LIVE From The Woods 2020 - Let's hear stories and see some pictures!

Hopefully, I got all my misses behind me now, at three in a row, after this mornings screw up. That makes $ 15 worth of wasted 12 ga. Hornady SST's, Not good at all, in these times of ammo scarcity. It is really going to drive up my cost per pound of venison this year. I hope late ML season goes a little better. I took a parting shot at a buck on opening day, to try and keep him out of the swamp, after he took my first shot thru the boiler room. Counting the holes in the carcass while skinning it proved that was clean miss number one. I will not be able to prove the "cleaness" of today's two misses because the culprit got away, leaving no signs of hair or blood. I really blew it because if I had only been a bit more patient, I could have had a closer, easier shot, as it was calmly feeding on a chewed up rib cage, that was just 50 yards from my horribly uncomfortable ladder stand. I first saw the coyote approach from behind, and I figured it was headed for the "bait". Rather than waiting until it was distracted and feeding, I rushed a shot as soon as I thought I could make it (#2). I sent #3 as it trotted back where it came from. Lessons learned: First, be patient and wait for a good shot, Second, that ladder stand needs a better seat and a better shooting rail. I am thankful to learn those lessons on worthless vermin, rather than good meat. -

The awesome thing about that is, I will have a buck tag again, plus an antlerless only. The only downside is that I can't get up there until Friday night. I hope there will be a good amount of snow, about 40 miles north of Lowville, at that time (more than an inch but less than a foot). -

I am 100 % sure why I am up and contemplating getting ready to go out right now: 75% about a neck roast, and 25% because my wife kicked me out of our bedroom. I have a little time yet, because it don't get legal until 7:32. I will try and be up in my closest tree stand by 7:00. It will take me about 10 minutes to get there, after I leave the back door. It looks damn cold out and it sure is nice here in front of the wood stove : -
Not only is it all clearly written in the regs books, but it is also available instantly, on-line to anyone with a computer or a smart phone. The real problem is too much booze, dope, or who knows what, and not giving a damn about the rules.

The neck roast soup that my wife made tonight was so good, that it has got me wanting another neck roast. She wants to get some sleep before church tomorrow, so she is not letting me hunt from our bedroom window. I am going to try and get out for the first hour, in my front tree stand. Hopefully, a doe will be bedded in the standing corn and get chased out quick by a buck, or come out to taste some turnips. -

No, but it is funny that you mentioned that. I told my mom that her chile was particularly good today, and tasted a little different than normal. She said she added a tablespoon of cinnamon to the pot. I always got away with the shiny silver cider cup from my blinds, where it was hidden by the three foot wall all around. It didn't work so good from the hang-on stands or from the ground however. -

Does must not like the hot cider smell. None showed up today. Two, 3.5 year old bucks have approached from downwind, while I was sipping it, over the last 4 years. The last one actually came in on two consecutive weeks. The first time, I had my cross bow hanging on a hook, and he got spooked by the shiny silver cup, as I was putting it down to grab it. I wraped the cup with black electric tape the next week, and shot him at 100 yards, on opening day of gun season. -
I am guessing 5 or 6 ipa's. On the subject of late ML season, I hope I run into my second cousin at church tomorrow. He is a DEC game warden in the Rochester area. I need to get the inside scoop on the added holiday days between Christmas and New years. It might still be a go for this year.

It is looking like teams 1 thru 3, added together, have about 1/4 as many points as team 4.

Neck-roast barley soup. Best meal yet out of that buck.

