  1. I passed a field in Eastern Long Island yesterday afternoon with about 30 deer in it.
  2. I never have a problem with getting cold- except for my toes. I have good boots and wear good socks. But, when the temperatures are in the teens and twenties, after a few hours in a treestand, my toes get cold. I was thinking about getting a pair of pac boots for next season. But, the reviews that I'm reading often say that even these type of boots lack enough insulation in the toes. Now, I'm thinking I might just get another pair of good boots, but in a size and a half bigger to allow me to wear an extra layer of the best socks I can find. Anyone have similar issue and experience?
  3. 25 posts on this thread- 17 of them from the same guy. These silly threads would go away a lot quicker if we all just laughed privately and resisted the urge to type.
  4. Carbon- what are you talking about? Do you envision ISIS invading this country? If so, do you believe that the first and only defense against them would be you and your hunting buddies?
  5. That's a good point. I was thinking that I might be able to just use the unit as a cold-smoker if I added an electric element to produce smoke. My problem has been that the temperature gets way too high, and then the coals burn down and I get too little smoke. I don't want to babysit a smoker all day. It's a shame- my wife bought it for me as a gift and it wasn't cheap. I just haven't been able to use it properly. I may have to bite the bullet and switch to an electric unit.
  6. I don't want to hijack this thread. But, I have a question for you guys who have more experience with smokers. I have a weber smoker that I got as a gift last year. I've used it a few times and have not been very happy with the results. It's a coal-fired smoker. My problem has been not being able to keep the temperature at consistent levels. Was wondering if I can simply convert it to electric by buying an electric smoker element. Has anyone done this?
  7. Nobody questions whether or not the group exists. What has never been proven is any of the claims about the group in the article you posted.
  8. I'm gonna hold off on panicking until Papist confirms the authenticity of this story.
  9. was wondering the same thing. i looked at the website and the most recent reference to AR's was in 2009.
  10. We went out of Point Lookout yesterday. There were plenty of brant there. But, they were holding tight in huge rafts of a few hundred birds. When birds did get up to fly, they seemed like they were more interested in landing with the other huge groups of birds than checking out our rig of a dozen dekes. We did manage to get four brant, a black, a drake mallard, and one goose between the three of us.
  11. You are an elitist because you are suggesting that there might be things that we could do differently, possibly for the betterment of the sport and the environment. How dare you. For some, any suggestion of a change is an afront to their sense of independence; and they are likely to resist without actually listening to what's being suggested.
  12. There was no apology tour. Just an attempt at a thoughtful discussion.
  13. I don't think anyone is debating the legality. The question is about the perception of the contests by the uninformed and whether that perception is damaging to the public image of hunting. It's a perfectly reasonable question.
  14. I think the point of the question is not the contests' impact on game populations, but the impact of the contests amongst the non-hunting public. Non-hunters or anti-hunters may think that it sounds gratuitous and un-sporting and may see the participants as killing animals more for the purpose of winning the contest than controlling populations.
  15. Curmudgeon, you'll find that any suggestion that we as hunters re-consider anything that we've always done, is typically met with this type of reaction.
  16. I don't mean any disrespect. But, those prices seem very low for all the time and effort involved. Is their any profit in trapping?
  17. I have a set of three. I've never felt the need to be super-high up in a tree. So, three has been fine for me.
  18. I have a set of Lone Wolf sticks and I love them. They set up quiet and easy and it sure beats carrying and setting up a noisy and heavy climber. They're a little awkward to carry into the woods- I bungee cord them together and then either carry them or strap them to my backpack.
  19. That's what I thought. Thanks for the clarification.
  20. Earlier in this thread, there was a question about how many bucks could be taken. I think WNY stated that you could take one buck in either early bow OR muzzleloader. Is that for sure? I can't find that info on the DEC website. I took a buck during bow, but not during the regular season. I was under the impression that I could take a buck during ML. I don't have my license with me to look at the tags. Was wondering if anyone could post a link to the accurate info. thanks.
  21. I think you guys are overanalyzing the 'accompanied by' part of that line. I would imagine that it's intended to mean that you cannot be hunting together, as in sitting in a blind together or as in a mentor/youth situation.
  22. i have some of the windshear stuff- a pullover fleece. i wear it as an outer layer for most of the season, and then under my parka when it's really cold. It's a great fleece, very warm and does stop the wind.
  23. I passed Bear Spring on my way to my place Friday morning around 10:30. I passed a group of guys on the road. There were six of them. I assumed they had just done drive or were getting ready for one. I was wondering if it was a group from this site.
