Voting for a Savage (several inexpensive models to choose from with accu-triggers) chambered in 7mm-08. I have several Savages and they are all shooters. My wife has a Ruger American in 7mm-08 and I can say the deer don't like it one bit. The last two she shot dropped in place, but I'm just partial to Savages.

If crossbows were to be fully included in the full archery season, I'll admit that I'd probably never pick up a vertical bow again.

I agree with the whole "coddling kids" today thing, but as far as our sport goes, we are a dying breed, and we need to do what we can to interest youth into the sport. Without new hunters injected into the sport, there will be less and less of us until we are an inconsequential number to worry about, and hunting will be legislated out of existence. I'm trying to get my grandson into the sport. He's 11, into playing sports big-time, and when he's in high school, he'll have no time for hunting. I'm hoping to interest him enough that he comes back to it after his high school and college sports days are over. This year, on the Friday after Thanksgiving, we rode the ATVs from the garage to the tower stand, turned the heater on for a bit, sent some texts on his ipod, and a little before last light, I shot a doe with a .270, using the window sill for a rest while he "coached" the shot. Then we ATV'd back to the house and cooked venison on the grill while watching college football on satellite TV. Was this hunting? I call it shooting and having a good time. He loved it. He loved riding the ATVs, he loved hanging out in the shooting house, and he loved the whole shot/field dress/recovery aspect. He especially loves eating venison steaks - lol. If I would have "made it difficult", "challenged" him, and made him put in more "time and effort", I can guarantee he'd hate it and not want to do it anymore. As it is now, he talks about us hunting together in the future and tells his friends how him and Grampa always get a deer. I don't know how other kids are, but I know how he is and suspect most kids today are similar. BTW, he wants to shoot my crossbow. Because it's cool. It is actually. ps, his smile in the pic is genuine.

Neighbor down the road is 88 and hunted with a crossbow this year. He didn't shoot one, but trudged out there a few days of the two week season. He used to be a big bowhunter, but hasn't bowhunted in several years. I'm not about to tell him to man up.

Went to see Jim @Hitching post meats in Howard yesterday to drop off a doe. Nice guy, and nice, clean little shop he is expanding. Got a super fast turnaround and a nice price. Jim, I'm being picky with a particular buck this year, but if I should get him, I'll bring him over to you! Thanks again!

You know, I never remember to say "bolt". I almost always call it an arrow. I pretty much never say crossbow either. I usually just refer to it as a bow.

I think that will happen sooner rather than later. I think after the 2019 legislative session begins, the next mass shooting incident will bring on Safe V2.

Date night in the deer blind with my wife last night. Saw 14 does, a small 8, and a small 6 pointer. Watched 2 fawns chase each other around and play for 10 minutes or so. We didn't bother any of them.

We live on 86 acres and predominantly hunt there. Although we haven't owned it all for that long, this was our 30th year hunting this ground. Also have permission on adjoining properties. 52 to the south, 50 to the west and 90 to the north although that's all corn field. To the east we border 115 acres that are landlocked and no one has access to. We and its surrounding property owners treat it as a sanctuary.
