  1. OK, so lets say that this was during gun season where he didn't have a doe tag. What does one do then? Who here would be brave enough to admit that he would shoot her just to put her out of her misery without a valid tag?? To get a replacement tag one would have to gut her and drag her out and then go find a DEC officer. I honestly don't think many guys are going to do that on animal they know is sick and they won't be eating.
  2. Looks like these deer search guys will have their work cut out for them just from the small sample on this site. I agree with what Geno said that it seems like some people are not giving the deer enough time. I just don't think any of us should start thinking that these deer search people will be our saviors if WE are the ones making basic mistakes while hunting.
  3. Sorry to hear about your situation. I don't think there is anything wrong with your bow or broadheads, it's just that shooting at game is a whole DIFFERENT ballgame than shooting at targets. That is why I have always been a bit hesitant about bowhunting. Deer can move quite a bit after the hunter releases an arrow which could make a perfect aim and hold into something different once the arrow connects in a different spot. I guess there isn't much that could be done other than keep shots as close as possible to try to minimize these kind of situations. I for one feel WAY more confident sending a bullet towards a deer than I do an arrow, that is for darned sure!
  4. Looking forward to it is one thing but as someone suggested in another thread to take sleeping pills because one can't sleep in anticipation is another in my book. If they told me I needed brain surgery I think I would prefer a doctor who is the "cool hand luke" type where he doesn't get excited very easily over anything. If he was losing sleep the night before over the surgery he was about to perform on me the next morning I think I'd be more than a bit worried!
  5. Some of you guys need to relax. If you are so wound up you will probably screw up if and when an opportunity presents itself. I can tell a lot of you are very young. I think I used to be a bit that way also. These days I don't lose a wink of sleep over anything pertaining to hunting. A lot more important things to worry about in life. I think about hunting less than ever yet my success has gotten better than ever! The less one stresses over it the better the outcome will be in my opinion.
  6. I love your "ease on the brain" expression here!! I'm sure the scent spray manufacturers wished that more of us had this syndrome so that they could sell more of it!
  7. I see mighty little deer movement on windy days. I have a hunch it won't be a great hunting day tomorrow.
  8. None for me. I hunt mostly with gun but never felt the need for any of this stuff. Last year I walked up to within 15 feet of the buck I shot so one can get close without it. Those deer that DO get to come close probably would have with or without us being sprayed down with this stuff. Blind luck probably has more to do with it than anything else!
  9. Edelman's closed more than 10 year ago didn't it? I think it's probably been closer to 20 years. I think they were already closed in the early 90's. I still have a box of old shotshells with their price sticker on it.
  10. I knew you wouldn't be able to resist Doe! I was figuring you would maybe hold off until 3:15 PM. You made me proud by clocking in at 3:09 PM with your response!!
  11. Probably not. My wife usually tells me to keep it down because the kids might hear us.
  12. Yes, thanks for the article. Now, I would like to know why anyone would use a strap on stand over a ladder stand? Are they cheaper? If used in combination with those strap on steps I am sure they probably cost just the same. Maybe they would be a bit easier to bring into the woods and set up, but if they will possibly lead to me to breaking my neck I will surely take the extra time to set up a ladder stand or anything else that will be safer. A no brainer there in my opinion!
  13. I'd be very surprised if such a service was available on Long Island. With people hunting small parcels of land, how could they trail if the deer went onto someone elses property?? I wonder how they even do it upstate? They need permission from landowners first don't they? In many instances I can see the deer being eaten by coyotes way before permission gets granted.
  14. Please do. I like to try different venison recipes.
  15. I would wonder about putting venison in salt water? Wouldn't you be salting it to death by doing this? I myself don't think there is such a thing as gamey taste, it's just that venison is a different meat than beef, pork, etc. and that gamey taste is just a DIFFERENT taste from the other meats.
  16. I tell you Culver, when I hear people talk about shooting at 400 yards or more it really makes me cringe. I know there are more open places out west where one CAN see an animal at long distances, but shooting at such distances is really risky. I don't care how much someone practices either. Wind can really play havoc with a bullet and just because the wind is doing one thing around the shooter, don't mean it isn't doing something else 500 yards down range. Even 250 yards is a very long shot for the majority of shooters. I don't care what super duper caliber these long range gunners shoot either. Shooting at such distances is a crap shoot. I love it when the post videos of themselves making a kill at unbelievable ranges. Yeah, right. How many misses did they have before they made such a kill? I'm sure most of them make a dozen or more misses before they ever make one kill at such distances!!
  17. Agreed. He could have decided by going the eenie meenie minie mo route and still made the right choice with either caliber!!
  18. I told you a big kid like that would have no problem with a .270 or .30-06. I think the Savage is a great choice. Probably the most accurate production rifle made today. I have hunted with a .270 for 25 years and can't find any reason for another deer rifle.
  19. Have never been impressed with American Outdoor Sports either. Can't say anything about their archery section since I never bought anything there, but definitely a couple of clowns working behind the gun counter who seem to care less about you. I have bought a couple of guns there dating back to the late 80's and the last one about 10 years ago, but if I were to buy any others it surely won't be from their store. I think I'd rather drive up to Gander in Kingston or Cabelas in CT for a better deal with less attitude from the sales guy.
  20. They moved. I think they are somewhere in Babylon now.
  21. Ok thats a great start, I will be expecting the check in the mail. Just don't expect a check from Doc, he is a self admitted tightwad.
  22. How much of a problem can feral cats be? I find it hard to believe that they could be destroying too much of anything. Heck, coyotes are snatching cats and dogs from suburban backyards, I doubt feral cats have a very long lifespan in the wild. Maybe they get a chipmunk for breakfast and lunch and then they become dinner for coyotes.
  23. It looks like Casper the friendly ghost to me.
  24. He's probably right, he probably can't do any worse! Just from that short clip he sure looks more trustworthy than either Cuomo or Pallidino, that's for darn sure!!
