  1. A guy I used to work with had a friend who used to call him in the office where I worked. Most of the time he wasn't at his desk, so the friend told our receptionist that "dick hertz" was calling him. It was so funny to hear the receptionist page this guy around the office saying "dick hertz is on line one for you". The receptionist was a bit dense, so she never figured this gag out.
  2. I am not a big fan of the .243. You are 15, almost a man. A .270 is a whole lot better in my opinion and not very difficult to handle at all for someone your age. You will be pretty much set forever with the .270.
  3. You should recommend him for hiring. You can be the first to call him over the PA system. "D**ck Puffer, please report to human resources"! LOL
  4. Why does this deer look alive to some of you?? And what about the eyes that is making it look alive?? Deer don't die with their eyes closed as many humans don't either. I sure don't get the impression that it's alive. I have had deer fall down in all sorts of ways. I think this one just fell down in a position that might make it look like it wants to get up, that's all. I have even seen alive ones that looked dead. The deer I killed with the bow this year was alive when I walked up to it, but immobile. Actually took a photo of it while it was still alive, but won't post it here.
  5. OK, but does fracking benefit antler growth? I am sure they would get lots of landowners signing up if that was the case.
  6. You might be right. I am sure we will see them cut and paste their biological reasons for it shortly from the QCTMA (Quality Christmas Tree Management Association).
  7. LOL! Speaking of sissy's, we haven't heard the AR supporters voice their opinions on this topic yet.
  8. Sorry Bubba, but I have seen more than one of your posts where you get on YOUR high horse and are critical of people's shooting abilities and then proceed to tell us how you kill your deer with that single shot rifle of yours. Yes, we should all try to get as proficient as possible, but there are constraints for many people and these constraints shouldn't necessarily take them out of the hunting pastime. Many of us are weekend warriors, whether we want to admit it or not. That is all the time we can devote to it for various reasons. No reason that these hunters should be put on any inferior list. If only those who put every minute of their free time to shooting and scouting were allowed to purchase a hunting license, I think NYS or any state for that matter would sell mighty few licenses.
  9. So we can gather that YOU never wounded one?? I say BS. If you haven't, then you haven't hunted long enough. I don't give a damn how good a shot someone is. If you hunt long enough it WILL happen. Plus, are you absolutely sure that any one that you might have missed, was with all certainty actually missed?? I doubt anyone can know with absolute certainty in all situations. No one wants to wound an animal. Thinking that one has such superior skill that it can't happen to them is just as silly a notion as the person who goes out unprepared and expecting a good outcome.
  10. I am all for getting proficient with ones weapon. I myself sure know that I don't practice nearly as much as I used to, yet I can still put a deer down when I see one and haven't wounded one for a good many years now. I think many hunters are in the same boat as me. Time to devote to actual hunting is limited for most. In your book does that mean these guys shouldn't be allowed to hunt at all if a few days is all they can devote to it? You are one of the guys here who keep saying that hunters should pass up smaller deer and let them grow, so you probably wouldn't mind having these hunters not hunt at all? They might let the little ones grow up for you to shoot a year or two down the road. LOL
  11. Well, you did state in your second post on this thread that it takes a lot of skill killing a mature buck. I wouldn't necessarily disagree with that, but there are plenty of people who kill good bucks with generally little skill but somehow had plenty of luck on that particular day. Also, if a person somehow has access to some really good deer habitat, is that considered luck or skill? Was it skill or luck that he was somehow able to acquire it in a lease, inherit it, or buy it? Whether it is luck or skill, can everyone really ever be in the same boat?? Lots of factors out there, no matter how hard someone tries, that are beyond ones control. Most people don't have the time or means to devote to something as irrelevant in the scheme of things as hunting is. They just go out and try to enjoy a day in the outdoors as best as they can and whether it was skill or luck that made their hunt successful or not isn't really given much thought by most.
