  1. Congrats! Shawn- you tried any of Pmacks or Kevins lights?
  2. Those cold temps makes them need to eat more, therefore they're more likely to rush into a distress call. Good luck! Get em'!
  3. Taking out the Alpha Male can be great! It will allow more subordinate yotes to move through trying to establish dominance.
  4. Stick with it. You'll connect. Why didn't you try to lip squeak the critter in??? There's no set rule on how long to stay on stand. Sometimes they come in slow so you might not see any til the 1 hour mark. Just don't over-call and remember, they won't respond unless they hear your call. You never know, they might not be into hearing range until your last call sequence.
  5. Believe it or not the Black & Decker handheld that takes 4AA batteries is very nice and it's only $20.http://www.walmart.com/ip/Black-Decker-3-Watt-Alkaline-LED-Spotlight/16933433 I've never cared for rechargeable lights, I'd rather get rechargeable batteries and bring backups on all night hunts. I made a red filter for it. A gun mounted light is the way to go. Handheld kill lights are tough when using a scoped rifle. When I'm shotgunning, I use handheld for scanning then switch to a headlamp to take the shot. I keep my hand light on a lanyard so I can go hands free and then switch on the gun light.
  6. Being a predator hunter and since I mostly hunt them in the dark, by myself, I don't scare very easy. Here's a true story that happened 3 years ago on our family land that has been in my family since the early 1800's. I was predator hunting one night and ventured out of the fields and into the timber to a ladder stand. It was mid January and there was no snow on the ground. Anyway, I had done some calling from up in the stand and soon heard an animal approaching, a heavy animal with footsteps that sounded like a deer. The footsteps were spaced apart so I knew it wasnt a small animal with a small stride like a raccoon or opossum. I figured either a yote or deer. So the sound came directly towards me and when it got about 25yds away it stopped. I then hit it with my flashlight and there was nothing there. I thought maybe it was just standing behind a tree and I couldn't see it. Nope! After a couple minutes I called a few times and still nothing. I then climbed down with the light shining the whole time. Still nothing. After I walked over to where it was last heard I saw/heard no evidence of anything fleeing. Needless to say I called it a night and started walking back to the house.
  7. True The pound of Elk sausage I just ate was scrumptious
  8. You wanna see mean, just walk near a momma Goshawk's nest! I swear you can see their fiery red eyes from 50yds.!
  9. To me, it's not archery. Keep it in gun season and I'd be fine with em and might even give em a try. I think they'd be a great tool during gun season. I feel they'd give an unfair advantage over the bowhunters and would draw some whackos to our sport. Plus if I used one during bow, I'd be tagged out in the first week! lol
  10. Test er' out! It should at least put out some decent distress sounds. Not sure if the volume will be adequate enough to reproduce good howls/barks. If you learn to use an open reed howler, you should do alright
  11. May your day be merry and bright! Merry Christmas guys/gals! Sent from my SCH-S720C using Tapatalk 2
  12. very cool, but what if I don't blog? will just liking & sharing suffice? Happy Holidays Shawn! Sent from my SCH-S720C using Tapatalk 2
  13. wherever there is prey, you can find predators. yotes can travel 10 miles in one night. if you're having no luck in finding open fields to call, you may just want to switch to hunting in the timber @ dawn/dusk Sent from my SCH-S720C using Tapatalk 2
  14. what about it dont you buy(understand)? the only part of that post which was of personal opinion was about coyotes being more of a challenge than deer. the rest are proven facts Sent from my SCH-S720C using Tapatalk 2

    Indoors

I never have but might start. Interested in hearing what kind of backstops you guys use. I could probably pull off 20yds in the basement
  16. Maybe I'll see you there scouting next summer. I just dread bagging a whopper way back in there. Maybe we could stash a wheel barrow or a deer cart somewhere for that and agree to return it to an established spot.
  17. 30gr is a relatively light load for yotes. I prefer 40gr. JHP's. There's no doubt that a mag will kill a yote at further ranges, but are you going to find it? Headshot, probably. A bodyshot will most likely create for you an all day tracking job. Coyotes are incredibly tough and their fur soaks up blood like a sponge. Now couple that with an entry wound no bigger than a BIC pen(probably no exit hole) and the ability to cover ground very fast. You'd just better have snow to track it! Knowing your guns' abilities is just a smart move and will probably save you from some heart/headaches. You can "poke & hope" if you choose to.
  18. I use one as well and I feel confident in being able to make good shots, but I will be the first to admit that it is not gonna give consistent results especially when you start shooting over 100yds. Oh you said coy dogs, that's the yuppy version of coyotes! lol
  19. and limit those shots to 35yds. If you want a shotgun load that will reach further and penetrate the eastern coyotes fur you should look into #4buckshot or something in T or BB sized shot. Just don't get suckered into buying those Hevi-shot heavy duty loads that Dicks has been carrying, they are frangible and will just turn to dust if they hit skull or bone. I've been trying out the Hornady Critical Defense #4buck. It patterns ok out of my full choke out to 50yds. They have the Versa-tite flight control wad which holds the shot together. They might be awesome in your gun if you're limited to Imp.Cyl. or modified chokes. If they can hold a pattern @ 60yds out of my Imp.Cyl. I'll stick with them, if not I'll probably be switching back to Federals.
