  1. Whats your approach when the snow sticks to the shovel?
  2. Doesn't sound corny at all. We really have amazing outdoor recreation options here.
  3. right outside of cooperstown,so 4+ hrs from the city,5 hrs to buffalo. Albany is only 1.5 hrs. This area is centrally located but not close to anything, bizarre.
  4. Too far for me..I would like to make one,but it seems being centrally located gets you nothing as far a GTGs go. We should have one in CNY sometime...
  5. I know, but that is not how it works. It is probably for the best,or I would be out there all day everyday. I get just a tad obsessed sometimes.
  6. I am considering going heavier on my arrows as well, and gettingng the magnus. This year i was afraid of the scapula and hit both my deer further back than what would have been ideal. I got both of them, but not as clean as i and they would have liked. Another thing is getting into saddle hunting for a significantly lighter set up. My summit climber keeps me from going back and or checking things out along the way. And i want to scout state land around me as i think the pressure during bow season is very light on that, and i want to hunt where there are good bucks around. Between my 30 acres and my buddies 300 i can count all the rubs i found this year on two hands and i covered a lot of ground. There was at least one nice buck around, but i think the buck doe ratio is so skewed that the bucks are barely competing for does because everyone gets one or ten. I have been shooting does for years, but i dont think i am making a difference.
  7. I guess i had better order my new saddle and whatever climbing system i will use so i can get a lot practice in before the next season is here. That will be my big motivation for the next one, mobility. I am planning on exploring some stateland and the far corners of my property and my buddies 300 acres.
  8. I never got a buck either this year. Very few sightings, but i did get two does with the bow. So no tag soup, phew. I did have a good season, didn't get out as much as i would like but i never do. My job and wife might have something to do with that. I am pretty content but looking forward to a new climbing set up next year,i will pull the trigger on a saddle.
  9. Wasnt that big buck the one that got hit by a car last month? I was out all day doing drives with only two friends. We bumped a lot of deer but i didn't get a shot i liked. I am so glad i got two does with the bow,so decent season for me.
  10. I dont know where you hunt otto, but use the terrain to your advantage. Hide inside a draw and pop over the edge with just your head and scan for a long time. Same with a ridge. Zig zag from one side to the other so you come out 100 to 200 yds from the last spot where you scanned the area below.
  11. I still hunted along my swamp edge and manged to walk up on two does, even though the snow underneath the fresh snow was crunchy. I went super slow, and as i crested a rise i saw a tail go down, not 40 yds from me. I froze and checked for more deer. There were at least two,and i was trying to pick out the bigger one,had the wind in my face as predicted until it completely switched and blew towards them. That was the end of that encounter. About 1/2 hr later i had move further along and saw a deer coming down the hill through dense brush. I thought there were two again, but i lost the one. The other came to 20 yds after a lot of zig zagging and turned out to be a fawn. Pass. Not a bad day,but nothing to show for. Tomorrow i am getting together with a group of friends and we will do some drives, first time this year for me.
  12. I just finished cleaning my MZ. Now i am waiting for it to cool down again outside, then i will put the fresh powder and sabot in and head out. The powder i had in there for 5 weeks looked just fine,i could have went with that but wanted to make sure the gun goes boom when/if I squeeze the trigger.
  13. I guess i had better reload my MZ,it has been loaded sonce the gun opener, that seems like a little too long...
  14. I will be sending good juju your way rob,i will be out today too looking for a late score. I haven't gotten a deer since bow season, one more would be nice. But I rather see you get one, come on karma!
  15. Fresh snow in 4F. I took care of a friends oxen and horse this a.m.,about 4 miles from my house. I did not see a single deer on their feet. They may be feeding mid day today...
  16. I am rooting for you Rob,you definetely deserve a crack at one,or two,or three
  17. My season was/is about average. I focus on bowhunting for the most part,i have only been out a few times with the gun. It does seem there are less people out and about on my hill than in previous years. And conditions have been not great for still hunting, only a few weekdays were good for that,my favorite way to hunt. I only saw three bucks during that time,a fourpoint,a spike and another bigger one that got a haircut from me. I nicked him,so i am not going to pursue a career in that field. So buck sightings were down for me,i usually see more.
  18. Good luck,i am considering taking my bow out for a late chance, but the deer seem pretty spooky here on my hill. It would be sweet to get one with a bow this late in the season though. I really hope you connect.
  19. Several years ago i was posted when we did a drive with some friends. Some deer came out and walked past me at 50 yds. I only had a buck tag,and i saw the first one was a doe. The next two looked like fawns behind her,so i relaxed. Turned out the third deer was a six point 1.5 year old,he looked like a baby behind that doe. Biggest one i have ever seen
  20. I saw a doe a few hrs ago just 150 yds from my driveway,so i got dressed and went after her. I snuck along the road a bit and the into the woods and one turned into three. I watched them feed for a bit and then they all bedded down, about 90 yds away. I was getting chilled,it was still drizzling here and tried to move to get a more open lane, but mama deer saw me and they took off. Oh well, still time left...
  21. Good luck with the surgery. I had a torn ACL for over three years before i got it fixed,it doesn't put you out of comission entirely, especially if your meniscus is ok and you have some muscles in your leg. Be a good boy and do the rehab diligently.
  22. It seems odd to me that you never get two holes. I exclusively hunt with a MZ and used pellets and now bh209 and always get two holes. The gun should have enough umph out to 150 at the least. Like @turkeyfeathers said, even further if you know the bullet drop. I wonder if you hit low and missed the vitals.
  23. do you use breech plug lube on the threads before storing it? Highly recommended.
