What a silly story! You would think that police department would have brought them to a gunsmith or sent them back to Remington and had them fixed instead of scrapping them and buying different rifles. The story is nothing but an overreaction to nothing. What is even funnier is that now they are using M-16's instead!

I myself don't see it being a big deal having to flip the gun off safe to open the bolt. One should always point the gun in a safe direction either way, so having the bolt lock on safe will probably save you a few lost cartridges along the way if you hunt with it long enough.

Unless he sends it back to Remington or takes it to a gunsmith to have the trigger/safety changed or modified, I don't know of a way.

I think you need not worry about any of this. Go out and buy it.

My humble opinion is that if a slug of that design hit some serious flesh, innards and or bone, you would see way more deformity on it. I doubt that it would just zip thru and be as intact as you found it. Since you found brown and white hair and some flesh on the slug, my opinion would be that it was just a flesh wound somewhere where brown hair meets white on the deer. Thus I don't think we can say that the slug did not perform in this case at least.

I guess the only advantage to having the bolt locked while the safety is on is that you won't have the bolt accidently snagged open by foliage and have the chambered cartridge dumped on the ground. I HAVE had this happen to me. I guess it's a small inconvenience for an added measure of safety.

A number of guns still lock the bolt when the safety is on. I know the older Ruger's and Remington's used to be that way, but now the Ruger has a 3 position safety like the Winchester and Remington no longer locks the bolt with the safety on. I know Browining A-bolts at least the older models lock the bolt also, along with Sako rifles. My Remington 700 which I bought new back in 1985 does not lock the bolt, so it's been a good while since Remington revamped things.

Whew, for a second there I thought you were going to say that they also support....., oh well never mind.

I guess if you lose your wedding ring in a gut pile you can always use an excuse on your wife that she isn't feeding you well enough thus your fingers have gotten thinner and the ring slipped right off! Worth a try anyway.

What was 98 yards away? The arrow that you retrieved or the animal standing there?

I honestly never could figure out why some hunters feel that the only guns they could shoot are .223's or .243's and have the fear of God put into them if anyone suggests something a little more potent? It's not like it's going to feel like a Mike Tyson punch to the jaw if one tries to shoot a .308, .270, 30-06, etc for even a smaller framed guy. It really isn't that difficult to handle the recoil of these better overall choices for deer, yet many hunters cry in pain at just the thought of shooting one.

That is one regulation they probably should have kept! I know I would get arguments about the .243, but one thing I can't handle is guys going hunting with their rigged up AR-15's in .223 thinking they are ready to hunt deer with them. The .223 is far from an adequate deer rifle!

I think one should always take into consideration where one will be hunting. If one knows that they won't be able to get a deer out of the place or probably have a heart attack getting it out, then one should probably not hunt there.

Oooh, now that is bad. Might be the last deer you take. If you want to remain married that is. LOL Now if you lost your wallet with all your credit cards and $5000 in cash would be one thing, but losing your wedding ring is a whole other story. And inside a gut pile makes it 10 times as bad. By tomorrow morning you may need to exterminate every coyote in your area if you ever hope to find that ring again!

Fair enough. I can always cut and paste Culver's buck on the other threads! If it were one of the AR's supporters who had shot a buck like that, I have NO doubt that we would have been hearing about AR's.

HAHAH thats pretty funny!!! Glad you thought it was humorous. If one of those boys ever saw a buck like that they would become completely unglued and would probably miss it by a country mile. Only the person doing their laundry would know the real truth of what actually happened. LOL

Yeah, I will agree that there are some who only hunt a few hours and then complain that they see no deer, but 5-10 days of gun hunting that most of us do out of a season that is about 23 days long isn't a heck of a lot either. I wouldn't be expecting many of these people who hunt for only 5-10 days to be happy with added regulations where it would make it even harder for them to take a deer. That is why I think something like AR's doesn't swing with the majority of hunters out there, no matter what some of these polls people keep posting might say.

Small minority of hunters have only a few days to hunt?? I would bet that the vast MAJORITY of hunters who buy big game licenses don't hunt more than 5 to 10 days in a season. You guys who are out hunting just about every day are the minority, that is for darned sure!
