One way or the other the meat has to get processed
Fletch replied to Rockspek's topic in Deer Processing
I feel everyone who shoots and eats deer should at least do it a couple times. You should have that experience and it helps you understand what you should be seeing if someone does one for you. In the old days we cut them all up ourselves. I remember packaging venison well before I hit double digits in age. I have done a couple by myself and it takes me a long ass time compared to someone who does it a lot. With all the other things I have going on and I would rather be hunting so I take them to the butcher. But I would only do this if you have a kick ass butcher. Too many hacks out there. Oh and boneless is the ONLY way to go. -
Unfortunately I did not have extra to can this year. I usually can a couple batches and it is some of the best eating there is. I cold pack as well and salt and mostly pints as well. I warm up with a can of mushroom gravy and some mushrooms and serve over noodles.

Buck weight (field dressed) - what's a "big one" in NY
Fletch replied to buckchaser's topic in Deer Hunting
We use a scale on all our deer. It is not an expensive one and we calibrate it before and after to make sure the readings are pretty accurate. I like to figure out what age classes average in the areas we hunt. How the averages change over time and what may be the cause......It also makes you a lot better judge of what deer weigh by looking at them. And you can figure out what you should yield in meat. -
Super, good luck to him and you!!

Middletown Gander Mountain Gift Card Scam
Fletch replied to ELMER J. FUDD's topic in General Chit Chat
Core I am thinking the same thing. This would be a super easy way to get caught for the clerk. They know exactly who did the transaction. I ALWAYS make sure to watch the register and I hate /avoid stores where I can not see each price. I also check my receipt before I leave the store. -

My son and I got a real short trip out up in the Cedar River Flow this weekend to scout out a possible tent camp for deer. Soccer really limited our choices so we left Sat afternoon and drove 3+ hours, canoed maybe 2 miles. We have never been here so I had a primitive site in mind off the map that we located and set up camp in a light rain. It was not much of a site but we were low on time and unfamiliar with the area. It did stop to enjoy dinner and a fire for a while. We hit the sack and it rained all night. It let up in the am and the woods around the site were just too thick. We decided to eat, pack up and explore. A ways down we found a perfect site on a point and hiked/ scouted for a couple hours and saw some nice country. We then canoed explored some more before heading out. I think we canoed 4-5 miles. homemade smoked Canadian bacon and eggs Bald Eagle Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The season is rushing up on us. This summer has been so hot I am behind on my "to do" list but looking at the weather coming up I will be doing it mid day during October when it's 80 out. The plan this season is to get one early for me and stay away from the southern half of my property which I am saving for my sons' first deer hunts on youth weekend and then he will hunt crossbow last two weeks of bow. I want him to get some experience with those first before he goes compound. I am really excited he is old enough to deer hunt! Right now it looks like I may have lost my neighbors property which really hurts. So my season may end up a bit more public this year. And the look for a lease or land moved up a notch. I've got no special hunts planned. I did not draw Vermont moose yet and we have been collecting preference points to do the GA gator hunt next year.

I use a backpack most of the time since I stand hunt most of the time. I like some others don't need my pockets all jammed with stuff. Plus I strap to it layers walking in to stand, drink, connect strap, snacks, binocs, scents, folding saw, drag strap, rattling equip........... I am a big Badlands fan. They are expensive but a 100% lifetime guarantee does it for me.

Fletch replied to buckchaser's topic in Deer Hunting
Up in the Dack's 200 is the bench mark for a Big buck. I have seen a few scaled in the 200-215 range and one in the 230s. Personally myself the biggest was 186 dressed weighed by the DEC shot in bow season SZ near Syracuse. The thing that struck me was how tall that buck was. Also barely any fat he was shot the day before gun. Back then you had to get a new tag in person so I missed opening day Monday morning downtown at the DEC office getting a new tag. -

I usually have them all cleaned out by now. Need to clean out all the sticks that fall over the year so I can ease in the dark quietly. During season I may now the one trail be find the house to some stands mid day when it's 80 out. I do that a few times year around and no issues. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
