  1. That's a beauty of a six point, Larry... I'm guessing 3 1/2 years, considering the weight. he just never got around to growing any brow tines...hehehe.. Your buddy's 10 is a dandy, too.
  2. I wrap with clear freezer wrap ( like Saran Wrap or others) and then place it in Ziploc Freezer bags. You can open the ziploc, take out a serving and reseal the bag. I can get two or three individually wrapped helpings in a quart ziploc.Works well for me and keeps without freezer burn for a year.
  3. What Lawdwaz and the guy with all the consonants said...
  4. Pygmy

    Chickens

Yes, Elmo, they will lay eggs... And hens will make a minimum of noise, compared to a rooster. You will still have to deal with chicken poop, though...
  5. WNYBuckhunter is correct on the femoral artery shot.. If you hit that, they leave a blood trail that Stevie Wonder could follow and they don't go far. I don't endorse shooting a deer in the hindquarters, but am only sharing my observations after 45 years of deer hunting. Things don't always work out perfectly, and it ain't always pretty, but if it gets the job done, it's fine with me.
  6. Holy CALCIUM, Batman !! What a TOAD !!
  7. Congrats on the new toy, Doc ! It must have been a big step, since you are a self admitted cheapskate !! <<wink>>... We'll be looking forward to the range reports.. Do you intend to handload for it ? I do not own a .270, but I load for a couple of my friends that do..I'd gladly pass on any info I have..
  8. Good shooting Biz-R-O... Congrats on a nice clean kill.. I assume you're having hin mounted ?...
  9. You guys seem so worried about what everybody ELSE is doing that you have a hard time enjoying the sport... Too bad that nobody but YOU knows how to do things properly.... Oh well..No skin off my beak...Time for my nap, so I can stay awake to watch "Boardwalk Empire" and then get up and enjoy another morning in the woods tomorrow, despite all of those inept clowns that don't know how to hunt properly.
  10. Of course you can shoot them if you see them.. They are not native ( or protected) species and there are are no regulations protecting them. Shoot away... Probably you need a hunting license, just as you would to shoot a woodchuck or a red squirrel..
  11. He HEARD what he thought was a wild pig....Hmmmm... Could be.... Might he also have heard a whitetail buck grunting on the trail of a doe ?? Sounds kind of similar... I have heard both.. Not saying that he did NOT hear a pig...There have been some comfirmed cases of feral hogs and escapee game farm hogs here in the state.. I'm just saying that without actual sighting of the critter, I would be somewhat skeptical..
  12. When was it 1/2 hour before until 1/2 hour after ..??... Please enlighten me... As I recall, 45 years ago, it was 7:00 AM until 5:00 PM... Since then it has been sunrise until sunset.. Must be you were hunting prior to 1965.. How old are you..??..
  13. Best of luck to all... I just told the Mermaid to get her taste buds set for some fresh deer liver, because I'm gonna KILL one tomorrow...
  14. Since my area has gone to rifle, rather than shotgun only, I hear MUCH less shooting, and instead of the 5 round volleys that used to be the norm, most of the time I hear single shots. Safety wise, switching to rifle is the best thing that has happened in this area in the 45 years I have been deer hunting. Sighting through a scope sighted rifle is much safer than spraying shotgun slugs all over the countryside.
  15. I have a "New Ithaca Gun"..... It is a 12 gauge made in 1899...It has twin twist steel 30" full choke barrels and exposed hammers. My dad bought it used in the late 1930s... It is in excellent condition for it's age. So what's your point ??
  16. Doc, old buddy... As I'm sure you have gleaned from all this discourse, there are MANY good choices in rifles and chamberings.. But for medium game, ( such as deer) a bolt action in .270 Win is NEVER a bad choice... I think you are on the right track... Good luck and have fun....
  17. I'll bet Growie has one too...She wove it out of the hemp that she grew in her food plot. Nice double duty garment. You can either smoke it or wear it.
  18. When I saw the title of this thread, I almost didn't dare click on it. I was afraid that someone had posted a picture of Bubba in a THONG...
  19. I'll be hunting in 8X Saturday....After that, who knows ? I have access to good spots in 8T and 8Y also...
  20. I was fortunate enough to NEVER miss an opening day of southern tier gun season since 1965. I even managed to get leave for deer season when I was on active duty in the Navy. There is nothing quite like it...I still get excited, maybe not like when I was young, but I hope it will remain a special day as long as I am able to continue hunting.
  21. Them armored dildos are challenging critters... A few years ago while I was hog hunting down in Georgia, one came ambling past and I decided to try and catch it. In my misspent youth, I caught many a possum by running after it and grabbing it by the tail. What's an armored dildo ? Nothing but a possum on the half shell. I put down my rifle and took off after it. I quickly learned that an armored dildo can run MUCH faster than a middle aged, slightly overweight, stubby legged Pygmy. It's a wonder I didn't have a heart attack. I decided if I wanted to bring one to hand, it's easier just to shoot it.
  22. So what is it about the 30-30 that makes it so inferior ? It has accounted for tons of venison over the years, as have many calibers with similar ballistics, like the .32 Win special, the .25, .30 and 32 Remington, the 25-35 Win. the .44 Magnum, lesser rounds like the .38-40 and 44-40... They all kill deer well with good shot placement, as does the .223, .270 Win, .308 or whatever.
  23. Anything under 3" is considered antlerless in PA, and NY for that matter...
  24. Good luck, Sam...Those spikes and forkies make good freezer fillers <grin>... Nothing wrong with being selective, though, if killing bigger bucks is more important to you than meat. It's pretty tough to manage for big bucks with only 80 acres UNLESS you have neighbors that play by the same rules.
