Anyone have a snowmobile?
5.9cummins replied to burmjohn's topic in ATV's , UTV's, Dirtbikes & Snowmobiles
I got to disagree with ya on this. The only place that i know of in the east or mid-west that can rival the snow fall total for the tug hill or Chautauqua county area is the UP of Michigan. I know nothing about Maine but my brother in-law who lives in the mid west would only go to two places to ride NY or the UP. I cant find any decent snowfall total maps nation wide but then again the majority of them don't break 100 inches . I used to have two Ski doos. A formula SLS 500 and a MXZ 670 (piped, clutched, reeds, studded, the works). In the wide open the MXZ was something to be feared but get in the woods and i would take the SLS any day. That thing was a animal out of the hole. But i sold all my toys (except hunting stuff) after i got married. I shudder to think what it would cost now with the price of gas. -
I will second that. Had a decent buck run in front of the truck at 11 today.

Not my intended target but still good eatin (all two sandwiches). Link

11-7-11 Went back to the farm this morning as it is in the unit i have a DMP for plus farmer has some DMAP's. Saw a small 4 point by the road on the way in. Got in a little late but wasn't sure where i would end up anyway. I thought about hunting one stand but decided to still hunt through the pines. About a hour into it i spotted a deer 300+ yards off on the next hill about 60 yards from the stand i was thinking of hunting and heading toward it, i guess that's the way the cookie crumbles. I still hunted through the bottom and up toward that stand. Came around the corner on some of the pines and caught some movement about 15 yards away in the hedge (two grouse). Knocked a small game head and started looking for an opening. The female was all skidish but the male looked like he could care less that i was there. Then had a third female pop up on a branch in front of the male to get a better look (wasn't the smartest thing she ever did and it was her last). Ended up calling it quits and packed it in about 10:30. Driving the seasonal road around the back side of the property had a nice 3 1/2 year old eight jump right in front of the truck. Stopped in the middle of the road and looked at me and took a couple steps into the woods and we watched each other for a while at about 20 yards. 15-16 inch spread with 8 inch tines.

Plus its the rut - hes getting goofy looking for a girl friend. If i still had my buck tag i would be sitting all day every chance i could get right now. The big ones are on-the move. Several guys so far on here are starting to report the big boys moving during the 10 till 2 window. and like hillbilly said. They don't get big by being stupid (at least outside the rut).

I don't know about the amount of build up but the majority of seed is treated with some nasty stuff. Fungicide and or Insecticide. Many of which effect insects the same as they would mammals (only you need a higher does). Many of those compounds accumulate in fatty tissue. Most stuff (beans, wheat, corn) are treated with Raxil, Thiram, Storcicide, Cruiser and some others. High cost seed (veg seed) including stuff like black, pinto, red beans, cabbage, squash etc. etc. can have 6-7-8 or more compounds on it. You so much as open a bag of that seed and it can make you start hacking. I am not aware of any studies relating to this although i am sure there have been some done. The majority of treated seed with grazing restrictions (if there is one) says to not allow grazing for a month after planting. If too much is consumed it could be lethal to the animal. I have seen it with Rats and Mice.

Correction 11-4 is the above entry. 11-5-11 Hunted a hill top funnel stand tonight. Sat for about 3 hours in a big white pine with a 10 mph south wind. Bad choice of stands for tonight. Didn't see a thing plus it was cold. As soon as you dropped off the hill or even to the bottom of the tree the wind was minimal to non existent. I am starting to think that the 4 wheeler traffic has FUBR'ed the farm.

LOL I work with a couple of guys that used to be corrections. Reading this brings back some stories i have been told. Nuts and Butts. Good luck man.

I like it but only during certain situations. One farm i hunt is a tree farm and i will stalk the rows of trees like a corn field. Poke your head out and look through the rows and move up and repeat. I also like to still hunt down a stream bed. Its not deep so knee boots are more than enough but you can move really quite. Quite being key. I don't do much still hunting unless there is snow on the ground or its wet. I tend to focus on the trees and streams because you can hunt them any time and for the most part its quite. Last year i followed a group of three doe through the trees for 250+ yards and just could not get in front of them for a shot. I also came up on a small basket six going down a stream bed. Gave me a couple shots to drop him but i passed. About 100 yards latter i jumped a really nice buck out of his bed (under 30 yards). He bedded up under a hemlock and i could not see him. I am still kicking myself over that one because i had decided to call it quits and stepped up onto the bank. Had i kept in the stream and gone another couple yards i would have been able to see under the tree

VIDEO: Deer Heart Blown Up And Blood Is Everywhere!
5.9cummins replied to TheFieldArcher's topic in Deer Hunting
I literally just watched this on AT and come over to this site and its the top thread LOL. Nice camera work by the way. -
11-5-11 Took my daughter up on the hill to see if anything would come into the food plot. About 45 degrees with a 5-7mph NW wind. Sat for about an hour and a half and didn't see anything. Guess one and a half hours is to much for my hunting buddy to take. Out like a light after 30 minutes.

I use a 1200 grit diamond stone followed by some sharpening compound (you could shave with my broad-heads).

Just like Jeff Folies

+2 on the milk weed pods. Perfect example was the last Sunday when i was hunting in the x-mas trees. I thought the wind was completely in the wrong direction and i was really worried being on the ground. I let a couple of those suckers go and they went about five feet and then straight up over the tree tops. Powder would have only told me i was in the wrong spot. I kept throwing those out every couple of minutes to double check. I grabbed about 30-40 pods last year and have them in a coffee can. That way i don't think about using them i just throw a bunch out and let them go. I check the wind constantly.

Interesting.

I already ate but i feel hungry. Definitely going to try this.
-
Not necessarily. I shot one on Sunday and found him bedded within 120 yards from where i hit him. Still very much alive. He will go for cover and hold up.
-
Stomach - give him till morning and start looking from the last place you saw him. Give deer search a call before you start to see if they could assist. I called the morning of when i was looking for mine and it took them two days before they were able to return my call = they are busy right now.
-
That's what i was thinking. A broad-head thread that is civil, this does not feel right.
-
I shot my first deer with a bear broad-head. Then i got a new bow and jumped on the mechanical band wagon for a while (spitfires) and shot two deer with them. A big 7pt and a big doe - neither were pass troughs so back to fixed blade i went. I have shot razorbacks which were decent but i have had them disintegrate against a shoulder. I have been using slick tricks which i like and i would buy again. For now i am going back to these little guys because i found 8 of them in my old gear.

11-3-11 Well i am supposed to be on vacation this week and next for hunting but due to the house selling i find i haven't gotten out much due to packing and some work issues. I have been scratching my head as to what i was going to do for broad-heads due to missing a couple shots and loosing arrows and heads. I don't really want to drop a lot of money on heads either. Well i was packing up some of my hunting gear today and forgot all about these. So for the foreseeable future i will be going Old School. Heads are 10 years older than i am. Dropped my first ever deer with one of these out of a White Tail 2.
