  1. Oh it's cheap, alright, Joseph.. I'll swap it for those 4 .303 Savage cartridges.. I have a modest collection of old shotgun shells and rifle and pistol cartridges...I don't happen to have any .303 Savage. PM me and I'll send you the priming tool ( depending on if I can FIND it since I have not used it for years) or I can stop by your place the next time I drive up Rte 11 to visit my daughter and grandson and drop it off in person.
  2. I did not want to imply that Eddie was wrong either...Perhaps not being quite so careful with primers will someday come back and bite me in my scrawny little butt... I certainly make sure my hands are oil and grease free ...I'm just saying that in the process of dropping the primers from the box on the bench, picking them up with my gnarled little (clean) dwarf fingers and placing them in the priming arm on my press, and then pressing them in (always with safety glasses) I HAVE NEVER HAD A PRIMER FAIL TO FIRE. Perhaps I have just been lucky.<<grin>>...
  3. Me neither, although I adamantly oppose banning of any detachable mags, because I feel it is simple harrassment of law abiding gun owners. I dislike detachable mags because they are noisy, more prone to malfunction, and many are just plain cheap and chintzy. My Rem 700 Mountain Rifle is a nice firearm EXCEPT for its cheap detachable mag, which I have to pay close attention to make sure it does not fail to feed. I never had any such problems with any of my hinged floorplate rifles.
  4. Hmmmm.. No harm in doing it the way that Eddie does it.. However, I have primed perhaps a couple thousand rifle casings with my Rockchucker press, not MANHANDLING the primers, but taking no extreme measures to NOT touch them with my fingers, and have never had a misfire.. I try not to over handle them, but don't worry about handling them enough to prime the cases with the press.. I bought a Lee hand priming tool years ago because it was recomended by SOMEONE, and, while it worked fine, I could see no advantage in using it rather than just priming the cases in the press..Does anybody WANT one ? I'll probably never use mine again.
  5. Do you like the divers to eat ? I never shot an Old Squaw or a scoter, but if they taste anything like the goldeneyes and buffleheads I have tried, YUCK !!!..hehehe.. Mallards, on the other hand are one of my favorite game birds on the table...
  6. Seems that Sam and Paula are talking about opposite ends of the cow...<<grin>>...
  7. Nice pictures and story Biz-R-O , ( as usual) Both your Dad's cat and yours were nice animals, but yours is a BIG ol' bobcat...Congrats...
  8. I used to work in a circumcism factory..... Pretty good job, really....500 skins a week, good tips, and a chance to get a head. After that, I worked as a gynecologist, but I had to give that up because I was developing tunnel vision.
  9. If you have the .35 Whelen, the .338-06 is redundant. The difference between the two ( plus the 9.3 x 62) in performance is not worth talking about. Perhaps you just want another headstamp on your cartridge casings..??.. Just kidding, Ken... A rifle looney can and should get one of each and every chambering he is interested in.. Just BECAUSE....<<grin>>...
  10. I am sure there is a thread about this subject in the archives, but there have been a lot of members who have come ( and gone) since we did one... What do you do for a living ? I am retired, but back when I worked for a living I was an engineering technician for a local technologies company, which was formerly a glass manufacturing company. I worked as a lab tech for years running tests invloving hot glass and ceramics, but when I retired, I was working in the company's Research Facility . I operated machine tools such as lathes, mills, grinders, etc that were set up with diamond tooling to machine glass and ceramics, rather than metal.
  11. Texaco Town...My partners and I used to stop there for breakfast on our way up pheasant hunting in the 60s and early 70s when there used to be PHEASANTS up that way...
  12. Larry...I had the money all ready to send, but decided that Krugerrands were safer than Euros... Then just before I was about to wire the money, you emailed me and told me it was a scam... Glad you caught me in TIME...!...(whew) Now I guess I'll have to spend the money on a gun or something.
  13. I knew something was wrong when I got that email from you.. I was waiting for the PUNCHLINE.. Good luck getting the mess straightened out. Are those of us who recieved the bogus email in any danger ? I did open it but did not reply.
  14. I never suggested that I ever shot at any animal and did not intend or expect it to have a quick death. If I shot at a coyote with a .22 rimfire, it would be in a circumstance where I thought I could kill it, which is certainly a reasonable expectation under certain conditions. I have shot 3 coyotes with shot loads while hunting other game..All were at close range and all were killed quickly... #6 shot WILL penetrate a coyote's shoulder blade at 20 yards..I can show you the shoulder blade to prove it. I have passed up shots at coyotes that I felt were beyond killing range with shot loads. I never shoot at ANY animal unless I feel I can kill it. I have killed 2 coyotes with a 7mm08 and one with a 9.3 x 62...No argument there. That Winchester .17 load sounds to me like it should kill a coyote at any reasonable range. If I had one in my hands tomorrow and had a good shot at a coyote at 150 yards, I would shoot with confidence that if I hit it well, I would kill it.. I might be wrong, but it wouldn't be the first time.
  15. No, Einstein, we are not comparing apples to apples... However, I contend that the published ballistics for this Winchester .17 RF cartridge are still SIGNIFICANTLY more powerful than the .17 HMR, and it MAY PROVE effective on coyotes.. Perhaps a few pilgrims here will shoot a few songdogs with the new cartridge and let you and me know how well it works.. Meanwhile, I'll keep shooting them with whatever firearm I happen to have handy when I see one.. Perhaps you can shoot one behind the ear with your pellet gun, considering your regard for shot placement.
  16. Maybe, maybe not...The .17 Remington centerfire ( basically a .221 Rem Fireball necked to .17 cal.) had a lot of proponents among the fur hunters 30 years or so ago. Admittedly the velocity was higher ( around 4000 FPS) but there were plenty of folks whose goal was recovering pelts, which were worth $50 to $75 PLUS who seemed to think the 25 grain .17 cal. bullets were an efficient fur harvestor. I wouldn't write this .17 rimfire off until there are field reports of its effectiveness,or lack thereof. Meanwhile you can shoot coyotes with anything you choose to shoot them with.
  17. Heck yes ...Not saying it's the epitome of coyote rounds, but I'll bet it would kill one.. Of course, I'd take a shot at a coyote with whatever gun I had in my hands..Last one I killed was with copper plated # 6 shot.
  18. I think that a 500FPS velocity increase with equal bullet weight is HUGE .. It's kinda like comparing a .22 Hornet to a .223. This will increase effective range over the .17 HMR plus increase energy ft/lbs at all ranges. Being a handloader, it's not my cup of tea, but if the accuracy is there, it certainly is a significantly more powerful cartridge than the .17 HMR..It might even prove to be a viable coyote killer...
  19. Happy Birthday, you Old Fart....<<grin>>....
  20. Nice picts, Growie ...Thanks for sharing ! What is a GFIL ?? Girl Friend In Law ?
  21. What are you hunting ? The 6 round capacity only applies to deer and bear. If you are hunting predators, such as fox and coyote, or small game , there is no limit to the magazine capacity.
  22. Hmmm... I have never had a primer detonate during reloading procedures, but I still wear my safety glasses just in case.. I have used small numbers of different primers, Remington, CCI and Alcan..I can't recall ever using Federal primers except for shotshell loading. The great majority of my loading has been done with Winchester large rifle primers.
  23. WNYBuckhunter...Thanks for the help posting the pictures.. Lawdwaz...Charley Bronson was hiding behind my truck..He tried to get into the picture and I punched him right in the KNEE !! <<grin>>..
