crazy buck attacks dead buck, new full story
Pygmy replied to stevenjackson's topic in General Hunting
I'd have shot the SOB and pleaded self defense.... -
I haven't been up that way this winter, but most years in February there are 1000s rafted up on Seneca...They are visible on the water from Rte. 14 on the west side, especially around Kashong Point, and I have often seen them feeding in some of the big fields along Rte. 414 north of Ovid. There is more open water north of here this year than normal. perhaps they are not down here in as large numbers as most years.

At 20 feet you are not going to see much difference in point of impact. I'd use the cheapest, mildest loads for practice at close ranges and save the hotter stuff for carry use.

L.C. Smith double barrel shotgun for sale
Pygmy replied to chiefbkt's topic in Hunting Items For Sale and Trade
Hmmm..Barrels look minimum 28 inch...I'd say 30 or 32 inch.... NICE old American made shotgun.... -
I have not renewed my Pa. permit in a few years..I used to keep it current because I was fishing in areas with lots of rattlesnakes.. Seems like it was $25 for 5 years or something like that.. All I had to do was appear at the Sherrif's office in Tioga County and show my NY permit..They then issued me my PA permit for CC..

HooBoy... I'm glad I decided to come up to the north country to visit my daughter NEXT weekend instead of this weekend.. Hopefully the weather will be a little better then.

It would be very optimistic to expect 1"-2" groups from a .410 or ANY smoothbore shotgun at 50 yards, especially considering the fact that most .410s are tighly choked and equipped with simple bead sights, rather than adjustable rifle type sights. One exception might be the Winchester 9410, which I believe is cylinder bore and has adjustable sights. The size of the projectile has nothing to do with accuracy. The limitations exist because it is a SMOOTHBORE, CRUDELY SIGHTED shotgun. Addition of a scope or more precision adjustable sights would shrink groups somewhat, but you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Considering the tight chokes, smooth bore and lack of good sights, I'd say if you could 6" groups at 50 yards you'd be doing pretty good. I know at this point someone is going to tell me about his smoothbore single barrel that shoots one hole groups at 50 yards, but that's the exception rather than the rule. Shucks, an old (R.I.P.) friend of mine had a Winchester M12 16 gauge, smoothbore of course. He claimed that with that gun he could blow a hole in a hummingbird as big as your fist at 50 yards..<<grin>>...

We have about 2" here in south central Steuben and it appears to be about over.. No need for the snowblower..I can just scrape it off by pushing a shovel....

Just bought Beretta Bobcat 21A for wife

The OP mentioned $2 or a box of 50.. That would make it a .22 rimfire... With high velocity HP ammo, it is certainly more effective than the .25 ACP.. Deliver 3 or 4 rounds center mass on the mugger...I'm betting that he will cease his anti social activites, hopefully PERMANENTLY... -
I'll bet it was JIMMY HOFFA ! The guys that whacked him decided to defrost thier freezer... I can hear the conversation now.. " Hey GUIDO....What'sa in-a dis bag ? It'sa been in-a here for YEARS "

Thermacells work GREAT, Darlin'... The only thing is that if you are walking, or moving along in any manner, they are not that effective, since the fumes are staying behind you.. If you are in one spot, they work great..I have used them while spring turkey hunting in Maine in early June, when the skeeters and blackflies are UNBEARABLE... Sit down against a tree, fire up the thermacell, and in less than 5 minutes the bugs are GONE.. I use it here in NY during gobbler season also..Works great.

" The Mother of all Blizzards "...... The forecast has been updated for my area..Now they are predicting 6" to 12", although we are still south and west of the heaviest snowfall.. My snowblower is ready to roll..Already used it twice this year. I'd better grab an extra 30 pack of beer, though...

Geeze....He'd have been a DANDY next year.... -
Dom, ol' buddy, if it were ME making the rules, I'd let you use your .410 for deer.. Back in the late 30s when the southern zone had it's first deer seasons, somebody probably arbitrarily decided that we shouldn't use buckshot and that the 20 gauge was the smallest shotgun gauge to be used for deer and bear. Since then , there has been no good reason to change the regs. If it were legal, I'd have no problem with you using your .410 for deer as long as you know it's limitations. I have owned several .410s ( down to one right now) and have shot lots of bunnies, squirrels and a few grouse and woodcock with them.

Hello from Turkey, Whitetail hunter in Allegany County
Pygmy replied to outdoorsman44's topic in Introductions
Welcome to the forum... I lived for a couple of years in Whitesville, and in 1973, I got my first REPLY (gobble) from a gobbler near there...Didn't kill one until 1975, though... I haven't hunted there in years, but I usually make it down to the Genessee around Shongo and Stannards to fly fish for trout a couple times a year.. Nice country...keep at the turkeys -
I heard that Bubba relocated... He finally landed his dream job as a quality control technician in a brothel in Montreal.. I asked him if they had any more openings and I'm on the waiting list for an interview, right behind Doewhacker, Steve 863 and Bill Clinton.

Any pictures, Al ? I have seen a few of those cut down Krags that are nicely done. The cartridge has a lot of nostalgic appeal, as well as being a very capable game cartridge, and those Krag actions are SO buttery smooth..

Good luck....Here in southern Steuben we are supposed to be right on the SW edge..They are predicting 1-3" and I hope they're right...I am hoping for a snow-free window sometime before the spring thaw so I can get a truckload of lime spread on my food plot. If you get a bunch of snow, be careful out there... On a sober note, a friend of mine dropped dead shoveling snow a couple days ago. I'm going to his funeral Friday...

Very nice... I am indeed envious... Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away, in a former life, I had a nice Man cave... Mine was done in pine, also, except it was 1 X 12 reverse board and batten.. Enjoy yours...How 'bout inviting me over for a beer sometime ? ... <<grin>>....
