Why it’s high time to make peace with crossbow hunting
chas0218 replied to tughillmcd's topic in CrossBow Hunting
I think this guy antagonizes more than uptown did. Wait....maybe it's the same person just new name. -
Thanks guys, took a little bit of work to get her up there by myself. Luckily I got out of the Nick Friday mess. I was really hoping to shoot something. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

I went up to my parents for thanksgiving a day early with hopes of bagging a doe for the freezer. There are quite a few nice bucks running around and wouldn't mind one of them but didn't have the time to try and pursue one. I sat in my usual doe spots with nothing to show except a 1.5 y.o. 4 point. There is still standing corn on this one field around 70 acres worth. After sitting a whole day and thanksgiving morning not seeing a thing I made the decision to sit on the corn field hedgerow. Just as I was packing up (had to make it back to go with the wife black Friday shopping) I heard the corn rustling and sure enough a doe pops out. Just as I settle the crosshairs on it I notice another deer behind her even bigger. I change up and take the shot, the .243 did it's job. This is my personal best doe dressed 136lbs. I managed to get some heat and meat for the family over Thanksgiving. I hope everyone enjoyed their thanksgiving. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

Tried the old spot and stalk on some deer I saw early this morning they moved by the time I crested the hill and busted me. Not looking good for me this season. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

Hey you're claiming 70 different deer in one sit and only 2 being shooters the next year.
-
When was the first shot you heard this year? Mine was 6:12 A.M. using my 40mm objective on my scope I looked around guess what I couldn't make out the tree in front of my stand looking through my scope. So that means someone used a light or shot at the deer shaped blob in front of them. Do you think that same person would do that not being able to see if it was a legal buck? Absolutely Not because they not only could get busted for shooting before sunrise but also dinged for illegal buck. So the common sense thing of yeah they would have to actually wait to see what the hell they are shooting at meaning it is more light and they can actually see further than 20 yards in the woods. So yeah it would be safer, I have seen your posts and you don't lack the common sense to connect it all.

Most don't forget but like I mentioned you have one heck of a poaching problem or you have NY's entire population of coyotes in the cat skills. There is no way that only legal bucks are targeted by diseases/sickness, or motor vehicles. To see 70 deer on one property and have 1 or 2 shooters each year isn't going to happen no matter where you are. Someone is using the fudge factor like DEC when counting 70 deer. They don't just up and vanish. I'm not going to comment on your hunting strategies because I don't know anything about you or your crew. So i can't help in that aspect but I know when I don't see deer generally I move to a different location. We have 220 acres and see on average 20-30 different deer and this is in central NY in Wayne county with our property being 40/60 ag fields to woods. That being said in your Catskill area you are claiming to have higher population densities than areas that are considered prime habitat which the Catskills or ADK are not.

So I guess my question is then where are these 1.5 year old deer going if there are that many. I'm sorry things don't add up either you have a ridiculous number of poachers or you have the worse infestation of predators. If there are that many deer then you should have shooters.
-
How many boone and crocket have you seen that are 200lbs. I'm sorry but I'm not buying his argument unless he is hunting high fence deer, and I still don't see many on those TV shows that are 200lbs. I know lots of guys that hunt in WNY where they have tons of Ag fields for these deer and the 200 pounders are few and far between.
-
So where you hunt has AR's how many bucks do you see that you can't shoot each season? How many hunt that same property? How many DMP do you get to use on that same property?
-
Don't know only have killed the ones that have 10 points. There are several of us that practice AR's on a total of 400 acres. One guy shoots 8 points and better but has never shot a 10. I know why he has never shot a 10 point, because he shoots the first 8 point that walks in front of him. He complains all the time he never gets a 10. I have nothing against him and just happy he passes all the small bucks. In the past 9 years we have had the AR's on our property we have never had an 8 point that didn't grow into a 10. The neighbor kid killed a 10 point this year that had 6 on one side and 4 on the other complete stud of a buck and there were 2 other 10's running around bigger than his. Basically an exact copy of the one pictured below was killed this year.

can you explain why hunters would want to shorten gun season?
chas0218 replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in Deer Hunting
In 8F last year the last buck to drop his antlers was the end of March. In 8X there wasn't a buck I saw on camera or in person that head gear past Jan. -
Depends on the area. I have saw on our property a bunch of 100" 2.5 year old 8 points. If you only shot deer in my area that have a live weight of 200lbs. you would never shoot a deer let alone a buck. We have practiced a type of AR's on our property since 2008 and have killed a number of quality mature whitetails that were 4.5 years old or older and 10 points (10 point rule on the property). None of those deer were close to 200lbs. live weight maybe 180lbs. with the biggest at 5.5 years old and 160" 10 point. The weight of a deer doesn't dictate its age and not many guys can accurately estimate a deer's live weight compared to counting antler points. I can't tell you how many times people say a deer weighs 200lbs. and it doesn't make 160lbs. I have seen deer for western NY that are pushing 200lbs. and only 2.5 years old.

Yeah he loves it. All he talks about is deer. Every night we sit and watch a hunting show together he and my 8 month old are glued to it. I gave my 2 year old my old grunt tube and he walks around the house with a made up gun grunting and going "bang! Me shot deer!" it's really a sight to see.

yup neck for me.

