushed perhaps one or two while turkey hunting this fall, and none while deer hunting. I don't specifically hunt them anymore, but I do hunt rabbits quite a bit, and it's been years since I killed a grouse while rabbit hunting.

Sounds like a nice place for a clover plot. Clover tolerates moderate shade quite well.

If you just want something different, consider a 9.3 x 62. Kinda like a .35 Whelen on steroids. It also is a very efficient cartridge, and cases and other components are readily available. It does give you the option of heavier ( up to 320 grain) bullets and will match or slightly exceed the Whelen( in either configuration) in ballistics for 200 to 250 grain bullets. When you tell the guys at the range what caliber your rifle is, they'll look at you REALLY funny...<<grin>>...

Sounds to me like a lot of extra tinkering ( case forming, etc.) for a gain of perhaps 100 FPS.

You haven't LIVED until you've experienced a Genny Cream Ale fart in a snowmobile suit. I've emptied my share of Genny cans over the last 50 years...For quite a few years now, they have been mostly Genny Light. However, in the last few months I have found myself buying Labatt's Blue Light more often. Must be the onset of dementia... Now what was I talking about ?

She can share my turkey blind ANY time, and I'll let her do all the calling !

I understand where you're coming from Paula Darlin'...NUTZ is NUTZ... It's just that the first few times I heard of eating such things they were from wild rams. One of my hunting buddies killed a stone sheep ram in BC back in the 80s, and his guide sliced and fried up the testicles for supper that night. As I said earlier in the thread, I am NOT especially squeamish about what I eat, but I draw the line at testicles and brains.

What a beautiful rooster ! I love chickens. I spent most of my time living in the country and now I am right in town, albeit a SMALL town.. One of the things I miss MOST about not being in the country is not having chickens. OH and the fact that I can't discharge a firearm in my backyard or pee anywhere in the yard that the urge strikes me.

10-4 Good Buddy...Good point... Gotcha covered...

Paula...I always thought that Rocky Mountain Oysters were from wild sheep.. Deer testicles are just "deer nuts".. Have you heard the difference between beer nuts and deer nuts ? Beer nuts are $1.25....Deer nuts are under a buck.

She who owns "The Thang" makes the rules.... If Momma ain't happy, ain't NOBODY happy...

REAL men drink whiskey straight, or at least on the rocks. It IS permissible to chase it with beer( preferably) or water (if no beer is available). Only gay guys ruin perfectly good whiskey by mixing it with soda pop. This must be where the penis bone swizzle stick originated.

Is there an echo in here ?

Kidneys are good as long as you boil the p*ss out of them.

Our commander in chief is six feet tall, has big ears, and IS a dork...True story

I wouldn't think that a trapping license would even be required to trap animals that are INSIDE one's garage or home and doing damage. Steel traps, snares, drowning buckets, whatever.. As long as you have the conibears, Chas, I'd set up some kind of baited cubby like Turkeyfeathers suggested, or blind sets or snares on the holes where they are entering, if you know where they are...

What's 12 feet long, white, and drags on the bottom of the ocean ? Moby's Dick...

Good shootin' Partner ! Don't tell me...You shot him with your 16 gauge, right ?...<<smile>>..

I've dated a couple of whales and they didn't have them, at least not as far as I could tell... " A policeman pulled me over the other night and said Sir, have you been drinking ?" " I said WHY, is there a FAT GIRL in my back seat ? ".....Larry the Cable Guy......

I just happen to have some of that on hand, also..Thanks for your input, Pistol.

Raccoons have a similar bone, and many years ago when I was a young buck, I gave one to my girlfriend's college roommate and told her it was a turkey call. I can still see her blowing on it and wondering why it didn't make any noise. She left school shortly after that and entered a convent. TRUE STORY, except for the third sentence...<<grin>>...

Yeah, Philo, I have data in a couple of my manuals ( the ones that aren't too old) and I also have gleaned some info from a couple of other forums. Sounds like a good candidate..Decent velocity and relatively low pressures..I'll have to see how my rifle likes it as far as accuracy goes. I have worked up excellent loads with RL 15 for both my 7MM08 and my 9.3 x 62, both sub MOA.. I was just checking to see if anyone on the forum had any personal experience with this powder in the '06..
