  1. Okay, Elmo....I'll go ALL the way back... Farm worker, laborer( County Highway Dept.), grocery clerk ( A&P STORE), Postal Clerk 3rd class USN, laborer in a pallet factory, Lab Tech, Engineering Tech......
  2. Culver (LOL)... You're right about that ! The Fruit of the Loom briefs that I'm wearing right now were autographed by JIM PALMER....
  3. I agree that four power is a compromise in close cover...The scopes I used on my slug guns are both Steel tubed El Paso Weavers ( late 60s vintage) a K 1.5 and a K 2.5. Both are great scopes and have always served me well. I own two variables, a Leupold VX 2 1.5-4, and a Burris 2-7, which sets atop my current favorite whitetail rifle and is set on 2 power when I'm in the thick stuff.
  4. I am also a throwback... Due probably to the influence of O'Connor, Matunas, Hagel, Finn Aagaard and some modern gun gurus like John Barnsness I have preached the dependability and utility of low to moderate power quality fixed power scopes... Of the 3 scopes that I have used the most on my hunting rifles, two are Leupold fixed 4X and one is a Leupold fixed 6X... I paid around $125 each for the four powers at gun shows, and paid $160 for the six power from a guy online...All three scopes were in used but excellent condition. They are simple, ,dependable, foolproof, clear, have AMPLE eye relief, gather light very well in low light conditions.. I have used them under some very tough wilderness conditions , including some wilderness hunts when my rifle got soaked EVERY day... I have taken game animals with them at ranges from point blank to 400 yards, and have never missed an opportunity that I blamed on lack of magnification. All that said, so far , to my knowledge, I have convinced NOBODY that a high quality fixed power scope is a better choice on many hunting rifles than a cheap variable..<<sigh>>....<<grin>>....
  5. .....DAWG.... Growie....I had a beagle named George....Dumb as a box of rocks... My uncle had two black&tan coonhounds from the same litter..He named them "Sooner " and "Later"....
  6. I would sooner eat the south end of a northbound skunk than a stinkin' coyote... Bon Apetit... Let us know how it tastes. I have skinned 3 and had the pelts tanned..Nice cased pelts to hang on the wall... They are a major PITA to skin, though...Much more hassle than a coon or a fox.. I also had two skulls cleaned for euro type mounts..Pretty cool.. The other ones I shot were either mangy ( one) or were shot in Ontario , Canada, in spring gobbler season... Due to issues of less than prime fur plus import issues, they just were left to go back to nature..The landowners who allow me to hunt thier properties in Canada HATE them, and ask that any that are seen be shot.
  7. I'd buy it, if I were you... You certainly cannot buy a currently manufactured revolver of equal quality for that price...
  8. Things are probably different on LI, with milder weather than we usually get upstate.. However, I have had VERY limited success squirrel hunting here in SW NY after deer season.. Once the cold weather and snow sets in, the squirrels become semi- dormant..They remain more active right in the towns and villages where many people have bird feeders, but out in the hills, they tend to den up, unless you get a real mild spell of weather... Most years I consider squirrel season pretty much over after Xmas, at least where I live....
  9. Thanks, Growie...I'll call the place and get thier advice... One thing in my favor is that drainage is not a big factor..It's basically level ground...Large flat hayfield on top of a hill.
  10. Growie... Do you spread the lime as you get it (weather permiting, of course), or wait until closer to planting time ? Reason I ask..My property is truck accessible as long as the ground is frozen and we don't get too much snow...I'd considering having a 12 ton load spread, if it is a good option this time of year .
  11. The trooper has been called the "poor man's Python"... It is mechanically the same as the Python, but with less cosmetic features, such as the ventilated rib. All of the Colt handguns I have handled were very well made quality fireams. I suppose some of you younger folks don't remember the Colt Python, which was the CADDILAC of revolvers... Steve McQueen used one ( 2 1/2") in the movie "Bullet" which had the FIRST thrilling car chase on the cinema....I remember watching it on a big screen at a theater..It was AWESOME, and almost made me dizzy.. The next one was in "The French Connection" and there have been many since, but the "Bullet" chase still stands out in my mind as the first and one of the best.
  12. NY Safe Act...What an oxymoron... What they are doing certainly makes the state SAFER for the CRIMINALS, at the expense of the law abiding citizens..
  13. When The Mermaid and I boarded a plane in Sarasota, Florida yesterday morning, the temps were in the 70s... When we de-planed in Elmira yesterday afternoon, it was around ZERO... This morning it was so cold that I looked out in the backyard and saw a MINK wearing a FAT LADY....<<wink>>....
  14. As far as I know, the only autos that are unsafe with a round in the chamber and the hammer down are those based on the 1911. With most modern autos, the trigger must be fully depressed to fire, as G&R Cop said.
  15. At first glance, that is exactly what I thought it was.
  16. Good luck..I know Ruger was making some 9MM revolvers for awhile.. 45 ACP ? Smith has made several different large frame wheelguns in this chambering like the 1917 M&P.. Are you looking for a concealed carry gun ? Can't say if I ever remember any smaller frame .45 revolvers.
  17. Done...We need to FIGHT this legislation, rather than just sit around and pi** and moan about it...
  18. What a bunch of BS...!!... Whoever wrote that bill should be taken out and HANGED... Any politician who voted for it should be horsewhipped AND THEN tarred and feathered.
  19. I agree, Ants... I don't know what you are looking for, but I am in the process of buying a Smith Airweight M 638 for a carry gun... One thing I am confident of, due to my experience with my other S&Ws... It WILL go BANG when I need/want it to..
  20. Hmmmmmm... How come when there is some USEFUL legislation pending it takes FOREVER to get it passed, but when there is some ignorant , feel good, useless liberal BS to be passed, it happens RIGHT NOW...??... Once again...Glad I'm old enough so that I won't have to put up with this crap much longer.. I have never been so ashamed of my fellow Americans..
  21. Yeah..Fortunately, I just SOLD all my guns, except, of course, my handguns, which are registered..
  22. Exactly what species are these "black panthers" that you mention...? I have been somewhat of a student of worldwide animal biology over the years, not as a PHD, but as a person who is interested in such things... I never saw any documentation of a "black panther" unless you are talking about those black homo sapiens whose organization bears that name. The only black feline I ever have seen documented is a black phase of the jaquar, which exists in South and Central America, and occasionally gets as far north as southern Arizona in North America.. Tell us about these "black panthers" that supposedly exist in North America, especially as far north as New York.. Pictures or any biological evidence would be helpfull... Please educate me.
  23. Thanks for the visual... << P U >>.... Did everything come out all right ? Hehehehe...
  24. The 6 shot limit has always applied just to autoloaders. There is no limit for pumps, levers, or bolts, and never has been to my knowledge. Quite a few of the older lever guns held more than six shots, as do British SMLE bolt actions which hold ten.
  25. I don't recall hearing anything bad about them... The snubs are LIGHT... I guess I'll stick with my Smiths, though..Can't go wrong with S&W..Just ask Dirty Harry. I remember Son of Sam well...In 1977 I had to go to Mexico on business, and spent an overnight in NYC while getting my working visa from the Mexican consulate..I stayed at the home of one of my Navy buddies ( Smitty da COOK) right in the neighborhood where Sam was active at that time. He used a Charter Arms Bulldog in .44 Special... Before he aquired the "Son of Sam" monicker, he was known as "The .44 caliber Killer".... The guy was nuttier than squirrel s**t...
