Ain't no flies on the .308. The case has been the basis for several fine and successful chamberings, such as the .243, .260 rem, 7mm08, .358 Win and others. With bullets up to 165 grains, there isn't enough difference in performance between the .308 and the 30-06 to sneeze at. Only when you get to 180 bullets or heavier does the 30-06's extra powder capacity give a significant advantage. Within 300 yards or so,which is farther than many of us shoot, you could use a .270, .308, 30-06 or any one of a dozen other chamberings and never see any difference in ability to hit the target or the performance on game.

I have 3 or 4 trigger locks in each one of my guns.. You can NEVER be TOO safe !!...

I haven't noticed any problem with Winchester components, but I admit I have not purchased any lately ,except for primers. I use mostly Remington brass ( 7mm08 and .280) Lapua brass ( 9.3 x 62) and I have a mixture of brands, including Lake City military brass for my 30-06.. I'm loading Barnes bullets for hunting for the most part. I have used Winchester LR primers for years, and never had a bad one.

It's just something that I have to do ... lol. For me, I guess I won't be satisfied until they are all going into the same hole. It's a sickness. It's all about finding the absolute limits of the gun, the bullet, and myself. If I had enough money (And a place to do it), I would probably be one of these long distance shooter guys too. Man, that would be fun. But anyway there is always the fun of trying to achieve perfection. I agree that trying different loads, etc. to improve performance is a big part of the fun of handloading. However, keep in mind that these are hunting rifles, not benchrest rifles. I have never owned a rifle that was a one holer at 100 yards. I have a couple that group under an inch, and I consider that very good. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. That said, nearly all of the .270s I have shot have been VERY accurate. The one exception is a Win M70 Featherweight that belongs to a friend of mine..I worked with many different combinations of components, seating depth, yada, yada and the best I could get that rifle to shoot day in and day out was about a 2" group. Still, that is acceptable hunting accuracy. he kills deer with it every year.

Holy mackerel, Doc !! That is a fine group !! If you want to try to improve it, that is up to you, but WHY...?? I wish ALL my rifles grouped that well... Any load development you do now is acedemic...Have all the fun you want, but you sure don't need anything better than that for a hunting load.

It's a crime against nature to overcook venison.. The Mermaid has orders to WHIP me if I should overcook it.. Kinda makes it a win/win proposition..<<wink>>....

Looks so good it makes me want to SLAP my MOMMA !! Trouble is, I gotta wait a year to get another deer heart ... Guess I'll have to try it with some sliced up steaks..

Any Grouse or Quail hunters here?
Pygmy replied to shawnhu's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
I cut my hunting teeth shooting grouse..In 1962, I shot 14 with my 16 gauge Eastern Arms single shot, plus a couple woodcock. Over the years, we had some pretty good grouse hunting here in Steuben County. In the late 70s, early 80s, a couple of buddies and I limited out a couple of times ( 12 birds). We were hunting over a couple of springer spaniels at the time.. All three of us were shooting 20 gauge guns with field loads ( 7/8 oz.) of 7 1/2 shot..Two of us shot side by sides (IC/Mod) and the other guy shot a Rem 1100 Lt-20 in a mod choke. Nowadays, I might shoot a grouse or two a year while I am rabbit hunting..Due to habitat changes or whatever, the birds just are not here like they used to be. -
Beautiful Bluetick... Brings back memories...My Old Fat Father (affectionate nickname) was a coon hunter, and his all time best hound was a bluetick.

Go take a pill... And clean up your post...Last I knew, profanity such as yours was a no-no on this forum... You're not Diane Fienstein's brother, are you ??...

The poor performance with slugs is very typical of doubles.. Good to hear that both barrels shoot to point of aim with shot loads. I have seen a lot of them that didn't, mostly inexpensive guns of course. One reason that high quality double guns cost as much as they do is because it takes a certain amount of hand fitting to regulate the barrels to shoot to the same point of aim. Any hand fitting tends to be expensive. Sounds like you have a nice rig there.

New gun in the safe...............................
Pygmy replied to waterweasle's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
Whatever floats yer boat..... Good luck and have fun...Do you have a place to shoot it at long enough range to realize it's potential ? -
Wrong poster, Doc... It's Biz-R-O World that has the stuffed dog.

Santa ?? I thought that was a remarkable likeness of ME !

Yeah..Hogs will kill and eat anything they can catch, including small children.. Remember how upset the hired men got when DOROTHY fell into the pig pen ?..hehehe..

I'm sure a grinner would kill a chicken under the right circumstances, but over about 40 years having chickens, I can never remember losing one to a possum..Just eggs.. I have lost my share to coons, foxes, and hawks, however. I nearly lost some to a mink once..There was snow on, and the mink tracks led right up from the creek toward my chicken coop...He never quite made it..My yard dawg intercepted Mr Mink and he was laying outside my back door when I found him.

Put a couple of those tin foil hats aside for me, Doe.. You can keep the tinfoil jockey shorts, though... Poor ol' Big Bob and the Boys get cold and shriveled up just at the thought of those things.

I prefer to fry it , but I have had good luck pickling it also. Simmer the heart in water with salt, coarse black pepper and a bay leaf until done, about two hours.. Allow the heart to cool in it's broth.. Slice the heart crossways about 1/4" thick...Slice an onion or two about the same thicknes. It a glass, ceramic or plastic dish alternate layers of heart and onion, seasoning with salt and pepper. Mix 50/50 vinegar and water and a tablespoon of pickling spices. Pour over heart and onion to cover.. Refrigerate for 3 or 4 days before eating..
