  1. Ok I owe some back time. 11/23 just got out for one watch and had a zero 11/24 Hunted the hole and my BIL hunted behind the inlaws on the point. We saw zip. After that we did a drive behind the inlaws. We were short one man my Bro stood us up but we decided to try anyway. Well we put up a good sized deer I just could not get a shot at it. If we had a third it would have been shooting anyway. 11/25 Hit Tully all day with my cousin, uncle, brother and Dad. My cousin saw a couple little ones in the am. My uncle and I jumped two no shots. My brother saw four on pm watch no shot at an adult. 11/26 Tully with Uncle, cousin and brother. We all got skunked but my brother who saw one like 200 yards away. 11/27 Hunted behind the house with my Dad. He missed a long shot at a deer around 9am. They came down to me a spike and a 4 point. I was tempted with the status of my freezer but I passed them at 40 yards. 11/28 pm got out behind the house for 1.5 and jumped one on the way out. As usual gun season and it is tough. I saw a doozie at the butcher last night. 140 plus inch 10 point just mass.
  2. It is great for sure. After a few days of getting up at four am to drive an hour south to hunt. You realize how nice it is to sleep an extra hour and twenty minutes to hunt out the back door. I only have 12 acres but my neighbor has 20 or so I can hunt. The whole block I would guess is 600 to 800 acres. So a lot of woods and connected to a lot more just crossing any road. I bow hunt it pretty good and we usually get one or two deer every year "out back". I have another spot I post for a friend that is 6 miles away of about 40 acres out of a 150 acre section. And a couple thousand acres of overhunted pheasant managed state land less than 2 mile away.
  3. Too much moving stands old man. That is what you have kids for!!!
  4. Sounds like a super weekend to me!! Get that pic up!!
  5. 11/22 am 21 d Man it was chillllly this morning. Got out on the point behind the inlaws for 2 hours in my climber. Absolutely nadda.
  6. 11/21 33 am 37 pm Hunted behind the house for 2.5 hours this morning. My Dad also got out. I saw one small deer at 90 yards or so just after legal. I would guess he is the button I have seen a few times. We went back out after coffee for another 1.5 and nothing. I went over to the hole for 2.5 hours in the evening. I really had a good feeling but that did not pan out! Got to work the next two days so I will try to sneak out in the morning to watch some more trees!
  7. Nice buck congratz to your Dad. What did he weigh and it will be easier to guess his age. But I would say 3.5 is not a bad guess.
  8. Ok, I get use a new trash can but you should be able to reuse it for just this right? Not really practical buying new can every turkey!! Get a smoker!
  9. In 7m state land Saturday LOTS of hunters but shooting very low. Sunday hunters fair amount first half of the day and I think more shooting than Saturday. Heard of a lot of nice bucks seen but not taken. My brother Saturday night saw a 10 , 9 and a 6 or 8 on last watch. And Another in my party saw a nice buck he missed. My butcher in 7f is very busy so somebody is killing a lot of deer! Oh and just for the record quietest not even close here. Last year 30 mile an hour winds. the year before torrential rain. 2 years before that an ice storm. Those were poor opening days!!
  10. Congratz to your son! Did he shoot it with the pistol?
  11. 11/19 and 11/20 Well we hunted the usual state land in Tully. 5 of us Saturday and 4 of us Sunday. My BIL Saw one button in two days on stand. I saw 0 on stand and a couple jumped walking no shots. My Dad just hunted opening morning and saw 0. Now the other two a buddy saw 3 on Sat no shots and 7 on Sunday, missed a doe and missed a good buck we put out on a drive. My brother saw 1 to far out Sat morn, then 10 on evening watch. Got one small doe. Had a 10 point at 30 yards he could not shoot because it was in the brush. Had anothe 6 or 8 pointer come in after he shot the doe and was not positive the doe was not a spike ao had to pass. Then had a 9 come in at dark. Sunday he saw 4 on first watch but no shots. There were a lot of hunters out Saturday but shooting was not a lot. Sunday there was quite a bit of shooting. Lots of people seeing deer. I was wearing deer Kryptonite all weekend to keep them away!! I did see a nice 10 point and 7 other deer driving to hunting Saturday before light. The 10 point was 5 miles from my house standing on the side of the road right in front of the land I have posted where the hole stand is. So I drive an hour away to hunt!! lol Back at em tomorrow have the day off.