  12. Sure sounds like you think you have control over everything. What many hunters don't have control over is the time they can devote to hunting. For many it's only a limited amount of time. Some of these people have to make do with the time they have and it's not like they can ever get nearly as much control over some of these factors as some others could. Some of us do the best we can, and hope that some luck is thrown into the mix from somewhere. Nothing wrong with that either. Those who think they kill deer because of their superior hunting skills probably are the same people who look down at people who are happy killing a forkhorn or a fawn just because they want some meat in the freezer. These people managed to kill a deer just the same as anyone else, so exactly how much skill does it take to kill a deer?? If you only measure skill by killing big bucks, then of course many of these big buck killers will think they are supermen in the skills department when they compare themselves to just about anyone else out there. There is way more to hunting than killing big bucks for many people.
  13. Hmmm. Adirondacks are nice. I have vacationed there several times. As far as the best scenery on the planet? Not even close in my opinion. Not even the best in our country. Just my .02. I guess we just have to agree to disagree-I've traveled all over the world in North America, Europe and Asia and still like the Adirondacks best. But I suppose it's a distance factor too, I can take a week to drive to Alaska or an hour to drive to the Adirondacks-makes the choice easy for a weekend getaway. Yes, you are right about the distance factor. That is why I like the Adirondacks also, because they are easy to get to. But I just can't see how visually they can compare to other spots in the US and elsewhere that are far more breathtaking to look at. Everyone has their own tastes, that's for sure.

  15. Darn, the title of the thread had me fooled. I thought it would be about something other than Christmas trees I am lucky that my wife is happy with anything, even one of those potted miniature trees that you just throw out after the holiday. Some people go all out crazy with decorating. Where do they even keep all this stuff the rest of the year?? We keep it very simple at our house.
  16. I posted a picture of the one deer I took this year back in early November as a postscript to a thread I had started. It is up to you to find it. ANY deer is a good deer to me, so it surely isn't up to me to back up any claims about how great AR's are and why everyone else should be behind them. You guys keep claiming that big bucks are now roaming your units. Some of us others would like to see some proof behind your claims.
  17. Maybe that is why some guys want to use AR-15's and other para-military weapons for hunting. With a bayonet attachment on these guns they could club a deer to death and then proceed to gut, skin and butcher it with one swing of the barrel. Now if they could only vacuum pack the meat for me, I just might get me one of these guns.
  18. I for one would never feel confident going hunting with a gun that was only bore sighted. Firing at paper would be the only way for me.
  19. That doesn't need to be written permission does it? Yes it does. The deer needs to put its hoof print on paper in front of a notary.
  20. I guess as a bow guy you figured you'd reach out and tap the deer on it's head with a long barrel like that before you shot it. Kind of like asking it, "hey yo deer, are you ready to let me shoot you?". Since many here are AR/QDM guys who only shoot specific deer of a certain age or size, we might as well go one step further and start asking permission from the deer before we open fire. LOL
  21. I think an 06 with a 22 inch barrel is as perfect for deer as anyone would need. These days a number of makers are using 24 inch barrels on non-magnum calibers like the 06 and 26 inch barrels on magnum calibers which are just too darned long in my opinion. The little extra speed that you would get from the longer barrels makes ZERO difference on game at any range anyone should be shooting at.
  22. I have a suspicion that Friday and Saturday may just turn out to be the best two days hunting of this entire gun season. Calm winds at last on Saturday and snow and ice is expected for Sunday, so just maybe those deer will finally move.
  23. Are you going to shoot it or sleep with it...lol Well you know Culver, if you think of guns as women that could be trouble. Guns are alot like women though, some are made for hard work and some are nice to look at. The key is to find a balance between the two, one that looks nice and shots well...wait am I talking about women or guns I forget? Either way I prefer something that is easy on the eye's especially if I am plan on keeping it around for awhile. Good analogy, Doe. I swear there are guys out there who would rather be sleeping with their guns instead of their wives or girlfriends. Talk about oils and lubricants. Maybe with the right combination of the stuff they might be able to.
  24. Burt, Culver and I actually don't know if our 11-87's would cycle the third shot or not because we have always bagged something with the first or second shots. LOL Just kidding there! Steve on the third shot we already have two dead ducks and were lookin' for the third to drop as well!! ;D Yeah, the Remington's have a game killing sensor built into them to prevent game overkill. It knows that you killed two ducks with the first two shots, so it malfunctions on the third shot all in the name of game conservation. Do the $1200 Beretta's or Benelli's have such a smart feature?? I don't think so.
