  1. This is why the #1 rule of deer hunting is, has always been and always will be. Keep the wind in your face as much as possible! Quite simple really, they can't smell you, even with those "super noses" if you keep yourself up wind of them! But they can smell where you walk. Wind swirls and you have thermals to contend with. And they don't always follow the plan and come from where you think they will. So that's why we call it hunting. Their noses against our brains.
  2. One of the things I do while hunting from the ground is to grab some dirt in my hands and rub it on my outer layer and hat. Does it work? Dunno, but I figure it can't hurt and it costs nothing.
  3. Helerberg rod and gun club. Ed Noonan....Schenectady Gazette Rob Streeter.....Albany Times Union
  4. I'll admit to rolling my eyes at a few of wol 123 's posts. But he has never pushed anything on anybody here, that I've seen. Except crossbow inclusion and I support that too! He seems to be a hard working family man that likes hunting and fishing. No problem with that! Every man should have the right to believe what he wants to believe. And as long as he's not causing harm or pushing it to others, no big deal. I believe a cheap shot was taken on wol123 and the bible. JMO.
  5. All for a good cause! I knew it wouldn't be for anything "weird". $100......? Hmmmmm.......... I have an old fox skin hat? That could work for both applications......... and no rabies.
  6. I too have missed his posts and pictures. Hope all is well in wooly world.
  7. With the sudden drop in temperature, and rain, snow showers on tap, don the rain gear and get out there! I think a bunch of deer will take a dirt dive this weekend!
  8. 20 percent bedded. 45 percent standing. 35 percent walking. A couple of my favorite area's to still hunt are hemlocks along a good sized swamp and three quarters of the way up a south facing oak ridge, with a strong Northeast wind. It take total concentration, to try and see them before they see you. The more you do it, the better you'll get at picking them out. As I posted above, I'm still learning every year! And I can't stress enough,SLOW is the key. At times depending on conditions, 100 yards in an hour will be too fast! But that is a good starting point. When you are stopped, and "LOOKING" from close to far away, is when you will see them or a part of them. Everyone has their own inner clock and timing, so the more you do it, the more natural it will become to you. In this fast paced world we live in, we are geared to go,go,go. So for me it's a welcome change to take a deep breath, and "go slow"!
  9. Try cutting the licking branch off an active scrape and zip tie it to your old one.
  10. Nice bucks! Get out there and shoot one!
  11. A couple knee surgeries have slowed me down a bit. But that is the key to still hunting, SLOW! When I think I'm moving too slow, I'll move slower. I plan each step before I take it. Good balance is a help to keep movement to a minimum. Keep in the shadows and use trees and brush to hide your outline as much as possible. The sun at your back will help. The wind in your face is a must. A good binocular will help to see parts of a deer, the flick of an ear, the tips of antler, of a bedded buck. They won't always be standing! A windy day with maybe a little drizzle or light snow is perfect for still hunting. Two of my best bucks have come from hunting this way. And have been doing it for over forty years. And still learning!
  12. Hope that bow never kills another deer! Right back at ya deadbeat!
  13. All shooters! And older than 1.
  14. Really nice buck and a cool pic of the little crew! Congratulations!
  15. Barnett Raptor. With 100gr. Slick Tricks. Getting tight practice groups to 50+ yards. Should be good to go for my hunting range of 30 yards.
  16. As long as she didn't see you, she may be back. If not her, another deer might show up. Good luck!
  17. Will trade a private land hunt for buck in 4H for a 4H tag.
  18. Nice tribute to an old monarch! I have much respect for the old monarchs out there, that will die of old age, and not by a hunters hand. Or the highway.
  19. No tongue in my mouth except my own! Yuck!
  20. I have never had any deer aged. Pretty certain that I have killed a bunch of one and two year olds. A few 3 year olds, maybe one four year old (saw him for three years before I killed him), and never killed one five or older. But I have killed some big doe's that may have been five or more?
  21. Perhaps three, no younger than two. A nice buck! I have never killed a fork horn that big!
  22. I never have a set "time" going in, on when I'll be coming out. Based on what is going on with deer activity, weather, family obligations, or what part of the season it may be. I'll think, mid morning, late morning, or all day if need be. Of course any of the above factors could change when I actually come out. But rarely do I set a "time".
  23. Do you charge a flat rate fee for tracking? If so, what is the fee?
