  1. I smoked for 20 years and killed many deer while smoking. I have not smoked in 5 or 6 years now and I still shoot a lot of deer. I imagine it matters where you hunt. If you are way out where deer do not smell hundreds or thousands of odd man made scents all the time it may matter a lot. If you hunt where there are roads, houses, businesses.... Not far way I think deer rely less on some scents to alarm them. Crap they gotta smell human scents all day long every day in some suburb spots I hunt. I also chewed for a couple years and that did not seem to show any change in my sightings either. Quit that as well months. Now that said I would not pay 8000 dollars to go out to New Mexico to hunt elk and light up. If I was hunting deer out behind a housing development sure.
  2. I would of been hot too!! Turned out better than you thought it was going to.
  3. I enjoyed reading that Zem! My dad is 74 and it has been quite a lot of years since he has taken a deer. He only gets out with us maybe a half dozen times in the season. He missed one about a week and a half ago behind my place. It was a long shot, 100 yards, so we cut him some slack but my younger brother and I finally convinced him to let us get him a scope instead of the red dot he uses. I would love for him to be able to get one more deer, maybe next year. Good luck out there!
  4. 12/14 pm Got out for a short sit down in the hole stand. Nothin going on and nothing seen.
  5. Thank you! Out this evening for just a bit behind the house. Heard something running around up the hill before dark but never saw anything.
  6. A couple big factors in answering your question. Was the deer recovered quick and gutted proper? Was the deer cooled down rather quick? When hanging was it out in sun or in a shed? I have no problem letting a deer hang for a few days if it was clean gutted, cooled quick and kept at 35 to 40 degrees? It can even hit 50 outside and a deer hanging in the shade in a shed will not be in trouble. There is no bonus to hanging though unless you do it for 10 plus days in proper conditions. Meat will not age in less time.
  7. I will, as long as we get some mild days. My son wants to get out bad. Soon as ML season is over.
  8. 10/11 Out in Tully again. Man it was cold this morning, 17 degrees when I pulled in the lot. sat in my climber for the first 3 hours. I had like 7 chemical warmers going and like 3 layers of clothes on and a thermos of hot coffee so I was pretty comphy!! We had a bite then did a drive? I actual was on watch the first half of one and missed a big running yore. Then I put up a herd that slipped out an uncovered spot on us. My BIL did have 2 come towards him but he got busted moving and no shot. back in climber for last 2 hours and no luck.
  9. 12/10 pm Got out for the last 3 hours in Tully. My BIL and his buddy were out as well. I did not see anything. My BIL buddy missed a doe.
  10. I have never had too much luck with extra movement and a second rut. But this years first rut was so weak I would love to be a believer!!!
  11. I responded back in Oct to this thread that we usually have quite a few yokes around. I had to add though after hunting almost two straight months I have not seen one this year. I always see at least a couple during the season. I know there are some because I hear them at night and have some cam picks. Just unusual not to see one all season while deer hunting.
  12. I hear them quite often as well. Everyone is always liken what the heck is that!!!
  13. I bought one this year since I wanted to take my son out with me more. The blind was my solution to cover his moving. I believe it needs to be put out weeks in advance for deer hunting. I feel blind in the blind! Lol even though it has windows all around I just feel funny. I did not hunt out of it much and never alone when I had the option to be in a tree where I felt more confident. I will try to use it more next year. I just need to get confidence I guess. 3 things to consider. Try fitting in it and drawing a bow before you buy it. buy it well before you use it. it has a slight smell you want to set up in yard and air out. I also waterproofed mine. I would be wary of any place on public land or that has trespassers because you can not really lock it up.
  14. I am not an all day sit guy. My ass, back, knees would not forgive me! It all depends on season, temps, movement and other things like work or family. I hunt a lot of days. During the week I will get out before work and or after so my sits are limited in time. On weekends I will sit 2, 3, 4 hours in the am depending on chance for movement. Then take a break and still hunt, or do a drive, or sit a different spot. Then hit a final spot for the last 2 or 3 hours. Or I may have errands to do or just hang and bs with the boys in the middle of the day. I want to enjoy myself I think all dayers would burn me out. Unless you hit those couple days when the bucks are chasing all over. Then I sit as much as possible but still need a break. I did not even see a buck chasing this year!
  15. 12/9 am Out behind the house for a bit. No sightings but squirells. It snowed a bit but is already melting. I got a game to coach at 8am so will get out after that and all Sunday. Hope some snow sticks.
  16. Good luck Zem! I am looking for one more, a good doe or a big buck. Or maybe both!
  17. There should be a warning before that post! Yikes
  18. 12/8 pm Got out for evening watch in the hole stand. Did not see anything. Will try again in the am. Got lazy for a couple days!
  19. It is from a game cam in Texas. It was on a magazine website. Pretty wild stuff. It is actually a series of like 200 pictures. My comp blew up today but if nobody posts the magazine tag. I will when I get my comp fixed next week.
  20. I hunt 7a, 7f and 7m the most. I have not come across any starved deer or even skinny ones besides run out post rut bucks. There seems to be a good number of deer on private land in this area and the public land gets pretty cleaned out. Non hunting places for example Green Lakes State Park have extremely noticeable over browsing. The zones contain too many different areas and are too big to manage correctly for the whole area. Once the guns start deer know where to go that hunters can not.
  21. I do not think it is the same deer. But I know the guy so if you tell me what public spot I can confirm or deny.
  22. Yes from my understanding they just need to be accompanied by a adult with 3 years or more experience bow hunting and licensed..
  23. Congratz!! The pic of the huge deer is an old one I believe it was a fenced preserve deer. And not in NY.
  24. I have no problem with it myself. I think a TV, stove.. is a bit over the top and would hinder my experience but to each their own. I am planning on building a box tower this summer on my property so my son who is 9 can hunt with me and be safe, protected from the elements, so he enjoys it and can stay out longer. As well as to cover up his movements cause well he is a kid!! Now that brings up a question. The new NYS laws on bowhunters the age of 12 and 13 yr. old bow hunter can hunt from an elevated stand but a 14 or 15 year old can not hunt with a gun in an elevated stand? That makes no sense!!