It was good. My wife's is never quite as tasty. My wife is making soup with leftovers from a venison neck roast for dinner tonight. That is usually spectacular. I will be happy if it is as good as mom's chile. -

Nothing showed up at the edge of the swamp before sundown. Ma and Pa saw a big buck walk out and feed on clover, 1/2 hour before sunset, on the other edge of the woods. I am thankful that I did not sit in my stand over there tonight. It would have pissed me off a bit to see a bigger one, in the daylight, than I tagged earlier. In 39 seasons, I have yet to experience such a temptation. Hopefully, I will make it thru tomorrow afternoon's hunt at home, without it happening. I am going to my back woods stand, where I killed my last late-season doe in 2018 on the same Sunday, after church. Before church tomorrow, it will be a couple hours watching over the turnips and standing corn from my bedroom window. -

I am back in my swamp edge hang-on for the last hour. This stand ain't comfortable enough for much longer than that anyhow. Lunch took longer than expected, with 2 bowls of mom's chile, followed by a nap, and moving some furniture around for her. -
Iy sounds like you just learned that U were being accidentally fed some bad info by kmart. Your regular season buck tag may indeed be used during the late ML season with a crossbow, bow or a ML, on an antlered or antlerless deer in all sz wmu's. I have had almost enough of chasing does myself and I can hardly wait for late ML season to get here, so I can start looking for a buck again. In fact, I am skipping the last weekend or SZ regular season, to drive 4.5 hours to the northeast where late ML/crossbow opens a week earlier. I will also have an antlerless tag that I will be able to use up there at that time (wmu 6c). Several of those ADK wmu's dont allow ant antlerless ML harvest. You got to check the regs book to see which ones.

I held out until 11:15, on the upper deck. Nothing but about a dozen grey squirrels sighted. Now I am in for lunch and my outerwear is in the drier. I will go back out to the swamp edge hang-on stand for the evening sit. -

Those were the days. Too bad we can't still do that, or at the very least, get a 3rd buck tag if we buy bows gun, and ML. Does are overrated. -
This buck owes his current position (deer heaven) to his Maker and this grunt call. I was thankful to be involved in the transaction 2 weeks ago. I can't imagine why they would not still work today, although I left mine home because I don't think they will work for does.

I moved upstairs at 7:45. The freezing rain stopped and the chair down below was a little too creaky for me. There are no blind spots up top, and a wonderful new swivel chair that I garbage picked a couple weeks ago. It don't make a sound when I turn it and is super comfortable. The woods came alive with grey squirrels at 8:00, but no signs of any deer yet. I started my 3rd cup of hot cider. I will stay here until around noon, when mom ought to have lunch ready. It is very nice out, with wind less than 5 mph and around 35 degrees. -

Doe patrol is all about comfort and convenience for me. In the last 20 years, I have killed a total of one doe, after opening day of gun season. I had planned to hit my swamp edge hang on stand this morning, where I blew a good chance on one back in 2018, on this very weekend. Two little bucks chased a doe twice around my stand that day. My firing pin froze up on the first "chip shot", and I missed her clean, on the second lap. The slight drizzle has me holed up in the lower level of my two story blind over in my parents woods. I have never killed a deer from the lower deck of this one, but did take what may have been my heaviest buck ever (43" chest girth), from up top back in 2016. My sister's house is about 400 yards to my east, and she has been seeing a doe and fawn feeding on apples near dawn, each morning this week, in an old orchard between us. I will pour my first cup of hot cider at 7:30, legal shooting time. Maybe the aroma will draw them in for a shot. I certainly am dry and comfortable anyhow, and I will be warm and toasty after I start sipping. -
If I could make the rules, for early archery deer hunting in NY southern zone, I would make traditional bow season (recurve and longbow), October 1-14. I would lump compounds in with crossbows, and allow their use from October 15 to opening day of gun.
-
I am going to give filling a dmp tag (or 4), 3 more tries in the southern zone this weekend. I am also looking forward to ML, when I will have a buck tag again. It is great that it opens up in the northern zone a week earlier. My boss just signed for 1-1/2 vacation days. I am going to use the half, get out early next Friday, and head north. The weekend after that, I will use the other day to stretch the southern zone weekend until the last Monday.
-
I respect the fact that you admit to selfish elitism as your reason to oppose the crossbow. I am quite entertained by the compound shooters who claim to oppose it because they want to preserve a tradition, etc.

Way to go Don. Chef is going to have to add more memory to his computer to add all those points onto team 4's score.
