Things can look WAY different in the dark. Even on familiar grounds things can look different on a very dark night. Add fog and things are even worse. I don't know if it's allowed on public grounds, but nailing those reflector tacks onto a tree can surely help you navigate in the dark. They can reflect a long way, although fog might hamper things a bit.

There you go! It is always best to keep ones full attention to what is around you, and leave these electronic gizmos in your pocket or backpack. Also i-pods. When I hear people say that they listen to music while on the stand I just can't believe it. There have been MANY deer that I've heard well before I ever saw them. Most especially hunting in wooded environments like we do in NYS when they walk over downed foliage. If I had my ears plugged up with an i-pod, I probably would have never heard them or seen them.

What I find funny is seeing people posting on this forum while on their stands. Makes absolutely NO sense to me. OK, I can see someone wanting to take a phone with them for safeties sake, but why fuss around with these contraptions when you are supposed to be hunting? I guarantee that sooner or later these hunters will miss spotting a deer while playing with these things. Email friends and post to forums when you get back home. In the woods one should be looking and listening for game movement and not looking at this forum. I know that's what I will do when I get out there.

Congrats, dandy buck! I had a hunch there would be some nice bucks killed early on now that the season opens earlier. I tell you, I have seen MORE nice bucks in early October than at any other time. I have no doubt there will be some more killed in the next week or so. For me early October beats any rut!

That has been my observation as well. They don't want others shooting young bucks or does, in hopes that all these deer grow and reproduce more BIG bucks for them to shoot. Makes me think that what many of them really want is to demoralize the rest of us by not leaving anything for us to legally kill. Demoralize us to the point where we quit hunting altogether which will then leave more land and game for them. People will accuse me of making this crap up, but it don't take a rocket scientist to figure out where this is going. They put us down for shooting a 1.5 year old forkhorn, so tell me they wouldn't prefer that we weren't in the woods altogether??

We told you why the bucks don't grow like on LI. It is the limited access. Close down most of the areas upstate to hunter access like on LI and you will have big bucks running around up there also. Dude, to be honest with you, you don't know squat. Do you realize that many of the AR units in the Catskills either don't give out DMP's or give out very few? So how the hell will these people shoot several does before they shoot a buck? The reason there are big bucks on LI is because it's a suburban environment with very limited hunter access. It is NOTHING like other deer habitats around NYS.

That is exactly what happens. Like these hunters are passing the 2.5 year olds?? BS! Most especially in many of the AR units where doe permits are very hard to get. Like these guys will go out to hunt and limit themselves to nothing??? Yeah right. Why even bother going out then? What I can't stand is these AR proponents talking down to those who shoot 1.5 year old spikes or forkhorns, and then go thumping their own chests when they shoot that 2.5 or maybe even a 1.5 buck that happens to have at least 3 points on a side.
