  1. I'm not the kind of guy that gets all wrapped up in balistics and such as long as it kills deer... I was just curious about the FFF... finer powder during hunting season for me has always resulted in more of my gun not going off... I don't have that problem with FF... I have shot 7F at the range (ran out of ff and thats all I had in the box)... and didn't see that much difference at 50 yards... but I had a ton of no fires
  2. Buck antler will be hardened by now or within the next week or so... and velvet will be shedding between now and the first part of Sept. I have seen velvet still on during Labor day but not much longer after that. Like a lot of the deer world though... there are huge windows for a lot things.
  3. Thank heavens we've got a self-appointed keeper of the facts here : Sometimes pointing out the facts is needed on this forum... they seem to be missed or re-created a lot around here.
  4. not good.. kinda like a "fat man in a skinny coat"... ;D
  5. Papa.. why FFF?... you getting better groups with that instead of FF? I shoot the same gun 100 grains of FF at 50.. with about the same results
  6. I climbed a ladder and hung all my stands on the wall in my garage years ago...
  7. For the record I wasn't talking about anyone in particular.. I was talking in general... and it wasn't meant to be an insult to anyone... it's an observation I have made over the years about most hunter... It wouldn't matter what new hunting regulation came down the pike... or what the situation was with animal populations, or anything that has to do with conservation... hunters simply want what's best for themselves without regard for whether it is or isn't good for conservation... you can call it what you like.. I call it selfishness... the truth is .. if the DEC said that we needed to stop all DMP's tomorrow for the sake of some management concern... guys would have a fit because they wouldn't be allowed to kill their 4 doe this year... they couldn't care less what affect regulations have or don't have on management and wildlife... to me I have seen enough of it that it's a fact.. you might consider it an opinion... either way it's still selfishness... and not a good way to determine what hunting regulations are needed or not.
  8. Good body size on that last deer... look at the wrinkles in the neck.... I think I'm shooting that buck!
  9. Not a bit. I fully expect a forum to involve differences of opinion. We as hunters have a whole lot of things that generate opinions and usually one guy's opinion is directly opposite of the next. Perhaps the way people express themselves can get a bit objectionable, but you have to remember that outdoorsmen and women are generally very passionate about our activities and how they are conducted. Sometimes it gets a bit overboard. Actually if it weren't for differences of opinion, these forum pages would be almost blank. However, it maybe would be worth recognizing that just because we disagree, it doesn't mean that we always have to go for the throat. well said
  10. Lol ...... there goes that favorite forum phrase again. Whenever somebody thinks their arguments don't have enough strength on their own, they trot out that tired old "selfishness" thing again. Save it! .......it doesn't work anymore and is beginning to sound a bit silly. You can call it what you like... but selfishness is what it is when one wants to do something simply because it serves himself without regard for anything other than his interest... and most hunters are just that... selfish when it comes to conservation and wildlife ... they talk a good game until things don't fit into their program... I'm not saying that all the hunting regs are good or bad.. but if the DEC is to be the ones to make wildlife conservation and management decisions... those decisions can't be adopted or not adopted.. because Joe Blow wants to be able to shoot anything he likes without regard for its affect on wildlife.
  11. Kind of the same thing with ar's, why should we be having people choosing what we can or can't shoot. But they are and it is getting worse. You already have rules about what you can and can't shoot based on what the DEC thinks is necessary... they tell you when, where, how and how many...when people are allowed to do whatever they want without rules you get chaos... hunter selfishness is no reason to not adopt something that may be good for the deer population... certainly you get to voice your opinion... but just because we want something or don't... doesn't make it the right thing to do.
  12. Correction... Richard M.Buquoi is the photographer... it is a Melanistic Deer... cause by the production of too much melanin ... the opposite of an albino which is lacking melanin.. see more of Richards pics here http://rmbuquoiphoto.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/Land-Mammals/G0000TFzI4B5LV_k/I0000rq7L1a8ozuI
  13. That is becasue both are deeply rooted pursuits. We have been engaged in both since we first crawled out of the ooze and stood on two feet. Not sure how this thread could cause such a ruckus... damn you Bubba!!
  14. I own 6 acres and lease 1000 in central NY... I own a camp on 5 1/2 acres in the Tughill region surrounded by over 5000 acres of State land... I have one double ladder stand that I use for photographing on the lease land... I hunt the adirondacks on the weekends and hunt locally during the week. Haven't hunted much in Tughill .. the camp is only a year old so I haven't spent much time there during hunting season yet.. hopefully more this year.
  15. I would finally have a good reason to move to another state...
  16. Not that I recall off the top of my head.. but it's possible.. I'd have to check
  17. Joe, what would people do if they shut down the supermarkets? How would they eat, who would provide for them. They can afford to have their attitudes as long as the supermarket shelves are stocked and can buy anything they want. In bad times it would be good to have a hunter for a friend. Dave Yes and its a shame that they don't see it that way...
  18. I think we have found some common ground Steve...
  19. The way this economy is going... we might have a saving grace in that people will have to hunt and fish soon to get something to eat... and maybe trap to have something warm to wear... and maybe even learn how to build a fir to keep warm... ;D
  20. Hey Shadow have you been following me around? I see you everwhere I go Welcome!
  21. Bitter maybe, but the truth! I'd rather puff my chest about my two productive boys that have both graduated from college and gone on to good careers... a little parenting does go a long way!
  22. Kinda proves the point that nobody truly owns anything if the government says you don't...
