Wearing camo and being a hunter or wearing a NRA hat is nothing to be ashamed of. It is something we should all be doing. I will never hide the fact that I'm a hunter. Even in the off season people will know that I'm a hunter. If they are Antis all they have to do is keep away. If they are non hunters many of them are curious and some will actually start talking to you asking questions about what you love to do. Many people are just unimformed about what we do and the reasons why we do it. I wear camo clothing to the airport during the hunting season just cause its that time of year and I'm excited. I dont hide the fact that I'm a hunter, I tell people I'm a Hunter!

2010 Deer Harvest Thread - Post your Pics and Success Stories!
Fairgame replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Deer Hunting
Nice going! 2 down and the season just started for you. Nice job. -
Where the 97 and 116 is where I am. Crazy!
-
Never, It would be crazy to see one though. Alot of woods for them to hide in
-
Nice going! Same with the deer in north carolina, the deer taste better cause of all the soybeans and peanuts they eat.
-
Great start on the early start!!! Congrats

One buck for the entire deer season is fine but one doe is sometimes not enough in some areas. The deer habitat would get destroyed in a couple of years due to overpopulation. Dmps will always have to be in place just to keep control. Longer season, I dont think its needed we already have a long season.

Where's the deer? (All bear pics)
Fairgame replied to Windsorhunter's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
I dont know but last year I saw alot of bear during the bow season and alot of deer. Never at the same time though. If I would see a bear in the early afternoon I wouldnt see a deer for the rest of the day. -
I always do, Thanks. I sometimes still feel like I live there from how many times a year I'm there. Good luck to you too!!

there are some farms but not very many. The deer seem healthy enough from the ones I have harvested. I shot a nice eight last year during bow ( probably 100 inches) We weighed him in our garage dressed at 185. Was he 2 1/2, 3 1/2, I dont know but a good body on him. The seven pointer during rifle season a few years ago was bigger than the eight I shot but at the time I didnt have a scale to weigh him. Yes, almost everyone that owns land in that area is from the 5 boroughs or long island My two immediate neighbors are from manhattan. My dad is from long island I am now in California but I fly in just about every weekend during the hunting season. Sometimes stay for 2-3 weeks go home for a few days to see the wife and then leave again, just to get as much time in as possible. This is what I have to do until I move back. (oneday, hopefully in the next year) Hunting in southern Cailfornia sucks mainly cause I mostly have to do it by myself and its dangerous.

I have never hunted any of the central or western NY for deer. For years before ARs we use to put out trail cameras and never see any bucks on it except for the yearling buck. I cant say that anymore. Being just about elbow to elbow with your next door neighbor hunting in these areas was not giving any of these bucks a chance to grow. The preasure is high and nowhere for these animals to go except in front of a hunter. Good cause you would see deer running around but bad in the sense that a buck honestly had almost no chance to make it to an older age. I would love to oneday have the opportunity to see what its like in other parts of the state like western or northern NY, but being that my dad is my hunting partner and we are always together during the hunting season I choose for now to stay at my own place to keep my dad around hunting with me. Thats more important to me than anything else. Since we have our own place he doesnt feel the need to hunt anywhere but our place and as long as he is around I stick with him. My dad has been waiting for the right opportunity at a nice buck for 3 years and refuses to shoot anything that is small cause he sees the possibility and I hope this year is the year for him cause some nice bucks are definitly around this year from what we can see on our trail cameras. He is waiting for a rack buck and it would be his first in all these years of hunting.

Alot of hunting preasure and very little farmland if any. It is all private land divided into small lots from 5 to 200 acres and of course sometimes more but not very many large tracks. Many of the lots are on the smaller side being 30 acres or less. Most of the people that own land in the area i'm in live somewhere else and use their property only for recreational purposes like hunting and fishing. With all the hunters in the woods it seemed like the only bucks surviving were the button bucks. It was really horrible. The chances of seeing any type of rack was almost impossible. This has honeslty changed now. We are seeing alot of yearling bucks now plus some nice racked deer. The opportunity to actually harvest a legal buck has definitly increased in my eyes. Before ARs were in the area I would get mad for being denied a dmp cause my chances of getting deer was cut dramatically. Now I could care less. Whether its bow rifle or muzzleloader chances of harvesting have definitely increased.

They will warn all deer around them by stomping and blowing then go back the same way they came cause that is probably the safest route.
-
From what I see myself doing and others I hunt with. We are passing on the 5 or 6 point yearling by choice whether we get anything or not. Just knowing that the bigger ones are now there I take my chances. Could that be the reason Maybee but I cant speak for everyone. Then again It could also be less reported deer who knows. All I know is I have definitely had more opportunity to legally harvest more deer than ever before but choose to hold out for an older buck
-
Its a perfect answer for the people that live in the area where big bucks live or get to be older where you can make a choice in doing as you please and dont need any type of regulation. Its not true that there are big bucks everywhere. It would be great to have no regulations and have all hunters satisfied, but thats not where we are in all parts of this state. The DEC has put themselves in a hole With not having enough money for anything and it will be less and less every year because of their great Idea of lifetime licenses and higher license cost. ARs are not the ones limiting hunters on hunting its the dec and their way of pushing more and more hunters out of this thing we all love to do. selling lifetime licences and raising license cost are going to kill them in their revenues if they dont change things now. For alot people antlers is what its about, its the reason they probably want to hunt, nothing wrong with it. I would much rather shoot a nice buck on my own land than have to go out of state to accomplish this. There are no guarantees in hunting but would be nice to atleast know that I have the opportunity on my own land. Then lets not paint the entire state and say that there are big bucks everywhere

Very nice NYantler

What you see is what you'll get. On the internet or face to face. I say it as it is whether people like it or not. No the point is don't type something you wouldn't say if we were face to face. Now, go study your math like a good girl.
-
What kind of remark were you looking for? A smiley face?
-
Regulations are the reason we all have the opportunity to hunt. Because we live in a free country doesnt mean we arent supposed to have regulations.
-
You know from what I have written in the past that I dont need a guaranteed buck every year. Its about knowing you have the opportunity at one or knowing that you have decent bucks in the area that can eventually walk past you. If hunters know that the biggest buck they will probably shoot is 1 1/2 and a 1 1/2 year old walks in front of them they will shoot it. But if they know they have from 1 1/2 and older in the area the chances are that they will hold out if the younger buck walks in front of them. Only because they know that the opportunity is there at an older buck.
-
Same goes for you. DOEWACKER! If you dont like it step off
-
Steve863, How is the person who is waiting for a decent buck in an area that doesnt really hold any decent bucks cause they were shot out for the most part at 1 1/2 going to get one. How is that fair to them?

First time hunter looking for some advice and pointers
Fairgame replied to Bird Turglar's topic in General Chit Chat
If you know anyone that hunts I believe thats the best way to really learn. Go hunting with them even if your not the one doing the hunting its a good way to learn the whole process once it all happens. BTW, there is nothing wrong with buying your stuff at walmart. If it keeps you safe warm and protected its all good -
??? : I didnt say it!!