  12. Only once had a miscue. I won't call it an accident because I was following my training and all turned out well besides some soiled britches. I was still a teen and hunting up north in the Adirondacks with my grandfather. I was using my Dads old 35 lever action and was behind the truck loading it before heading in. Well when you chamber a round you have to put the mammer back forward as your safety. Well my fingers were cold and it slipped and pow. Scared the shit out of my pop in the truck. But I had the gun pointed out in front of me at the ground a couple feet and away from the vehicle as taught so no harm but pop was still a bit pissed. That never happened again. I have a young son just starting with the BB gun thing so I am constantly going over the gun rules with him as I was when young.
  13. Thank you and you as well!!
  14. Yea I saw a lot of trucks with ATVs rolling mid day Thursday southbound on 81. Nothin like the old days though.
  15. I have quite a few cool encounters. Had a big owl almost get me while sitting in the dark 25 feet up a tree waiting for light. That scared the beep outa me. Have had the luck to see quite a few snow owls and eagles more recently. Had a Coopers Hawk take out a pheasant right in front of me while in my climber. That was super cool. Bam Had a skunk play chicken with me while crossing a stream on a log. He won! Sitting in my climber one opener on state land and had a guy come in and climb a tree 40 feet from me. To late to move as in 10 minutes to sun up. We looked like a couple idiots staring at each other. Had a couple teachers bring a whole van load of kids to hike on opening day on state land. None in safety colors and some in browns!! Flippin antis are loons. Had a guy park next to me one opening morning drove from over an hour away and had his gun lock on and the key was back home. Had a button come up to me while sitting in a swamp and came within an inch of putting his nose on my boot. After what seemed forever I said boo and I think he just about peed himself. Those are more like the neatest not oddest, the oddest would be some of the hunters I have witnessed! Boy some of them are sumptin!
  16. In my Triumph I use 3 pellets of Triple 7 and a 250g TC Shockwave. Sucker is deadly accurate. I do not get flyers but it does shoot better a little dirty.
  17. Good luck out there!! It will be nice to have a calm opener. The last few have been wind or torential downpour, icestorm......
  18. Well here is the final tally for bow season. 77.5 hours in the stand during legal shooting hours. 12 buck and 9 flathead sighting, a few of which were buttons. So my doe sighting is way low. I saw 1 buck every 6.46 hours and 1 any deer in 3.69 hours. As I said before that is a very bad average for me, not really sure why./ I know we have had quite a few roadkills around the land. Not a real lot of yote activity. I did have a successful season though. Best parts were getting in the ground blind with my son. We will do more of that next year as well as getting a reaised box blind built we can hunt out of. And also the taking of my buck which is seven years in a row with a bow kill. I have the laundry going now with the hunting clothes and getting out the gun stuff. Looking forward to getting out tomorrow with the Old Man and my brother and brother in law. Good luck to all you guys and be safe. I want to hear some good stories!!
  19. 11/18 am 34 d SNOW!! First snow on the ground about 3/4 of an inch. And I screw it up!! I am coming down sick so yeterday I was beat and took a dose of niquil and went to bed at 8pm. Well my wife set off the fire alarm at 9 something and woke the bejesis out of me. Auto fire dispatchment. I went back to bed and let her deal with the fire department! So I overslept my alarm by 1.5 hours!! I still got up and was in my stand by 7am legal time but I am usually in 45 minutes before that and I went to a closer stan my permanent one instead of the farther favorite. I only sat an hour and did not see anything. There were a few sets of tracks from the night on the way in and under the stand. All solo so probably bucks cruising. Well that is the end of bow for me this year.
  20. 11/17 pm After my appointment with my oncologist (yea clean 7 years now!!) I headed down to Tully just to give the spot I will be opening day a quick look over to make sure they did not clear cut it or anything. All looked good and I saw some sign so maybe a little luck!! Came back home and got out behind the house in my favorite ladder stand. Had one small buck work by me quite a ways out at about 4:30 or so. Looked like another 4/6 pointer.
  21. 11/17 am Decide to try down in the hole in the am even though I usually use it as a pm sit due to noisy getting in and sightings higher in the evening. It was quiet this am and I thought I might catch some moving. Well no luck at that. Sat for 2.5 and nadda. I did pull my pop up blind from up top on the way out. With gun starting I did not want it to disapear from somebody lost on our property.
  22. Good Luck Zem! I still have tomorrow off to bow hunt as well as Friday morning. Then silly gun season!
