2022-23 Crows and Pigeons
GreenDrake replied to GreenDrake's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Slow the last 2 weeks. Since there is no snow, the crows are not hitting a specific feed and are breaking up after flying off roost. We managed to kill 15 last weekend and another 20 this past weekend. My nephew killed a banded bird this past weekend, to add to the banded crow I shot last winter. This past Sunday we did set up on a morning flyway of perhaps a thousand birds, but since legal shooting doesn't start until Sunrise, we had to watch them fly on by. That was NOT an easy thing to do. -
Her younger days slam pointing

Here is one of my current setters….Dixie. Got her from a grouse kennel on Kentucky. She is also a Grouse Ridge Reroy pup. Best bird dog I have ever encountered and I have owned and hunted over a great many. She is now 13 and still hunts like a trooper. Steady…methodical and the most gentle soul.

Good going!! i just scouted and found a decent crow feed. 500-600 in a cut corn field. Gonna hit it Monday morning. Overall numbers are down around here this year. Hopefully more birds move in for the winter.

2022-23 Crows and Pigeons
GreenDrake replied to GreenDrake's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Nephew and I killed 36 crows Sunday morning. Had we been able to start shooting before legal sunrise we could have doubled that. Then we went to a dairy and climbed on top if the corn bunker. Killed 30 pigeons and 6 more crows. All morning crows killed with new custom hand calls my wife bought me for Christmas. Never turned in the Foxpro. -
Now that deer season is all but over, we will start hunting winter crows and pigeons. Scouted a couple good flyways and crow feeds and the numbers look good. The calls and decoys are ready and we will hit them the 26th. This nasty weather is great crow calling weather and usually sends big numbers of pigeons to the corn and silage bunkers.

Wolc….I’m praying for you pal. You have been wayyyy to quiet for me this year!!! My wife and I tagged out early November on my new property in NZ in 6k…nephew tagged out on this bruiser on my southern lease. We sat last Sunday with a camera…18 doe and 3 small racked bucks fed in our plots all afternoon. We have a nice group of 2 1/2 yr old 8s we are excited to see make it as well. Next year should be interesting.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the advantage to canning the Venison as opposed to freezing it? My mother canned EVERYTHING, as in 300 plus quarts of tomatoes a year, but never anything like venison.

Official 2022 Fall Plots Thread
GreenDrake replied to Five Seasons's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Very nice indeed. My Brassica's Sh-t the bed, though there are some really nice bulbs which have been getting picked at and hopefully will produce later on. Time did not allow me to manage them well after they took off. WIll be interesting to see how they draw. I also have chicory, beets and radish mixed on one half of the big plot. Corn is being cut in the immediate neighborhood, so the deer are concentrated there now -
Nice morning in the box blind with muzzleloader. Doe and fawn paid us a visit. Yesterday our “pet” 4 pt came out as we were leaving. I followed him around talking to him as he fed and rubbed a few trees. It was hysterical. I got to within 10 feet of him. He followed my wife and I all summer. Whether I was brush hogging…running chain saw..or my wife clearing brush.

What's your favorite sound to hear in the deer woods?
GreenDrake replied to Five Seasons's topic in Deer Hunting
I agree with Paula. Every creature has its wake up times too. -
Mine did the same thing. My field was pretty wet too. They were doing great then all turned about 3 weeks ago

Killed 3 nice roosters over the old gal today. Her nose is still gold.
-
Nephew was able to take 2 nice roosters over Dixie yesterday. Being 13, we are only going to take her for glorified "hunting walks" this year, despite her drive to hunt hard. 2 beautiful points and retrieves is good enough in my book.
-
So you hunted with my nephew (joey) and the boys? Are you the one who used his Maxus? He is having bad luck with his A5. We bought 3 and all 3 had problems but my 2 have resolved They are a good group of guys. Joey is a savage on the gun.

35,000 for a new tractor what would you buy?
GreenDrake replied to First-light's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
150 with an option for the adjoining 102. This is the view from 2 of my 2 box blinds last year. Its much different and cleaner now. The last is of the hydro seeding this weekend -
I'm sure you have had some hair-raising experiences tracking bears?

I couldn't wait to tear it down!! That is now where my log pile is from the 100 trees we took out on the front of the property where the house is going. -
NOT CANCER!!!! We are so relieved. She recovered from the surgery beautifully.
