  1. I love standing in an old cellar hole and trying to decipher from the terrain, foliage and even the directional orientation of the house as to where certain outbuildings, gardens, clotheslines, etc. may have once stood. Imo, piecing the puzzle is just as enjoyable as sinking a shovel on a target Sent from my SCH-S720C using Tapatalk 2
  2. Aside from the obvious like minimizing movement, masks definately should be utilized. At least I always do. Of course stand hunting is an advantage due to being above their line of site, but stand placement is important as well. Sure a deer will come ambling to the corn field on Oct. 1st and never even think to watch the trees, but try that scenario out on Nov. 1st after the woods have been filled with hunters and the smell of hunters. Remember, deer can pattern you just as easy as you can them. Sent from my SCH-S720C using Tapatalk 2
  3. I don't know about you guys, but I get a tingle in my cods about this time every year whenever I so much as think about hunting! Lol Sent from my SCH-S720C using Tapatalk 2
  4. Here's most of my current collection. I've sold most of the jewelry. All these items were found by me personally. The clay pipe and the red Iroquois bead next to it are my most recent finds. Can you guess what caliber the casing on the left is? To the right of it is a 300win mag, 22mag, 22lr. Sent from my SCH-S720C using Tapatalk 2
  5. I would also check out Big Boys Hobbies. For entry level machines, I'd reccomend the Fisher F2. They have kits for about $215 that includes a pinpointer, a regular 8" coil and a 4" sniper coil. Of course with most things, you get what you pay for so if you have $ to throw around, then go with the best you can afford. Sent from my SCH-S720C using Tapatalk 2
  6. I e-mailed frank a couple years ago about the series and if it would be airing in my area. He told me they were hoping to. This is the first I've heard anything since thenSent from my SCH-S720C using Tapatalk 2
  7. Trapping is the way to go. It doesn't get much easier if you can keep the oppossum and skunks outta your sets. When I say easy, I just mean waaay easier than K9 trapping. A 1 1/2 duke coilspring is perfectly adequate for taking coons. A sweet anise bait or tuna fish is all you need. I mostly trap K9s and mink and I try like heck not to catch coons for no other reason than I hate putting up coon pelts. A big boar coon is GREASY!! A baby coon sound on a foxpro/e-caller will get them coming in too. Sent from my SCH-S720C using Tapatalk 2
  8. I bought a metal detector a few months ago and planned on getting back into it and hitting the spots I researched a few years ago, but haven't had the time. It is quite fun trying to step back in time and imagine where buildings/houses once stood. My native American artifact collection did grow last week when I found my first Iroquois wampum bead. I'll post some pics this weekend and yes treasurenet.com is a great site. I've been a member there for years. Sent from my SCH-S720C using Tapatalk 2
  9. I've normally practiced out to 45. My longest shot(clean kill) on a deer was 45-48 yds. When I upgrade my bow this year I will be practicing out to 60 yds
  10. Likewise. I'll let you know when the Susky turns on. I can't wait for the smallies to start hammering top water baits!I love fishing for them on the Chenango too, all the way up to the Forks.
  11. I got one for ya. I don't need it. I'll be working in Endwell tomorrow morning just off Hooper rd., then the rest of the day will be in Bing
  12. It was a great show. We just got home and I'm gonna be feeling it in the morning!
  13. I'll be there for what I consider this once in a lifetime pairing of Artists. I was raised on their music and still listen religiously. I'll be the guy with the sleeveless T-shirt holding a beer! LOL
  14. Hopefully the landowners can appreciate some local history. Maybe you can offer to show them how you researched it's location and let them tag along on the probing. Once you can prove that you've found a privy, they'll be hooked and want to see what lies below. Maybe offer to put together a nice photo journal of the whole process
  15. If you're really serious, look into doing a privy dig or at least check out some videos online. Some beauties are scored doing this. My brother and I plan on digging some privies when we get the time. I've already made up some bottle probes from the trunk springs of a 1970's car that I found out in the woods.
  16. I've got a few dozen bottles. I only keep the cork stopper type, not screw tops. My best and favorite farm dump of bottles is on our land that has been in the family since the mid 1800's. I look it over every year and am usually able to muster up 1 or 2 whole bottles from the 1000's of broken ones.
  17. Wow! Good stuff! How did you preserve them? I wasn't able to make it out, but I heard this was a good year for them. I'll definitely be making time once my chanterelle / deer scouting season arrives
  18. If you're serious about making a quality target, you could hit Home Depot and pick up a few pieces of rigid insulation board. You'll also want a good/tough sheathing to hold it all together, like maybe a few layers of carpet on either side and between the boards. Then wrap it really tight with a wooden frame made out of 1 x 6 boards. Then you can build a frame for it to stand/hang from out of PVC pipe. Packing/shipping foam will crumble. The rigid insulation will break, but not nearly as much. We use rigid board for knife throwing
  19. Well I hope you can sink another hook in that big boy! I hooked a slammer a few years back downstream from the weir hole. It got off, but it confirmed the tales of whoppers in the west branch.
  20. I was in Depo today for my grandfathers burial. It was a beautiful ceremony, been a looong day. I noticed some guys on the river just downstream of the bridge near Hornbecks. Wish I had time to dust off the fly rod
  21. haha The weed really did a number on that dude!
  22. A friendly tip- learn how to ID smooth/golden Chanterelles and Horn-of-plenty/Black trumpet mushrooms(which is pretty simple) and you'll be rushing to the store to pick up some Delmonico's to have with them!
  23. When in doubt, throw em out! Also, just because a mushroom is said to be edible, that may not be the case for everyone. Such is the case for my cousin who had gastrointestinal upset from eating Hen-of-the-woods when the rest of us were fine. Like I've said before, once you're 100% sure of what you have, you should start by eating a small piece and wait a few hours to be sure you're not gonna get a bellyache. That said, I personally only harvest and consume about a dozen kinds of shroom just for the fact that they are pretty easy to ID and have minimal look-alikes. Even the simple puffball that grows on your lawn can have a horrible look alike called Amanitas (death angels) and when in button stage can appear as a puffball
