Interesting article - circus elephants and conservation
Elmo replied to jrm's topic in General Hunting
The reason many people today care about certain animals over others are because they saw them at a circus or a zoo when they were little kids and developed a life long emotional attachment. If people never saw a live elephant until they were an adult I wonder if they would care so much about them? The real impact will be felt when conservationist today are long gone and the children today grow up with little passion for wildlife takes over. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

I was simply stating that if he is indeed a descendent of geechee people he wouldn't need google to know who they are.

Or maybe he may simply be proud of his heritage? Possible. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

That's some crazy stuff. Glad you're okay. I'm curious as to what was the eventual cause of the brakes going haywire.

With a higher fine, they should give reward money to anyone who provides a tip that leads to a fine/prosecution. That'll alleviate some of the problem of not having enough DEC officers to catch the poachers. Maybe not all but certainly some. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

There are many police officers who take the job simply because that is a job that they can make a decent living off of but there are also those who take the job because they want to make a positive difference in society. There isn't a single one of them who don't understand that they may not make it home when ever they put on the badge and walk out the door. But it does hit me a little more when a police officer dies in the line of duty than when a life long petty criminal does. Mainly, one of them died while trying to improve my quality of life while the other died while trying to ruin my quality of life. The fact that they know this is the inherent danger that comes with their job makes it more heroic. Some of you may look at a police officer who dies in the line of duty and say it was simply another guy or gal trying to make a living like any one else. Or you can look at a police officer who dies in the line of duty and think this was someone who really wanted to make a difference and was willing to die for it. For me to be indifferent to his willingness to put his life in danger is similar to if someone jumped in front of a me and took a bullet for me to save my life and for me to shrug and say, "his dumb a## should have known he would of died saving me."

Iphone users beware/history of where you go on phone
Elmo replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in General Chit Chat
Your cellphone "pings" a radio tower every few seconds or so and the cell phone company keeps a log. Even old style, flip phones, the cell phone company can determine your location at any given time based on the length of time a "ping" takes to reach certain towers. So as long as you carry any cellphone, GPS on or not, they can track you. -

When you copy something to your hard drive, it makes magnetic indentations on the physical hard drive. When you delete a file it doesn't remove it. All it does is mark that area of the hard drive that the file was located at as being free to be written over but until your computer re-writes over it, it is still there. Hence, "ghost data". The only way to completely remove it from your computer is to a. use a software that will write gibberish into every single space located on your drive (not 100% secure) or b. put it through a degausser (a device that de-magnetizes the entire drive and flatten it out). A decent degausser cost several thousand dollars, though. -

I actually don't know much about it other than that it's May 1st. Someone mentioned that they've been celebrating it since the Roman times. -

May Day is an ancient holiday that certain countries still celebrate. It's done on May 1st and at the time of its origins, the people then had thought it was the first day of summer. Thus, May 1st is some times referred as simply May Day. First time I heard of it was when I first went to China on vacation back around 2002. I had to reschedule my flight and it was really difficult because apparently half the whole country took the entire week off and someone had to explain to me why. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
