  1. Polychokes and other adjustable choke devices are very functional...Just yesterday I admired a Browning A-5 Light Twelve with a solid rib and a Cutts Compensator. How ever, many shooters just don't care for the big bulge on the end of the muzzle. Ever try to sell a shotgun with a polychoke on it ? It's like the kiss of death. Nothing will reduce the resale value of a quality vintage shotgun like a Win Model 12 or a Browning A-5 quicker than a polychoke.
  2. Our rights under the 2nd amendment have nothing to do with hunting.. Our God given rights to defend ourselves, our families and our property have nothing to do with hunting.
  3. My Browning choke tubes and my Remington choke tubes both have the choke stamped on the side of the tubes. The Brownings also have notches to indicate the choke when it is installed in the barrel.
  4. I bought my 10-22 in the late 1960s...I have 3 mags for it..Two of them have never malfunctioned. The third jams sometimes, so it never gets used. I have had a number of scopes on it, but presently it is sporting a fiber optic front bead and a rear peep..Great little rifle. When I first started dating my fiance' ( The Mermaid) she told me she had a .22. It turned out to be a near mint 10-22, so now we have two of them in the house. I have had 3 M77s, a 7x57, a 25-06 and a .338 Win mag. I never could get a decent group out of the 7 x 57, but the other two were both tack drivers. The .338 was a great shooter, but it kicked the snot out of me. I eventually replaced it with a 9.3 x 62 as my medium bore , heavy game/toothy critter rifle. Kicks less and performs as well on game, albeit at somewhat closer range.
  5. Elmo....Reminds me of the time I had Big Bob Xrayed by a female Xray tech... Poor little guy didn't live up to his nickname THAT day... I said " Gee, Miss, I think the little feller is CAMERA SHY...He went INDOORS"... She told me, " Don't be embarrassed...I do this all the time".. I told her, " SURE... I'll bet you have xrayed 8 or 10 penises just this morning " True story....
  6. Good luck, Larry.. I hope you turn out to be a perfect a**hole !!....<<grin>>...
  7. Hey Lee.. How you doing, Partner ? I knew it was you when you mentioned Tim Fralick and his box calls .. Welcome to the forum...Pretty good bunch of folks here overall...
  8. He has his head too far up his butt to keep his nose in the air... I'm glad I'm old enough so I won't have to put up with this commie pinko liberal BS for too many more years... Sorry for all of the younger folks who are going to have to endure it..
  9. I doubt any of you gun control supporters were ever in a situation where you NEEDED a gun and did not have one.. Well, I have been and it is not a pleasant memory. Fortunately, I survived that incident, but I swore that if I could help it, I never would be in that situation again. That's the main reason that I have not been in NYC since 1977, and never plan to GO there again.
  10. Yeah, I have...I just told the Doc to make sure they did the upper FIRST...hehehe.. Actually the procedure is a piece of cake..They give you some REALLY good drugs... The bad part is drinking all of that gunk they give you the day before and spending several hours within a step or two of the throne...
  11. I'm not a big fan, but I do enjoy watching a good football game. I just hope that it is a good close game, and I ESPECIALLY hope that my numbers pay off in the Superbowl Pool that I am in...<<grin>>..
  12. Guys like Jones are giving us right wing gun nuts a bad name...
  13. I don't want to sound like a wet blanket, but your chances of drawing a PA elk tag are probably slimmer than winning the POWERBALL....Especially if you are a NR... However, if you don't play you can't win..Good luck.. Meanwhile, start saving your $$$$ for a REAL elk hunt out west..
  14. There were several different Beretta O/U shotguns manufactured bewteen 1955 and 1967, according to my Blue Book.. In any case, it is a quality shotgun and I am envious... I think that Doewhacker is also envious, and since rumor has it that he is your illegimate son, I think it is only proper that you will it to him.. Doe...You can send me the check anytime..Glad to help... If your inheritance is slow in coming, perhaps you can invite Steve on a hunting trip... I'd suggest a quail hunt with Dick Cheney...
  15. Not really, 26" barrels are pretty much standard for double guns choked IC/Mod. I just recall Beretta selling an OU back in the 60s named " The Silver Snipe", which had a silver colored reciever, and a "Golden Snipe" which was somewhat more expensive and had, (guess what ? ) a GOLD colored reciever. Then, as now, Beretta made a quality shotgun. They probably made other models too..I'll have to check my 1963 "Shooter's Bible"....<<grin>>....
