Surprised there wasn't a bunch of bucks dropped on here today. I didn't see nearly as many deer as I figured I would on my drive home from work this morning. Everything was frosty but the fields were empty. I didn't make it out today. Wanted to, but I'm coming down with some kinda nasty chest cold or something. Figured I needed the sleep today. Woke up feeling even worse, back at work now on the edge of ODing on cold and flu meds from CVS. Headed for the doctor in the AM after work to get some strong meds. Need this gone by next Friday when I leave for Nebraska. Good luck to everyone going out tomorrow morning!

Picked up some new base layers from cabelas last week. On sale 29.99 for a 3 pack of tops and the same price for the 3 pack of bottoms. Comes in 3 weights, light, med and heavy. I've been shopping around for new base layers and for $60 I couldn't pass up the sale. I wore the light weight set the other day when it was kinda warm out and they worked well under my light weight Sitka outfit. Used the heavy weight ones yesterday morning and evening under the same Sitka outfit to see how warm they are. I got a bit of a chill after a few hours in the morning but I'm pretty happy with the performance seeing as my Sitka outfit is extremely light weight and meant for walking not stand sitting. Compared to the prices of other base layers I was looking at, I'm pretty pleased with these so far.

Where are those plots?
Adkhunter1590 replied to growalot's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
My deer are hammering my winter wheat. I've been hunting over my new plot a lot this year and from what I'm seeing, WW is a winner for me. I had 10 days without rain after seeding WW, oats, turnips. Everything germinated well after the first bit of rain we got, and the morning dew helped get things started. But we went almost a month after that with no rain so everything kinda got stunted. But the WW has grown the tallest and thickest of the bunch. The deer are spending more time in the section of the field I did WW. Not to say they don't like the oats, but they just hang out and eat more in the WW. Turnips got stunted pretty good in most areas but some of it is coming up pretty good. Need a good freeze before they start tearing those up. The nice thing about WW is that it grows anywhere. I work at a flour mill so we have millions of pounds of it and the stuff that's spilled outside grows all over the place. It is great late season and winter forage as well. When everything else turns brown and dead and the snow flys, deer will flock green anything fields. -
Back in the ground blind. Still very windy here. Two fawns in the plot when I walked up. They took off when they saw me. That was at 350. 405 two big does come out. Moving much earlier so far, hope the bucks do the same.

Well I guess I could munch on some oats and winter wheat, maybe a few turnips leaves if I'm feeling it. I'm sitting under a burr oak that's dropping lots of acorns too. I'd have to fight the little one off for all this though

This World Is Insane!
Adkhunter1590 replied to DirtTime's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
I don't think the world has changed too much. People have been slaughtering each other for thousands of years. In even bigger numbers than this also. The difference is with today's media we know all about everything within hours of it happening. If anything, today is much less bloody than a couple thousand or even a couple hundred years ago. So I guess you could say that we are on the upside of things... -
I got lucky, my Generac was already here and hooked up when I bought the house 2 years ago. They sure are awesome! I just checked my propane tank for it yesterday and it's on 70%. So it's only used 30% in 2 years. No big long power outages during that time, I think it was on for 4 hours one time. Other than that it's just been the 15 min test runs every Thursday at 9am.

Well I got up in the stand at 6. Wind is whipping up here, dressed one layer light for this kinda wind and temps. Forgot my warmer gloves to. Decided to get down and hike back to my ground blind to keep warmer. Two fawns in the food plot as I walked up. I watched them for about 15 mins before I decided I needed to get them out of the field so I could get in the blind. Tossed a big stick at them and they bolted for the woods. Slipped into the blind quick and I'll be here for awhile.

Mowed today. Hoping it's the last time but I kinda doubt it.

Well I'm gonna sit out again this afternoon. Way to warm. That and I've been neck deep in the honey do list all weekend so I might as well continue working on that before taking off for Nebraska next week
-
Congrats JMP on the bear harvest! Awesome job with that recurve. You recurve guys are really starting to make me tempted to pick one up in the off season to try. Worked 14 hours till 9am. Brought my neighbor his weekly ton of corn. Now it's on to the honey do list. If I have any energy left, I'll go out for the evening hunt. Not sure if I'll bother waking up early tomorrow, looking pretty warm. Catching up on some sleep might beat out a warm October morning sit.

Holy molely you've opened a can of worms. Nice long shot with the bow though. Glad ya found it and finished the harvest.

One fawn so far. I'm sure the other one and mama are close

Jumped in my ground blind quick. It's getting late and I didn't have time for camo so black hoodie and the ground blind it is. Bit windy out.
-
Yep still mowing once a week here. But like most others said, just to keep up on the leaves mostly.

Napped for 3 hours and I'm up in a tree before work. Spent most the day dropping car off at body shop and picking up a rental. But the weather is nice and temps are dropping up here on the hill so I needed to sit in the woods. Let's see what comes out for a snack tonight.

Except "unethical shot" doesn't have a definition set in stone. That's purely personal unless written in law what's considered "unethical". Plenty of people can shoot very well at those ranges. That guy is obviously one of them. He also obviously spent way more time practicing those types of shots. Cross bow hunter could have just bought the bow 45 mins ago and sent a bolt downrange at the first doe he saw come out. Having spent no time practicing, or learning about long range shooting.

Exactly why every truck I ever own will get a ranch hand bumper. Well worth the cost for the piece of mind. My wife tells me all the time about the stuff she hits or bumps with it so I'm glad it's there lol

One of the best $1800 I ever spent.

Well we were giving him the vitamin D through a dropper like the doctors showed us but he took a big deep breath right as my wife squeezed the dropper bulb and he sucked in a big shot of that vitamin D stuff. The vitamin stuff was kinda thick almost like maple syrup so it got caught in his little lungs and he was having problems breathing. I was sound asleep middle of the day and my wife woke me up screaming bloody murder that she thinks our son is dying. I have my CPR and first aid courses so I tried doing a few things to free his airway but didn't have much luck. That's when we jumped in the truck and I hauled ass passing everyone and their mother to get to the hospital. Kids can scare the hell out of you in no time
-
Made by Ranch Hand in Texas. I've got 12 deer kills with it and destroyed a metal guard rail parking barrier at the hospital when I raced there when my newborn was choking on vitamin D liquid we were giving him. He was turning blue so I raced down the mountain to the hospital and didn't come to a full stop fast enough before blasting through the guard rail, chipped some paint off the bumper but that's it.

Thanks. Ya it's not something any of us like having happen but o well what can ya do. This is exactly why I like driving my truck with the big bad deer slayer front bumper it's got. I've whacked many deer with that truck and it doesn't matter. This Honda folded up like a piece of paper at 47ish mph. I can only imagine what a high speed wreck would look like in this thing
