That is kinda what I meant with my post... you used the word "my" several times... from your point of view you see what you do as deer management when in fact it is hunter management or even better yet "personal deer management"... true it may work great for you and your hunting experience, but doesn't necessarily do anything for deer management from a conservation point of view... In my view QDM and TDM are programs that evolved from the original concept of managing deer herds based on given habitat for the overall benefit of the deer... into managing deer herds to suit personal hunting pleasure...more of a hunting management plan... all that is fine if thats what you're into.. I just don't like the dishonesty by hunters when it comes to the real reason they have adopted a "deer management plan" ...and that is for their own personal hunting experience... with deer conservation being secondary to their personal wants.

I think the DEC better think this one through... not seeing a lot of interest from guys during the regular season... but I guess everything new starts out a bit slow... just seems like not many are going to give up hunting with their rifles and shotguns for a crossbow... I guess we'll have to see.

The alert ears are a good way to get measurements.. an adult whitetails ears in the alert position are around 15" tip to tip... using that as a benchmark you can estimate the other measurements relatively close... but obviously it is just an estimate... the hardest thing to get a lock on would be the circumference... a buck like that I wouldn't give more than 13-14 inches of circumference on a side based on most the bucks that I've measured

This is a buck I photographed in the 1990's at Avery's deer farm on Route 10 just south of Speculator, NY... he was a huge 9-point... he weighed well over 250 lbs on the hoof... eventually they had to have him put down because he got so dominant in the herd that he was killing off many of the older bucks. He was from the same herd as the most photographed whitetail in the world "Big Jim".. made famous by Charlie Alshiemer...

I may purchase one... just to maybe use on a whim during the gun season...not really sure yet, but it might be a good challenge... I just don't see myself using it all that much without a season of it's own.

I was working the booth... and for the record... I believe the fellas saw a big buck... just not one that scores 195+... the chance of one of those guys seeing a 190 class buck is very remote... let alone a dozen guys... I actually told one guy that I give him a years pay if he killed the buck he saw and it scored in the 190's typical..lol

I was at the NYS Fair yesterday at the NYS Big Buck Club booth and that is what a bunch of hunters said as they pointed to the Roosevelt Luckey Buck... I just laughed as they looked at me kinda funny...

Remember if you quarter it in the field you must have in your possession something that tells the sex of the deer.. even tagged you can get in trouble for not having evidence of the sex while taking it out of the woods.

you'll be hardpressed to find any shotgun for under $100.. even the H&R's... I have 3 NE Arms guns and the new price has shot up on them

without the velvet he is much smaller than you think.. but he might just make 130+... good spread... but he's not gonna make 140

Although I wouldn't lose any sleep if crossbows were put into archery season... I don't ever see myself using one instead of my trad bows... I would much rather see a short crossbow only season. The issue though would be.. when and where would it fit in...

There is always a learning curve when something changes, but I like the new look.

As I stated earlier, he's a great looking 3 year old but isn't 150 class...I'd say more like 130-135. I bet he'd hit 150 next year though!!! My estimates: mainbeam: 21 G1: 3 G2: 6.5 G3: 7 G4: 4 Mass: 16 Total = 57.5 x 2 = 116 + 16" spread = 132 He actually looked much bigger with velvet on .. more 150ish.. his pics without velvet definitely say 130-135

True when you are talking about the hunters point of view... from a management point of few... only the first one is true.

Being for AR's should be solely in the interest of having a balanced age structure among the bucks in a given habitit... without consideration for how hard the hunting is or how much time one has to hunt.. etc... good deer management is done for the sake of improving the deer herd based on available habitat and other needs within the herd... not hunter interest in big antlers... although that is a "not so bad" bi-product of having a balanced buck herd.

The tag only allowed you to take one deer anyway.. that hasn't changed.

He's actually over 100"... but yes still would be nice to get at least another year on him.
