Same here! Do it while he's gutting. Can you imagine the look on his face when he's arms deep in a poached deer carcass and looks toward the road to see his car leaving and stranding him at the scene of the crime? Remember, you're not stealing it, just moving it for him. 2-3 miles down the road.

Although this is a different twist, we've had a few of these threads before that I've posted in. I stay because I've got decent employment. Going to be sixty in a few weeks. Not a good age to seek employment. Maybe not too bad in a surging economy, but very bad in a downturn. The property tax cost in NY alone makes me plan on leaving and moving to the southern Virginia/northern North Carolina area when I retire. The difference in property taxes for what I pay now vs. and an identical setup down south is about 12,500/yr. So if I get to 85 ripe old years that’s about $250k more I’d be spending to stay. And that’s simple math ignoring my year over year $800 property tax increases. Realistically, it's probably closer to $350-400k. Here’s what turned the light on for me; Pretend that you live down there now and ask yourself this question; “Hey self, want to move to NY for your retirement? Cool place – lakes, mountains, game, seasons, few natural disasters, but horrid Anti-2A laws, very restrictive in many other laws, higher utility costs and other general cost of living, hopelessly liberal policies and getting bluer by the minute. All it will cost you is a quarter million dollars more during your retirement years”. Would you go?

Dick's Sporting Goods is taking a little dive
Steuben Jerry replied to dbHunterNY's topic in General Chit Chat
Yup, my wife and I bought 3 pairs of sneakers between us this summer and fall, and another pair as a gift to one granddaughter. In the past, I would have 100% purchased those from Dick's. Didn't do that this time. I need a new winter coat and bought my last one at Dick's. Maybe JC Penney's this time. Last Christmas, our grandson needed sports stuff. Along with some gifts, gave him a $100 Dick's gift card. He wants expensive sneakers this year. Won't be from Dick's. According to my Cabela's order history, I spent over $1200 from Feb to October. Plus I know I spent over $800 at the Delaware Cabelas store this year, and used $300 worth of gift cards in the Buffalo location. Dick's would have gotten half of that total $2300 in the past. Cabela's got it all this year. Public note to the CEO of Dick's - I don't care that you don't want to sell to 18 year olds. No AR sales in your store? Don't care. Cease your anti 2A lobbying efforts and I might consider purchasing from you again. -

This showed up on my Facebook page, kind of semi related. I wonder if the low density tick areas correspond with high density opossum areas. https://www.wideopenspaces.com/know-opossums-eat-virtually-ticks-yard/

I've rarely found ticks on my deer, maybe a dozen times, and not in a few years. I do see keds on just about all my deer though. Maybe they're big ticks or probably I can't tell the difference, lol. Two years ago I was driving back from dropping deer at the processor, and kept feeling a tickle on my neck like a tag from the shirt or something. After a few times, I moved the rear view mirror to see what it was, and saw a ked crawling right by my hairline. Was glad there was no one around to see my reaction although there may have been some swerving.

How accurate were these old range finders
Steuben Jerry replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
Wow, blast from the past - I have that one laying around somewhere, but haven't seen it in years. Made in Rochester, NY if I recall correctly. -
Coworker shot a nice buck a couple of years ago and dropped it off unreported at his taxidermist. Almost a year later got a call from an Encon officer who then met him at his house to give him his ticket. Encon officer was at the taxi shop checking tags from the previous year's season. I forgot what the fine was, maybe $200?

Seeing this conversation reminded me to report my doe from this past weekend.

GET READY FOR SAFE ACT II

So with your broad brush you have classified the majority of Americans as mentally ill? Because the majority of Americans have drank alcohol. I'm pretty sure it not because of the taste. -

Congrats on the weekend harvests and good luck to the Monday hunters today. Back at work today and the rifle opener seems so long ago already. Back to living vicariously through you all until next weekend. Still have my buck tag along with my wife having hers yet. Yesterday one of the guys on the neighboring hunt club signed over a doe tag to her, so we need to get her a deer this Saturday or Sunday. I'm short on freezer room so I'm looking for the big boys only. As far as I know, the two big guys that I've only seen on camera are still around. Good luck everyone!- 10374 replies

Bada-bing. Was laying 30 yards from where I last saw it and from where I thought she got wobbly on her run. We were standing within 30 yards of her whe we backed out. No blood until the last 10 yards. Double lunged her after all. Zero varmint or predator damage and she wasn't frozen too badly. I fretted all night and was up before 4:00 waiting for good daylight. I think I worried more about this not going right because my grandson was with me and who wants to screw up in front of their grandson? Our third Black Friday doe in a row together and inner loins on the grill for him tonight. He's a Michigan fan so we're going to start to watch the game together and let him make the call on if we go out for a rain hunt this afternoon or not.- 10374 replies

No useable signal from the tower stand tonight. I'll start off with Arrgh! Out with my grandson tonight in the tower stand. Have two doe walking up my side hill woods at about 140-ish yards. It was close to last legal time, maybe 4:30. Figured we'd take the larger one and I'd still have a buck tag left. Boom, watched it get rocked through the scope, and watched it bolt like it wasn't hit. Waited 10 mins and got down. No hair, no blood, nada. Losing light, tried to pick up tracks, but there's tracks everywhere in there. 20 different trails on the route she took. I watched her run through the woods for about 150 yds, though she did look like she may have gotten squirrely just as I lost sight of her. We walked to where we could glass down the hill to see if we could spot her, but was too dark down there. Decided to back out and not risk pushing her down to that same deep creek bed that my daughter's buck went to. Snow is crunchy and loud. Out at first light for the search. This wasn't quite the plan exactly. Hope she's 50 more yards down the hill! Arrrgh!- 10374 replies

1 degree in the hilltops of 8T. Good luck to everyone this morning! I'm not out this morning, instead I'm running to Rochester and back to pick up our other 3 grandkids for the next couple of days. Our 11 yr old grandson will be hunting with me for our third Black Friday hunt in a row. Going to do the the Friday afternoon sit, and as much as he's up for for on Saturday. We got a doe together the last two years in a row, but this year I've got a buck tag left. If the opportunity arises, I may just be willing to take a buck that I'd normally pass on to send him home with antlers along with a pile of steaks. He's very involved with sports so it's getting tougher to get any time in the fall with him. I'm trying to set the hook so to speak for hunting before sports, girls, and high school sweeps him away in a couple years. Havent been out since Tuesday afternoon, so I'm ready! Good luck today!- 10374 replies

Turned out my burners are rusting (10 yr old furnace). The loose rust washed into the drain reservoir clogging a drain that should be pulling a vacuum but wasn’t due to the blockage. No vacuum wasn’t making the safety switch in the inducer and shutting down the burner. Up and running right again, but long term fix is to replace the burner which he is ordering to install next week sometime. Today’s charge and burner install service charge next week is zero dollars because I bought the service plan in April this year for $14.95/month - pretty pleased with that!! The exhaust vent was the first thing he checked. Didnt get to hunt today but glad we have a cozy house again with kids and grandkids here til Sunday. Service guy is a deer hunter. I tipped him well and told him to bring his gun when he comes to install the new burner. Wifey went to the tower for the afternoon sit and saw 9 does but no bucks.- 10374 replies