You hear about the guy that whacked a monster buck on state property in Middlesex in the bottom of the valley? Shot from the road within 500' of a house, DEC was on scene along with police wondering if he got to keep the deer. There were a lot of guys hunting that deer that were upset that someone would pull that. Only asking because I thought you were close to the Middlesex area.

So yesterday I had to play adult and go to work, the back story here is I took a shot at a nice 120" 8 point during archery hit him in the back strap after blasting a twig about the size of a BBQ skewer. Long story short he is still walking around with a small slice in his back. Felt like crap but saw the hit was really high after he bounded off 50 yards and stood. Well I had a less than great picture of a buck in velvet larger than that 8 point and finally got him on camera about a week and half ago. Real nice 140" 8 point, a real monster of an 8. So yesterday my father in law stayed overnight to watch his football game because he doesn't have any TV at his hunting property. Well he left last morning about 6:10 am about 5 minutes later back in the driveway he came running in the house hysterical "He's out there!!" Just so you know he wasn't talking about bigfoot but big 8. He was stumbling over his words he couldn't believe how big he is yadda yadda. So anyway long story short I didn't call into work and like a good little adult went to the ole grind and stuck it out. I stayed the whole day at work with pictures of him running around the neighbor's field as I watched thru binoculars that morning from my son's bedroom window. He is surely a nice deer and the pictures below don't do him justice. His body is so big it makes the rack look small. I'm hoping I can seal the deal on him this week but we will see. The pictures below were taken last day of bow season when I contemplated taking the day off to do an all day hunt. If you look close in the background the blue rope is my haul line for my tree stand. His days are numbered and I really hope if I don't get him no one else does. I can only imagine if he makes it through another season how big he will be. Enjoy some deer porn. I will say that my father in law doesn't exaggerate and said the rack stands about 2' off his head.

That is right down the street from my house. You know any of the Shelleys that is who we bought the house from. Also good friends with Rusty that went there.

Haven't made it out yet we are waiting for this week when we go home to visit my family for Thanksgiving. Looking like it might not happen with everyone's schedule but I'm trying! He will make it out with me at some point but with all the the festivities on both sides I'll be lucky to get out and whack anything up there.
-
Yeah we both have ear muffs that I use and always have the barrel out of the shack. He has sighted my guns in with me he even got to shoot the pellet gun even though he didn't hit the target. I'm not looking for him to shoot the deer I just want him to get out there with me. He was really good during bow season except he was terrible at moving slow. haha we got picked out by some doe about 80 yards out but he got to watch them for a solid 5 minutes. Before a 4 point chased them off. He had the whisper part down just not moving slow. The "shooting shack" as we call it is an 8'x8' enclosure elevated about 20' off the ground. We have shot a lot of deer out of it and generally the deer don't mind it when you're up there moving around too much.

What Could or Possibly Also May Be in your Hunting Area
chas0218 replied to nobody's topic in General Hunting
Blonde bear...Bear can go up a hill better than any other animal being their front legs are shorter than their back. Before you say there aren't bear in your area I have seen bear while chopping fields in 8F north of Newark and when I worked at Cornell Co-op in Geneva mowing orchards. -
Yesterday before work my father in law was headed out back to his hunting property in middlesex. He left then 5 minutes later came back running in the door, "he is out there!" He was hysterical, he saw the big 8 I was hunting most of bow season. To his disbelief it was all of 140" well this deer was on someone else's property and I do not trespass so we watched from a far (my sons upstairs window). I come home last night to someone parked on the side of the road in front of my property, and a new popup blind out in the middle of this field. He is easily within 200' of 2 houses one on each side so I wasn't real sure what he had planned. Anyway as I walked down to get the mail I decided to walk towards the car and see what I think is the land was the landowner talking loudly and within 30 minutes the blind was gone as was the car. The guy was back in the hedgerow when the guy in the truck was looking for him. Looks like I wasn't the only to see the deer that morning as there were a ton of brake lights when he was in the field chasing a doe. I can't stand the idiots that come out of the woodwork when gun season comes around. I like to think we are all hunters and are respectful of boundaries but this was a classic case of just downright disrespect of someone's property. I post my land tight and after 1 trespass the state cops are called. I don't screw around anymore. Your property? I would be calling the lady out and sending her on her merry way. I mean if your hunt is already screwed you could touch off the gun just to prove a point. Obviously not towards her or anyone else.

Bowhunters- PLEASE Don't Take Bad Shots- See Picture
chas0218 replied to CharlieNY's topic in Bow Hunting
Head shot gone bad? I don't know of an archery hunter that has ever taken a deer with a head shot and a bow. By the look of things it is a deflected shot. I had one of those this year at 20 yards broadside slight quartering towards. I couldn't figure out what happened I was aiming just behind the shoulder about half way up. I ended up whacking a twig about the same size as a BBQ skewer and the arrow went in about 5 inches of backstrap. He bled good but dried up in 50 yards, I have trail cam pictures of him with the hit. Sucks he is a nice 115" 8 point. -
I was thinking the same, definitely what you wouldn't expect from that cartridge.

Pictures or it didn't happen.
