My Grandson Shooting "His" New Rifle
grampy replied to grampy's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Grandson will be coming over this evning, after his baseball game, to clean his rifle. His decision, not mine. It's not a top of the line rifle, or even middle. But it is a good shooter! It will serve him well, as it did for me, for a few years until he upgrades. But this being his "first" rifle, I think it will always have a special place in his future collection. As of today, I don't think he'd trade it for a Weatherby..........grin. -
Shot His new rifle, instead of our bows tonight. Bows are on deck though!

Picked up my grandson after work tonight. He came to help me cut grass, and we had plans to shoot our bows after we were done. So we went downstairs to get them, and he picks up my Savage Axis 7mm-08, with Leuplold VX2 and some trigger work. He asks if we can shoot this instead? He is 14, and this will be his first deer season to hunt with a rifle. So I said sure, we can go shoot "YOUR" rifle! It officially became "His" at that moment! He set it down and gave me a big hug, and said thanks grampy. Well, after the lump left my throat, I said lets gather up our stuff and head over to the club range. He has shot this a couple of times. But now he was shooting His rifle for the first time! He did pretty good at 117 yards! We have always shared a special bond of hunting and the outdoors. I think today made us just a little closer. This rifle will be what he takes afield, for his first gun hunt, and he will kill the first of many deer with this. I'll be along side him when that first one falls. With a smile on my face, and tears welling in my eyes. The circle will be complete then.

While out last weekend, I saw, 'Dead Man's Ale'. Anyone ever try it? Might give it a go this weekend? If I drink beer, I'm usually just a, 'Coors Lite' kinda guy. I know, boring.............................. I actually don't drink much alcohol at all anymore. I know, boring.........................lol.

Anti Bacteria Products, Attractants & Cover Scents

Anti Bacteria Products, Attractants & Cover Scents
grampy replied to landtracdeerhunter's topic in General Chit Chat
There is NOTHING you can buy, that will make you scent free to a deer! But there are things that will help to reduce the amount of scent you give off. I shower with the green HS body soap. Use Arm and Hammer scentless deodorant. Wash hunting clothes in a scentless non UV detergent. And store them in airtight totes with dried leaves in a pillow case. I will spray down with the Dead Downwind before entering to hunt. Years ago, I gave up on using attraction scents. I feel they did more harm than good for me. But, a couple years ago I tried "Evercalm" in a stick. And I've seen it work time and time again! I hunt 90% from the ground. And have watched deer cross over my trail with "Evercalm" on my boots and not once became alarmed!! In 45 years of deer hunting, I've never seen something work as good for a cover scent! Also use it around trail cams. That being said, number one, above all else, HUNT THE WIND! Pay close attention to changing thermals! Play the wind on entry, even if it's a longer, more difficult walk in! If the wind changes to the deer's favor, MOVE! You will only tip the deer off to your presence with your scent blowing to them! As I said, there is NOTHING you can do, to be scent free from a deer! -
Sure is pretty Bill! Now give us the details!

Looks really nice Swamp_bucks! My hunting partner put a Boyds on his 30-06 Savage Axis. Fit perfectly, and looks so much better. I'm going to get one for my grandsons 7mm-08 Axis.

Though there are deer, and some very nice bucks behind the house, I don't hunt there. I travel about 15 minutes up the hill, to our farm or lake properties, for hunting. The critters behind the house are kind of like my wild "pets". Three years ago, when we moved in, the yard was pretty sparse, being a former cow pasture. Had some left over clover seed from a plot, so I just threw it out back. Now I get all sorts of critters enjoying that clover! And I enjoy watching them.

Looked out my bedroom window this morning to see this fawn chasing birds and kicking up his heels. Made me laugh out loud! A few times, his mom came out to usher him into the thick brush. Each time, he would follow her until she disappeared, then stop, turn around and run back into the yard. Seemed like mom, barely tolerated this little game. This went on for 45 minutes, until I left for work. Had me smiling all the way there. What a way to start the day.

Just sayin, if you can drive your car to within 200 yards of the campsite, it's not exactly a "back country" hike in, camping trip. Being able to drive that close to the site. Seems like you could bring lots of stuff, to be very comfortable? Even if it takes two or three trips with a sled, and pack? Perhaps I'm missing something? Not trying to ridicule here.

We need a volunteer to check him/her? for ticks. Pygmy??? Has bigger guns than me, so I don't want any trouble.
-
WAIT!!! Don't hunt there! Wait until that area gets checked out thoroughly first!!! Something just doesn't look right with that picture! Just to show how much I care, Ol Buddy, I'll take the October 1st. to the 31st shift. ...........grin.

Way to go Tacks! Gotta love those Senko's

Yeah, let me have a Beef N Cheddar with a large curly fry and a Coke, to go. Thanks! See ya tomorrow! Tell yourself you are only building up an insulation layer for hunting season!

Just picked a couple bell peppers and some green beans, from the garden last night. I love growing and eating my own food!

Happy Birthday! All the best to you sir.

Miraculously, no innocent bystanders or officers were hurt. Was it 19 rounds the officer fired before reloading? Looks like he needed every one! I'm happy he got to go home to his family.

Did some hog hunting with dogs when i lived in South Carolina, many moons ago. Good times!!! Between the snakes, gators, dogs barking, hogs squeeling, running, laughing, cursing, grabbing, rolling and dragging the hogs.......not sure if I can still hang. But would love to do it one more time!

I would have knit my shikkers! Glad the fall wasn't worse than it was! How did that thing get in there? For whatever reason, I've always held a bit of animosity towards opossums. They just look like big rats to me. Heal up and have fun in Colorado!
-
Man, that looks sweet! What a beautiful piece of art! How'd you get so much talent and I got none?.........'grampy shruggs'

Is this a sub moa gun Bill? Resistance is cracking.

I still have my red plaid coat from when I started deer hunting. But it's shrunk quite a bit since I wore it last. Was wearing just jeans, layered sweatshirts, and that coat, when I shot my first few deer. My Grampy, would just walk out in his barn clothes, and engineer hat, and shoot a deer.

And guns that shoot 650 yards!
