Will trade a private land hunt for buck in 4H for a 4H tag.

Nice tribute to an old monarch! I have much respect for the old monarchs out there, that will die of old age, and not by a hunters hand. Or the highway.

No tongue in my mouth except my own! Yuck!

How Many 5.5 Year Old Bucks Have You Killed? (and older)
grampy replied to Lawdwaz's topic in Deer Hunting
I have never had any deer aged. Pretty certain that I have killed a bunch of one and two year olds. A few 3 year olds, maybe one four year old (saw him for three years before I killed him), and never killed one five or older. But I have killed some big doe's that may have been five or more? -
Perhaps three, no younger than two. A nice buck! I have never killed a fork horn that big!

I never have a set "time" going in, on when I'll be coming out. Based on what is going on with deer activity, weather, family obligations, or what part of the season it may be. I'll think, mid morning, late morning, or all day if need be. Of course any of the above factors could change when I actually come out. But rarely do I set a "time".

Do you charge a flat rate fee for tracking? If so, what is the fee?

So are you saying when someone gets a picture of a nice buck, they must be baiting to get the picture? I don't see any evidence of baiting on the pictures posted on this thread. Why would it be suggested otherwise?

Congratulations! Those mature doe's can be every bit as challenging as mature bucks.

Very nice buck! Congratulations! Great story and pictures too!

My grandson and I did some scouting this afternoon at the farm. We found a scrape line along the big swamp. So we made a natural ground blind in the area where I killed a nice buck a few years ago. We then went to one of our set ups on a thick overgrown ridge top on the other side of the property. Temperature was in the low 70s and no deer sighted. Cooler temps are in the forcast for next weekend, hopefully the deer will be more active then! -
I too, want to comend you for doing all you could do. Doesn't sound like you rushed a bad shot. Sometimes things just don't turn out like we want them to. Unfortunately that is the part of hunting that is the hardest to deal with for an ethical hunter. But deal with it, you must. And then you must pick your self up and get back out there. Good luck.

I don't even hunt my best set up's until daytime temps are in the 40's, or lower. I won't burn out those spots before I "know" the deer will be on their feet and more active, during daylight hours.

If I go to one of those places, I give them the grumpy old man routine. Before they even lift the hood I say, "Look, I came here for an oil change and filter, right? Don't bother me with all the other crap, just oil and a filter. Understand? " Works everytime. lol...

Had five does above me on the ridge at 7:45 . No shot. About an hour later, decent 8 point below me, by the swamp but again, no shot. -
I kinda like that wallpaper ! Good luck out there Law!

Same as a lot of you, I don't get crazy about being scent free. I don't think that it's possible to be totally scent free, no matter what you do or how much money you spend. I do shower each morning before hunting with fragrance free soap and deodorant, bought on sale at W.marts. Wash my hunting clothes every other weekend. Spray down before going into the woods. Once in the woods, I do my best to keep the wind in my face or to my advantage. That works much better than any scent control I could use!

That is so nice, I'd be afraid to take it outside except for sunny days in the 60's! Good luck! Beautiful gun! -
Were you wearing gloves? Sometimes the extra bulk of wearing even thin gloves will make a difference if you have not practiced with them. Also I point my index finger down the shaft of the release, during drawing and keep it there, until I just move it to the right to trip the trigger. I'm sure you will be fine, sometimes stuff just happens! Good luck!
