It is a statistical fact men are engaged in more stupid crap like that. Look on youtube for videos of "highway surfing" (seriously check this one out) and "car jumping" and "skyscraper free climb" and all that. Primarily young men.

Yesterday was a bust and I don't understand why. I know a spot on public land that has historically had deer come by when I'm in stand more than half the time. So I sat a guy there. I then went to another spot which is pretty much textbook of where you should go (and last year I took a deer from it). We sat for a few hours and saw nothing. We then just wanted to make sure the local deer population hadn't all flown away, so we walked around a perfect bedding area, packed to the brim with trails (and scat), all in and through it and didn't even kick one up. I know deer move more with the wind, according to studies, but my only explanation is that the wind completely messed them up yesterday for me and changed their patterns entirely. Of course, I saw a bunch on the side of the road last night driving the kids around. -

Me and another guy got into two nice spots by dawn, and even quite protected from wind but no movement yet. Pretty chilly out here. Was hoping all the shotgunners on this land would kick some deer our way but no luck yet. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

At least the rain has stopped. Walking out into dark woods before sunrise when it is actively raining is kind of a line for me so I just slept in instead. I could picture some deer movement later. It is certainly cold out there. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

I am never so lucky to be near deer that I am not trying to spear! With one exception last week and he came in and out so fast I couldn't get my phone out. -

Got back from my soaked walk in the rain. A bedded dear saw me and gently ran off when I got close. I also confirmed my waterproof boots are 100% not waterproof anymore. -

ha, the longer I sit at this laptop the less enticing this weather looks. Gonna do it, will go to a close property though just so I can say I did. Won't make a huge effort out of it. Will move slow, should be nice being "silent" in the woods. -

It is raining quite hard and will be all day. Should I try my luck at still hunting again? I know it is easy to say yes for another person but it is a bit miserable out there. Edit: oh why not. Weather is crap maybe I will get lucky. And at least I can feel badass while trying. Mid-day still hunting in rain, what could be easier? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
They do that crap in ottawa as well. Nothing says pitiful snow clearing budget like clearing a very major thoroughfare with landscaping equipment. You guys ought to consider newfoundland with its moose, though getting the meat back is going to be a real problem.

Yes this merely gives him more attention. Of course anybody with damning information and half a brain today has a dead man's switch set to release information regardless of their ability to manually do it. -
Welcome! I'm also the first in my family since maybe the 19th century to hunt (I'm assuming some ancestor did). My first 20-25 times out deer hunting were all alone (first with another person will be this weekend in fact). Lots of guides online on what to pack. One of the largest surprises to me actually was how damned hard it is to drag deer. It probably doesn't help that the spot I hunt is significantly lower than my car so that the drag is 90% uphill. Public land it really depends where you are. Some is pressured, but much of it is not, at least in bow season (I haven't tried in gun yet). Actually I will give one pointer: Bring a machete. It adds a few pounds but I keep one on my pack permanently now. Some of the brush is quite literally, no exaggeration, just impassable without a machete. If a deer runs into it and you don't have one, you can't retrieve it. Where are you located? Some people are willing to help out locally in person.

Sounds pretty fun. Tracking & stalking is truly hunting.

Looks absolutely terrible. What a junk bunch of weather. It was mid july weather this past tuesday and now we lose more days to rain! Saturday and sunday forecasts are atrocious.

Now that. That is just funny. Anyway, the officer called at 10:30 and the deer was still there. He said I could come pick it up. Got there, turned out it was in fact a button buck and light enough that I could quite easily pick it up all at once (on my camera I thought it was a half decent sized doe lol). I thought it might be a waste of money and brought it to a butcher who agreed it's not worth the processing fee; said 15 lbs meat out of it. Think I did my due diligence on this one. -

I can see you know your fairport! Behind the house is a field, strangely in the middle of the town. Also another 50 acres (not sure if field is part of that) of forest within which a couple of houses exist I think. If it were more discreet I would have dealt with it myself. Hopefully DEC got to it soon after I left. Waited for 20 min but couldn't wait any longer. -
Those were pretty good.

Yes and yes, but t is private property along s main road and the deer is right next to a couple of houses so I really can't do anything about it--particularly now with DEC on its way (still not here yet). You can see the deer in front of the bush here at the house with the fence. -

Was driving in fairport just now and saw a deer laying in somebody's yard off the street. Walked up to it and turns out it has a broken leg, so now a DEC officer has been dispatched. Watching it now just laying there 60 yards away it can't move. Wondering what the dec response time will be. At least I saw it so it wouldn't have to lay here for God knows how long. I rarely see people on state land. If I ever do find myself wanting to hunt where some guy is I would just move onto a new section so that we aren't on each other's toes and would hope they would do the same. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Successfully fighting off a bear with a knife is extremely low on my list of things I'm confident I could accomplish and extremely high on my list of things I never want to try. Hunt with a pump or semi shotgun or an AR chambered in 308 and you'll have no problem taking down any charging bear

I don't see a hard and fast rule here. Hunting in the rain increases the odds of not recovering, there is no doubt about it. But lots of what we do does the same thing. Bowhunting for example. If we all hunted with slug guns and kept our shots to bow distances our recovery rates would be through the roof. A good double-lung is going to take a deer out fast, but even a hundred yards in heavy brush if you have a fairly good idea of where it is could be a real challenge to find. I think if you're in woods with lots of visibility it changes the calculation vs woods with heavy brush and thorns everywhere--the kind that when you're on the ground you can't see more than 10 yards and need a machete to get anywhere.

Yep mine has a slide. Dang it I am gonna buy some rattlers.
