Hey, I'd be willing to come out, look at the tree, stand around, (but not too close), with a cold iced tea in hand, do a lot of pointing, with added hand gestures, mumble a bit under my breath. Then tell ya that maybe, moog or rob-c could help ya more than I can??? Oh yeah......can I get a refill on this iced tea???

How About Some Rain
grampy replied to landtracdeerhunter's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Have you tried setting plow depth to 4" or so, just to break up the top , and then disc? That is about all we can do now. But it's all we need to do for a food plot. -
Nice video! Thanks for sharing!

Can the spines puncture a finger or anything they may come in contact with? They do appear to be a PITA! I haven't come in contact with them........yet.

We haven't put out cams yet. Probably will first week of August. But we have seen a bunch of deer lately, including one of our biggest bucks from last year! Lots of doe with fawns too. And there is a couple small bucks, out in the cow pasture behind my house most early mornings. Bears, seem to be laying low in all this heat, no sightings of them in quite some time. Over all, considering last winters weather in the hilltowns outside of Albany, the deer population looks good in or area of 4H.

Same here. My backyard is a former cow pasture. 50/50, weeds and various grasses. -

Yeah, it's dry, but it's the perfect conditions to get those fall plots prepared for the August/September seeding. It's also good for brush hogging trails. My lawn is still green and growing like crazy here! Wish it would start to brown up some! -
Depending on weather, as it's best to seed right before a soaking rain. From The first or second week of August to the first or second week of September. That will still give you a nice green plot for the middle of November.

2018 HuntingNY Whitetail Classic
grampy replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in 2018 HuntingNY Whitetail Classic
Most years I don't shoot a doe either. If I do it's only one, as that's all the meat I need. So it does kinda put the hunters who don't shoot does 20pts behind. I'll need to shoot a 30 pointer to win!........lol -
I don't like to text or post much from the stand. Most of my set ups are in fairly thick areas. Not too often do I have the luxury of seeing them coming from a distance, to get ready. So things tend to happen quickly. I need to be ready to shoot at any time. My bow is always in my hand, release on the loop. My gun is always in my lap with my hand on the stock. Over many years, I have grunt call, bino's, rangefinder, snacks, or whatever I may need, (I tend to go light) ORGANIZED! I need to be able to reach with one hand, into a small fanny pack, so I can retrieve anything in there blindfolded if need be. And with barely a sound. All while my hunting implement is in my lap. This is just what works for me.

Looks like it was a nice place before the db's moved in. Maybe I should move out that way, and rent it! Larry, you could shoot your bow from your roof, to my backyard, no problem! And I could lounge on a floaty, in your pool wearing a speedo, drinking Genny Cream Ale, and "making bubbles"! Care to join me neighbor! Splish Splash......BLUUUB...Blub..blluubb.

2018 HuntingNY Whitetail Classic
grampy replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in 2018 HuntingNY Whitetail Classic
I'm in! No chance of winning, but do want to participate, and donate a prize. Will be fun to follow along! Can I be the one to enter my grandson Zach, for the youth division? Good luck to all! -
When deer hunting, where is your bow or firearm? In hand, hung up, or just laying nearby? I 'ALWAYS' have mine in my hand, or in my lap, when hunting. I learned the hard way to always be ready to shoot! After I started deer hunting, I used a combination of all three for years. Until one cold, morning with light snow falling, a day or so after Thanksgiving. I was sitting under a large hemlock tree. Had my hands in my pockets, my Ithaca leaning against the tree next to me. Had been there for four or five hours, and not seen a deer. Then I heard a stick break, way off behind me, so I slowly turn to look back, behind me through the hemlocks. So I'm looking, and don't see anything. I turn back around to see this giant buck, in front of me! Looking at me from 30 yards or so! Here we are in a staring contest, my gun leaning against the tree to my left. My heart is pounding! This was, at the time by far, the biggest buck I'd ever seen!!! And like big bucks do, he just appeared out of nowhere! I am trying to "slowly" move my left hand to my gun, but every time I moved even an inch this buck would do the head bob, and stomp, while facing me! I'm sure by this point my eyes were like dinner plates, with my mouth hanging open!! He finally turns broadside, looking right at me, as my left hand grips the Ithaca! (I'm right handed) It is at that time, he runs right at me, To within a few feet, full speed to my right! I grab my gun, spinning around, to see him disappear behind a large hemlock tree, and then another! I would almost get on him, and he'd be out of my sight picture again, till he was gone! Without me firing a shot. Had my gun been in my hands, I'm pretty sure the outcome could have been different. After trailing the buck a couple hundred yards, I saw the tracks of a lone doe, and his come together. The source of the noise I heard in the beginning, no doubt. Never saw that buck again. Not from lack of effort I assure you! From that day, my bow or gun is always in my hands, when I am hunting! And it surely has made a difference, many times, in hunts that came after the one above. Since it's the off season, figured I'd post something deer hunting related. Along with a lesson I learned a long time ago. Figured the title would bring some attention to the subject!!!.......................................grin

Every ground blind I have, 20 or so, has two milk crates. And just like dbHunterNY, they stay out all year, and I bring in a thick foam pad to hunt. They are not as comfy as some of the "lounge chairs" I see. But they are quiet, and just the right height for me.

First, congratulations on bagging four more peaks my friend! What an awesome adventure! I want to say how enjoyable it is to read your posts, and see the pictures of your hikes! I hope you have been keeping a journal, as I'm certain it could be a great book someday! Your way if telling the story is captivating. I'm happy you are ok. Avoiding all risks doing something like this is impossible. Especially going solo. Also, the risk is part of what draws one to the mountains. And without it, would somewhat lessen the experience. Been there, done that in my younger days. Your drive and grit are admirable John! As well as your "trail karma"! Can't wait for you to take us along on your next adventure!

Field pic's please!

I do know deer will eat aquatic plants. Is there deer that visit the pond Matt? Just a suggestion, as I have no clue what ate them, for sure.

????......Where is all the love you showed him last year?

It really is a shame, when instead of just moving on, or passing through, a bear becomes acclimated to the "good life". Which usually means a short life for the bear.
