Agreed. In fact, I like using my crossbow as a motivator. My goal is to be as proficient, if not better with my compound.
-
You see no difference because you are very proficient with your bow. I am less proficient and I think that my crossbow edges out my bow in terms of accuracy, range, etc. A few seasons ago I set my father up in a stand with my crossbow (having only shot it once before) and he made a perfect shot on a doe. I doubt he could pull back my bow, nevermind effectively kill a deer his second time shooting it. When you take the hunter's skill/proficiency out of the equation, a crossbow is more effective than an equally priced bow. Full disclosure: I hunt with both bow and crossbow and I love them both equally. That said, I feel a bit more pride in deer killed with the compound, because in my opinion, and in my hands, I feel it is more challenging.

I'm fine with the way it is now. Gives plenty of options, but maintains a unique period of time at the beginning of the season for the most challenging weapon (archery). A crossbow falls in between a bow and a gun, and the seasons reflect that. I don't trust NY state with any of our money, so I could care less about ways to provide them with more of it.

Got out for a morning sit with the crossbow before work. Very little deer movement, saw a small buck and a really small doe (possibly button buck). This good-sized doe snuck up behind me, and looped around in some heavy stuff. She popped out on the trail to my stand. She was slightly quartered to me at just over 10 yards and I tucked one behind her shoulder. When I checked the bolt, I was a little nervous because there was stomach contents, but I knew I made a good shot and there was tons of blood. I slowly peeked over the edge of the hill where she ran, and I could see a red path leading to her about 30 yards away. She weighed 133 lbs and the Rage did its job. Took out front side lung, and caught bottom of opposite lung and cut her stomach as it exited. Great to have some more meat in the freezer. I have to be careful though... I might go all season without firing a gun

That’s a Rage 2 blade... I always used Muzzys, but this season tried something new. They are devastating. Of course it helps coming 330 FPS at about 12 yards.- 10374 replies

Corned venison is delicious... I have been using Morton Tender Quick with excellent results. Boil 2 cups of water with Tender Quick (1 tablespoon per lb of venison), pickling spice, brown sugar, garlic and juniper berries (optional). Once dissolved, pour over the roast (I use a large ziplock bag) and add enough cold water to fully cover the meat. Let it sit in the fridge for at least a week; then rinse and simmer for a few hours until it is done to your liking. (Waiting is the toughest part of this recipe)

Correct. And if a young hunter or someone with limited time/access chooses to legally take that young buck, we should all share in their happiness from a successful hunt.
-
Under current regs... ML + Bow = 1 buck
-
If they are shooting 3 bucks, they’re not doing it legally.

7 point (8 with broken brow tine) from 8H I got last weekend. Area has good nutrition and genetics. Buck weighed 148 field dressed. I’m assuming it’s a healthy 2.5 year old. Do the teeth agree?? (I don’t know much about deer teeth)

Ha! Actually that picture was taken less than 2 miles away from you!

Sweet, untouchable buck... will die of old age if he stays in that area. If he wanders and someone gets him, show us pics!!

Bucks are definitely moving during the day in 8H. This big suburban boy was chasing a doe through a Penfield neighborhood last week.
