I have carried both and cant see anything in the regulations that makes it illegal. I prefer to use bow/crossbow if I can... less chance of destroying meat.

Who will be on the crossbow bandwagon tomorrow morning?
johnplav replied to ApexerER's topic in CrossBow Hunting
Ill be out for my second season. If its your first time using a crossbow, don't forget everything you have learned using a vertical bow. Hunting tactics, blood trails, and method of death remain the same. Continue to be aware of your shot limitations. Ill be honest, for most people, a crossbow should lead to better results, but please dont push it and let it lead to more injured deer. Good luck! -
Stick with using Omni-nocks, and you will be very happy with your Wicked Ridge.

Rain, wind, possibly disappearing blood trails, wife wants to hang out, I have a cold... But Ill still be in the woods all weekend, Cant wait! Good luck everyone.

Apexer is right, I started bowhunting 3 years ago simply to gain hunting access. Havent looked back since.

We coat them with BBQ rub 1 cup sea salt 1 cup brown or white sugar 1 cup sweet paprika 1/2 to 1 cup coarsely ground or cracked black peppercorns 3 tablespoons granulated garlic powder 3 tablespoons granulated onion powder 1 tablespoon celery seed Roast in the oven for about an hour They are tough but delicious, we usually cook them when we are processing a deer or making sausage Iv seen recipes where you smoke them or use the pressure cooker, but I dont know if the end product would be worth all that trouble

Trail cam picture from last week in 8H. Very unique rack, deer seems otherwise healthy. Is it late to still be in velvet? Other bucks in the area are bone.

Muzzy MX-3 3-blade for bow Carbon Express Shuriken for crossbow Both have performed excellent, havent had reason to experiment with others

Haaa! Good call pigpaul. Sounds like a great trip.

Well Done Jeremy. Brand new bows are great, but never underestimate a cheap (or free!) used. I bought an old Hoyt for $150 about 5 years ago. My plan was to use it for a year and then upgrade if I enjoyed bowhunting. Well, guess what, I'm still happy with it and use it to take at least 2 deer each season.

I have a wicked ridge invader and I carry it cocked without a bolt loaded. It is designed so that it is impossible to dry fire. Also, I use a Quake Claw sling which has enough grip to work with the crossbow.

Another good way to get access to land is to share. If you have some land to hunt, let a friend of a friend hunt it. Perhaps they will let you on theirs.

Steve Rinella has good advice in his Complete guide to hunting book... In addition to offering help on the land, another good way to start hunting deer on a property would be to first inquire about hunting small game. A landowner may be more open to you popping a few squirrels or rabbit with a .22. Once they see you are responsible (and helpful), they will be more likely to allow deer hunting. Before anyone pounces... I know bow hunting for deer is probably safer and less disturbing than squirrel hunting with a .22... but lots of landowners do not.

Ill only shoot a porcupine if they are likely to become an issue. We had a cow get a face full of quills... not an easy task removing them. Wish I would've got to that porcupine first to avoid a real headache.

Heart gets trimmed up and pan fried as soon as possible. Liver gets cooked up with bacon and onions for sandwiches. Organ meat is best fresh, but isnt too bad frozen if its a young deer. I havent experimented with any other organs; brains, kidneys, etc.

I use a sling and tend to carry it upside down (facing the ground) Its more comfortable that way, although still awkward compared to a gun.

A .223 with the correct ammo, and a well placed shot is very effective on most NY whitetail. Although I prefer a different gun, I would not hesitate to use one of mine. Like any weapon you may choose, the shot (distance, deer position, etc.) needs to match the capabilities of the weapon, and the hunter. I for one am glad that NY state doesn't limit the use of .223, especially considering the disdain our legislators seem to have toward the AR platform. Lets be thankful we can have this discussion.

Correct. Hunting/trapping seasons and areas coincide with each other.

Tell your friend to go somewhere else and buy/enjoy the new gun. Lever action has nothing to do with new regulations. And even semi-auto .22s with tube magazine are OK (Marlin model 60, etc)

Time to do some predator control
johnplav replied to Deerthug's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Is a 10 round magazine OK while hunting coyotes? I know for deer hunting, you need to use 5 round magazines in an auto-loading rifle. -
Interesting points about pistol permit system. I have a Contender and my permit says ".44/.22" I added the gun in Washington County. They listed my largest barrel (.44 mag) and smallest (.22 LR). According to them my permit was good for those barrels, and anything in between. I'm sure every county handles it differently. The system is a joke... but of course, not as bad as the SAFE Act.

On the last day of SZ regular season, I was hunting in 8H and took a buck that had 1 antler. I'm curious what you guys think. Dec 13 definitely seems early for a buck to be shedding antlers. Could it have been knocked off in a fight with a bigger buck? Or could the warm weather trigger some weird hormone reaction causing him to drop an antler? I'm pretty sure I have a picture of him when he had both antlers. His skull looked normal and healthy, like it was shed naturally. And the remaining antler was still very much attached to the skull. Either way, he was a good sized deer, and my freezer is full. His tall 2 point antler joined my collection of sheds, but with a lot more meaning attached to it.
