  1. And to think not only do some people not have that extra strap but they also don't even wear a harness!
  2. Would not want to drag that beast out of the woods. He looks very heavy.
  3. The tragedy of the commons is at play, though. On a case by case basis shooting one buck doesn't impact anything measurably; only if everyone holds off will you see the older bucks. And in the case of somebody who doesn't control a large tract of land (e.g. public), avoiding shooting a particular buck because you hope to see the same one two years later is highly optimistic.
  4. Looks nice. Was me last year. Fought it for a few years but finally lost. And the money we saved by me laying an entire level of the house in flooring with dozens and dozens of cuts around all the corners and hallway and then installing fresh molding along the bottom just found its way into new furniture anyway.
  5. I've seen guys at the range hitting all kinds of crap with their arrows and I'm pretty sure they don't check them. If I hit anything but foam with mine I am checking each arrow carefully with a full bending and rolling along its length. A few weeks ago I slid an arrow right in next to another and the one that was hit looked extremely good until I checked it and realized it had formed a hairline split along a few inches. Hard to see at first. Into the trash it went.
  6. Hope you get better soon. Bad way to start the season off but you should be back before it's over
  7. First day ever hunting last year, with a bow on public land I had not scouted, I walked up on a deer to within 25 yards. It was feeding and never knew I was there. It was fairly windy and though there was a lot of scrunching leaves as I walked, I crested a small hill and saw the deer before it saw me. I was lucky enough at this moment to have a large tree between me and the deer. I moved to position them between us and I was able to move closer to it. I was making noise, but as the deer was looking up toward the noise all it saw was the tree. I got as close to the tree as I could and the deer presented a beautiful broadside shot. I missed and hit a tree. My avatar pic is the miss. As I said, first day ever and I didn't range it properly at all; thought it was further. I then spent another dozen days trying to replicate this. I spooked many, many deer, often getting close enough for a shot but I didn't know they were there until they jumped out of their cover snorting and running. I believe now what happened that first day was so unbelievably rare: randomly walking up on a deer while it is looking away while the wind is making a lot of forest noise and there is also a hill perfectly between us to hide my initial approach and then a large tree between us to let me get closer. It took me too long to appreciate how unusual it was, hence all the time trying to replicate. Finally learned my lesson and bought a tree stand and set it in a good area. Four of the last five days hunting (four last year, one this year) I've had shot on deer from that stand. Still hunting is hard! If you don't have an arrow nocked make sure that nocking one is not loud.
  8. Regardless of what it is worth used, though, you can go to 60xstrings and get yourself one for $80 probably (also they have promo codes so look around to get a bit off), or you can go to the store and pay $300-350 for an entry level bow. A new entry level is probably better, but it's still 3X the cost or more! If you are willing to do it yourself it's a no brainer.
  9. String is compromised. If you think it will fail, replace before it pops. Else damage to you or how can happen. Although it is definitely weaker, how much weaker is it? What percentage of strands are left? I don't know how much leeway strings have but I bet they are way, way stronger than they need to be. At the least keep a close eye on it as it may start to unwind. Don't get a new bow because of a new string need
  10. Yep. You hit a whitetail deer in a car and odds are it bounces off and causes a nice bit of vehicle damage. Now jack it up a few feet higher so its body is at passenger level, increase its weight by 6X, and try again. Adult male moose are 1000 lbs+, so they end up crashing into the cabin. Newfoundland has 120,000 moose and tons of accidents each year.
  11. 42 yards is a long shot (for some it's unequivocally too far, but not all). The close one under the stand, what is he waiting, for an elk? That thing looked huge! I guess if he's got a ton of great bucks in that area and no pressure that must change the calculation.
  12. That sucks I wonder if there is a mount for these that could go on your left wrist. That would fix the hat-brim-weight issue mentioned above and take out most of the jolting issue from the bow. If the camera was mounted high up the left forearm jutting out to the side it wouldn't get in the way of anything. I see on amazon there are some wrist mounts. You'd have to rotate the video in post processing but I think it could be an option. Ideally you'd have a bunch of still cameras around your tree stand but it gets too much of a hassle to manage it all. In a few years they'll be selling new "video heads". Broadheads with a tiny camera in them.
  13. I bring a spare arrow in whenever I need one cut Since they are owned by the same entity, the reward cards work at dicks or field and stream and as you said they will always price match. F&S here is across the street from dicks. Funny thing is that dicks has a smaller gun department but always 1-2 guys behind the counter easy to see.
  14. Despite the forecast all week, yesterday morning was great in my area and this mornging looks excellent, also bucking the forecast. Woke up and it had rained but not now, nice sunrise with some mist. I'm not out there currently.
  15. Why you do the same thing she does when she wants new flooring. Press it. It might even take you a year or two but eventually you can wear the other party down
  16. Bad is kind. I think they have one person who works 20 minutes/day in that department. Lots of guns, nobody to sell them. I like the archery department and never have to wait too long to get arrows cut. I just enjoy walking around the store and love the animal display they have. It's just a really nice store to be in. I am on their mailing list and find their prices sometimes very good-they have a lot of sales.
  17. I learned last year I do the same thing. I learned it when I spent over a grand on hunting equipment and then we "needed" new furniture. Which cost a lot more than the hunting gear. So that new bow you like for $500 might cost you $2k when all is said and done!
  18. Get a lighted nock and take the vid again it will be amazing. It really livens up the slow motion vid.
  19. I assume a modern how doesn't really have any parts that can rust...? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. 8F Something is definitely whack with this thread, could be tapatalk I'm seeing a ton of repeat posts (including from me).
