Whole Muscle Sliced Smoked Jerky 1st Run

How thick are you slicing it.... -
I always use a hen decoy if I am field hunting... Woods hunting.. no... I like using a Jake decoy every once in a while if there is a high population of 2 year old birds or older.. fun watching them come in... But if there are a lot of Jakes, don't use it, long beards get beat up by Jake gangs and won't come in...

What a great morning I had today!!!! The opening day of Ma turkey season and I started it off with a bang, literally… LOL. Sally, Sandy and I had done some scouting on a farm we have in Ware over the weekend and things were not “awesome” by any standard… We heard very few birds and the ones we heard were Jakes, not fully mature Tom’s. Sandy went back later on and saw much more promising sign, 1 mature Tom out in the field and several younger Tom’s with a hen. With work being busy I made the tough call to pass up OT for one day to head out hunting (Tough choice.. LOL). Sandy being the gracious hunting partner she is said to me Sunday night “Seeing I know you won’t shoot a Jake (young Tom), you are only hunting 1 morning this week, why don’t you go after that mature Tom and I’ll go hunt another area because I will shoot a Jake”… So this morning we headed our separate ways, I found a nice spot down the ridge from what I was guessing was a roosting spot.. At first light as gobblers started greeting the morning I realized I had set up within 50 yards of the two Jakes we had heard/seen the previous morning.. Thinking there is no way they didn’t know I was there, I went about trying to work the mature Tom. Well, best laid plans I guess, both Jakes flew down right in front of me, gobbling, strutting, etc.. LOL The mature Tom is now gobbling off to my right and then I hear him fly off… Watch him pitch out into the field roughly 200-250 yards away… I’m thinking “well, should have gone to work… LOL”… So with him way out in the field the Jakes finally get bored with my decoy and move off to my left out of sight… The Long beard sees this and here he comes… Strutting and walking.. never gobbled.. Kept a low profile because we found the two jakes were “bullies” and could beat up the mature Tom as a team but not by themselves.. Well as he got within 100 yards the Jakes noticed him and started heading right for him.. I thought for sure it was over.. But as they made their way to him he didn’t turn to run, he angled towards me. So to slow the Jakes progress towards him I fired up the old slate call and they did exactly as I wanted… Stopped running.. started gobbling and strutting… As I kept them from advancing.. I looked up to see the long beard now topping the hill coming in to my decoy 40 yards out… So I stopped calling and tried to get ready for the shot… Now the Jakes were back on the path to run him off, so he is now angling away from my decoy trying to avoid the Jakes… At 44 yards he stopped to look back and my Ultimag bowled him over with a 2 ¼ oz load of #5’s from Winchester.. He weighed in at 20 pounds, 10” beard and as a 2 year old, has ¾” spurs…

The NWTF biologist for NY, Ma, etc gave me the figure of 20% less than the highs back in the 90's... They have a 10 year plan to improve land and acreage.... If you aren't a member, you should be... Check out the state board to find out about "Save the habitat, Save the Hunt" program.. .

Nikon with the BDC is a great option...
-
I use one called DNZ, dednutz, one piece base so les parts to be off...

If it isn't drilled and tapped.. have it done.. once that is done.. mount a red dot scope on it.. PERFECT for turkey hunting..

Seeing a Tom can breed multiple hens multiple times a day, the limiting factor becomes hens, not Toms.. Unlike whitetail deer where a buck can only breed 5-6 does a year... So by lowering the number of hens killed in the fall would help the #'s... But look into the NWTF's Save the Hunt, Save the Habitat program for NY... It's a 10 year plan to bring back the turkey #'s....

Best hunting video ever (no kill shot just reaction)
Grizz1219 replied to First-light's topic in Deer Hunting
Awesome video!! -
25-06, best rifle for whitetails in my opinion... low recoil but hits deer like it was forked lightening..
-
My favorite would be the 25-06.... Will kill anything in NY from coyotes to deer and bear... Won't beat you up with recoil either...

I've met them before.. but spent several hours with them Friday night... Just verified why I think they are the best hunting couple on TV.. I won't bash the others, I figure if people like them, watch them, then it is adding to the hunting community... But I like these two...

T/C Encore center fire accuracy
Grizz1219 replied to genesee_mohican's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I love my T/C Pro Hunter.... All the barrels shoot well... Took a Gemsbok at 309 yds with the 30-06 barrel... so for hunting, they are accurate for sure.. -
Got taken out to dinner by these two.... Ralph and Vicki from Archers Choice and The Choice TV shows... They are truly two of the best TV personalities I've ever met... As you see them on TV that is how they truly are off camera... Theirs is one of the few shows I'll watch and support... Oh.. and dinner was GREAT!!! LOL...

Thanks again@!!!!

I don't go to anmy movies starring anti gun people or left wing liberals... I may not go to a lot of movies, but won't give them my money either...
-
Yeah... trust me.. he wasn't going to get out of my sight.. LOL

It was an amazing hunt for sure.. Thanks for all the nice comments... I specifically aimed behind the front shoulder to save the meat, he was dead on his feet, if I jhad my wits about me I would have notice he was going down before round #2 went off... His head was low and he was barely walking.. BUT, it was my first moose ever and I was not letting him get out of sight.. LOL..

I got 370 lbs of meat, no bone and no fat added to the burger. Over the counter tag but like mine was, bull only or maybe an either sex tag. Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk

Before round 1 went off he was in that opening for 15 minutes... both slugs went right through him.. performed perfectly.. Had him butchered there and we brought him home in coolers... Lots of coolers.. LOL
-
Hit him perfect round one.. right behind the shoulder, exit low left lung... He was dead on his feet... 2nd roundm, I might as well thrown at him, I might have gotten closer... Third round hit him and dropped him.. He actually stood in that spot for 15 minutes.. we cut the time down on the video.. After gutting him, we cut him in half and loaded him into an Argo to get him out of the bog... The front half weighed in at over 400lbs, back half over 300... Just two of us... Yeah... Into an Argo that is just about waist high... LOL The gun was a T/C Pro Hunter in 338 Win Mag, shooting Federal Fusion 225 grain slugs..