  16. Very nice, Steve... Is it a Silver Snipe, by any chance ?
  17. No Doe, I have the SKB side/side..I do have a buddy who has a mint SKB O/U that he bought (stole) for $400 from a widow, but he's the kind of guy who NEVER sells ANYTHING..The SKB sits in his gun cabinet and he hunts with an 870 express and a cheap POS Brazilian made .410 side /side.
  18. A friend of mine, who is in his 70s, recently had a good friend of his pass away. The other day the deceased gent's widow called my friend, and told him that her husband, who was an avid hunter, wanted HIM to have his firearms after he died. They are not junk, either...As I remember, he told that he aquired a Winchester over/under( probaby a 101 or a 96), an Ithaca over/under( probably an SKB) a 20 gauge Ithaca pump ( no doubt a M37) an Ithaca lever action .22 rimfire repeater, and a Belgium Browning 30-06 with a vintage Redfield scope (probably a High Power Safari Grade)...My friend has invited me down to inspect his new treasures, and I'm looking forward to checking them out and find out just exactly what they are.<<DROOL>>.... The ironic thing is, my buddy seldom hunts or shoots.
  19. I have never got one, and seldom had the flu until LAST YEAR... I contracted the flu last year and had to cancel a visit to my sister in Florida...Then I got it again this year and missed most of the final week of deer season.. NEXT YEAR, I will get the durn shot....Y'all remind me next year to do that...I CRS anymore...I think it's time for my nap...
  20. Point taken, Dinsdale.... The real reason is my fixed income...I'd rather spend what little I have left DOING things, rather than BUYING things.. And I do have most everything I may want to shoot covered fairly well.. .22 LR...17 mach II, 7mm08, .280 Rem,30-06 and 9.3 x 62. I also have shotgun bores covered pretty well, at least from .410 bore to 3 inch 12 gauge..
  21. The fact that you can't reload it is one big reason why I would not buy one.. However, this rimfire round is a BIG ballistic advance over the closest rimfire competitor, the .17 HMR, ESPECIALLY if it is offered with a bullet that is capable of penetrating enough to anchor game the size of a coyote. A barnes X comes to mind, along with numerous other tough bullets such as the Nosler partition or perhaps some of the tougher bonded bullets made by several of the bullet manufacturers. Given the proper bullet, this chambering would kick coyote ass at ranges significantly longer than those approached by the .22 WRM or the .17 HRM..
  22. I know lots of people favor woodies, and while I LIKE them very much, they are not my favorite..Everyone's tastebuds are different.. Here's my preference ...# 1 is teal...Wonderful flavor, just wish they were BIGGER.. # 2 Mallards or blacks...Although I have heard blacks get strong in later season, when they are more likely to be eating animal matter, the ones I have had have always been excellent..Inpossible to tell from mallards. # 3 Woodies...
  23. Rev...Do you have a particular rifle in mind ? I have often thought of buying another 7x57, but I currently have a 7mm08,which is nearly identical performance wise, and I need another rifle like I need another hole in my head..<<grin>>....
  24. The only that I have owned that are stored uncocked are the ones with a visible hammer or cocking piece. I had a problem once with a weak firing pin spring..However, that was with a Ruger M77 in 25-06 that I had bought brand new and had less than 200 rounds through, so it had nothing to do with storing the gun cocked for years and years.
  25. Yes I have Rev.. My first deer rifle was a M95 Chilean Mauser that I sporterized. I bought it for $35 in very good condition at a surplus store, cut down the barrel, had the bolt bent for scope, yada, yada. It was in my PRE-reloading days, so I shot factory loads in it.It was very accurate and killed well. I wish I still had it now in it's original military condition. It would worth several hundred bucks. After that I had a Ruger M77 ( tang safety) and it never grouped worth a hill of beans. I ended up peddling it, and learned later that the early Rugers were notoriously long throated and in order to get good accuracy you had to load long bullets in 160 or 175 grain and seat them out just as far as you could and still have them fit in the magazine. I was not a savvy enough reloader at the time to figure that out. I did manage to kill a couple of bucks with it, but soon sent it down the road. The 7x57 , in a modern rifle such as Ruger or M98 Mauser, is ballistically VERY close to the 7mm08. The recoil is somewhat milder than the 270/30-06 class of cartridges, but it kills just as well. Some factory loads have been loaded to lower pressures due to the number of M93 and M95 Mausers floating around out there. Those actions aren't considered as strong as M98 mausers or modern commercial bolt actions.
