Nice looking dogs, I used hunt rabbits with beagle hounds when I was a kid. I miss it, lotta fun. I take my terrier out with me in the woods , she wants to kill chipmunks squirrels etc. she's very prey driven. She even got a rabbit once but I got it out of her mouth before she did any damage. When I travel to a hunting location (out of state or country ) I always bring a second gun and on two occasions that decision saved my hunt. As far as two weapons in woods I only carry one. I have shot both iron sights and scope. I started hunting with an open sight savage bolt action 30/30 and it was fine. As I began hunting other types of game in other areas in North America I became more accustomed to scopes. My main reason for scopes is that I can see my target and what's in my path to the target more clear than my eyes. Branches, brush , etc that I would not see with open sights. Didn't hunt yesterday, but I finished all our stands before I head to Georgia in a week or so. Saw the same two little bucks a basket 6 and a forkie, that I saw last week while working in woods. Will head up Tuesday night and finish work on my sons stand Wednesday. I've been way behind this season with work and family commitments. Probably won't hunt this trip but will get all of our stands ready to go for my nephews youth hunt Columbus weekend . I'll be heading to Georgia to hunt my lease end of month. Then hit the woods here in November. Saw a few young bucks 4-6 pt on property, see if nephew can connect. He shot an 8 pt last youth season so he's gonna have a tough time beating that this year. For what it's worth 2 days ago I was building a wood stand with my nephew, sawing, using a screw gun, talking etc. I was standing on the platform we just built and there walking @25 yds to my left a nice young 6 pt. so I think it doesn't much matter. I hunt in 4-0 and have had a/r for several years now. I will say the hunting has improved. When I was first hunting this area in the early 1970s and for the 80s and 90s if someone shot an 8 pt it was news. I'm seeing more bucks and hearing less shooting. The last 4 years my family (8 hunters - kids grandkids etc.) we've taken at least one 8 pt a year some years two. And during bow season I'm noticing bigger bucks on there feet searching. Now it's not deer paradise where I hunt-but it has improved. The first year of a/r not one of us shot a buck all the spikes n 4 walked but since then it has improved. Jut my 2 pennies.
