545 People Control America
philoshop replied to Mr VJP's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Very true, and fully understood. I have a sense that the founding fathers somehow knew what the election process was going to be like in the future when they left the SCOTUS out of that process. The citizens were, and are, entrusted with the election of lawmakers deemed most fit to do the job of running the country, thereby entrusting those elected representatives with making wise choices for appointment to the high court of the land. The original concept was well thought out and sound, and would/could/should still work today. I'm not sure where we might find them in this country today, but a few good people in power could guide us back to greatness. -

Nice looking rifle! The color variations in the stock are pretty wild. I don't imagine you'll have much trouble at that price. -

Excellent. Thanks for posting. I'll be circulating copies of this for a long time to come. One point if I may: The SCOTUS is perhaps the most powerful group in government with regard to maintaining the constitution, and the people of the land have no direct voice in who is elevated to that position. Then again, if the people had a voice in this case it would likely become a beauty contest. -
That would be the southern tier, not the southern zone. Two very different things, although I knew what you meant Culvercreek. Dave asked above about the southern 'zone' when I think he meant the southern 'tier' mentioned in an earlier post.

Dinner-for-two gift cards to a few nice restaurants. Might take you some time to run around to a half-dozen places, but that's part of the gift. Pick a couple that have nice music and dancing too.

Written descriptions of the DMU boundaries used to be included in the yearly rule book as I recall, but I just checked and didn't see them. I know they're on the DEC website though. Once you get the boundaries figured out give Google Earth a try for overhead imagery. If nothing else it's a lot of fun to just 'fly' around and get a feel for the surroundings. Best of luck.

It's not something I would do, but to each their own.

It'll come. One of the hardest parts is learning from your mistakes, and not making the mistake again. -

Pro-Gun, Anti-NRA
philoshop replied to Curmudgeon's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
It seems that many people simply believe the government will never try to take away the particular gun that they own. I mean the specific gun that they have in their closet with serial #xxxx that they use to hunt with a few times a year. I know several gun owners who think this way whether they are aware of it or not. What these folks don't understand is the stated end-vision of the rabid anti-gun crowd: the 'magical kingdom' of a world without guns. Whether you like the NRA or not, they are are the organization that is best able to fight against the anti's. By the time the gun-grabbers get around to that hunting gun in the closet it will be far too late to start caring. -
Low prices at the pump will last 3 to 6 months before there's a major correction by the powers that be. A stagnant economy in the private sector in NYS will be handed down for generations. If people stay around long enough to even care. I'm too old for a government job, dammit!

Pro-Gun, Anti-NRA
philoshop replied to Curmudgeon's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Because even the smallest of concessions is immediately trumpeted as a huge win by the anti's who have absolute control over most media outlets in this country. The average Joe with no horse in the race is going to side with whoever seems to be winning. Tiny steps turn into huge victories. Never give an inch. Criminals generally don't use legally purchased firearms anyways. -
Pro-Gun, Anti-NRA

The EPA wants to have management rights over my drainage ditch. They don't even know that it's there, but they want control over it. The FDA wants control over my diet. Mostly stuff I've killed in my back yard, but they want control over it. The FDA also wants to take away my personal vaporizer (aka, electronic cigarette) because it might somehow prove to be harmful to me. That I haven't had a single cigarette in almost six months because of it doesn't matter. They want control over it. The EPA wants to make me use a different woodstove to heat my house. There are apparently problems with the smoke in some parts of the country. No complaints from my neighbors. It's about control. The state of NY wants me to register my guns. Control. The federal government would like to have a say in my ownership of guns. Control. People want me to live according to some Utopian vision to which I do not subscribe. Control. ............................................ -
I believe it would be nice if I had some steady employment building housing and other commodity structures to support an economic upswing in this state. I guess I'll look into opening a pawn shop wherever they decide to open the new casino instead.

Pro-Gun, Anti-NRA
philoshop replied to Curmudgeon's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
The anti-gun movement is global, and the intent is to confine any and all firearms ownership and control to nation-states. A quick look at any typical UN meeting agenda should clear that up if you have any doubt. The US is one of the few nation-states on this planet that has managed to retain firearm ownership privileges for its citizens. In this country it is not just a privilege, but a right that was written into the very framework of our nation for a very specific reason: as a means of defending our other rights from any and all who would have us live by some other framework. That we have managed to survive and thrive for the past hundred or so years of global upheaval is a testament to the greatness of what this country is about, due in large part to those founding principals being held dear by every citizen. Some of the citizens of this country, many in fact, would like to see us become more like the rest of the nation-states on the planet, wherein the concept of 'the greater good' holds primacy over any and all individual rights. There are fine points that can be argued here for sure, but at it's most basic level this is not what this country has ever been about. The NRA works to maintain a very basic right in this country: the right of the people to be able to say "no" to those who would change the country in any fundamental way without due process. The NRA doesn't always get it right in the details, but they're fighting against a global surge that will accept every inch that is handed to them. For this, I support them, and us. -
You deserve every bit of that smile on your face! Nice job. Judging by the size of his head he could easily have been 30# or so heavier a few weeks ago. He's been a busy boy.

Don't forget the electric boot dryer if you don't already have one. Makes a world of difference IMHO. -

I can't seem to open the link. Is this an isolated thing or is it happening in other places? -
Glad to have you here Vinny! Pull up a chair and get comfortable.

Being outdoors is, and has always been for me, better than being indoors. Hunting gives me one more reason to be outside. I saw this thread early this morning and had to think about it a bit, while I took care of various outdoor chores all day.

Have fun with them! You will quickly find a bunch of muscles you never knew you had, lol. Keep up on the maintenance if you're really going to depend on them though. It's no fun at all slogging your way back out through chest-deep snow because of a broken binding. I say this from experience.
-
Phade, the cookie jar analogy is perfect as far as trying to pattern deer. LOL
-
Yeah! We had the first significant snow just yesterday and last night. Then again, I didn't see a single track on my camera hike this AM. BTW, great looking spot. And a 30-40 Krag will definitely put a deer down, lol.
-
I'm done deer hunting for the season but after I plowed some snow and brushed off the firewood this morning I took a walk with the camera. I did about a mile of field edges near my place and saw zero deer tracks in the fresh snow. I'm guessing their holding tight in the grain fields right now. Those fields would be another half mile up from my hunting area.
