  1. I've read some reports that some farmers down south found that the return on profits of charging some hunters $600 for a boar hunt is better than farming that they don't actually want the feral pig "problem" to go away. Some fear that their shift in business continues aggressively it may mean less and less farms which means higher and higher food prices.
  2. Sweet shooting! Great coaching!

    Happy birthday!
  4. Two fellow hunters I've ran into and chit chatted with. Which is why I noted that it was simply some thing I heard and decided to throw it out there. I use a 12 gauge pump so I've never experienced it myself.

  6. I've heard from people that 20 gauge isn't a good choice in semi-auto because there isn't enough recoil to reload the next round each and every time. Pump might be a better choice when going 20 gauge. But this is based on hearsay. I don't have 1st hand experience with it.
  7. Also, supporters of the 5.56 when they were trying to introduce it to the military theorized that the true objective in combat was not to kill the enemy soldier but rather to eliminate them from the battlefield. They believed and proven to be true that wounding a soldier eliminated two enemy soldiers instead of one. The one that was shot and the one that had to carry that soldier to safety. The 5.56 also allowed soldiers to carry much more rounds than larger calibers. The arguments over the last 3 rifles on the list was because they played their roles in controversial wars. There are large number of people who felt America should not have been involved in the Vietnam, Iraq, or Afghanistan wars. Especially true of Vietnam since the US were never attacked or threatened by Vietnam so those wars didn't have as much of an impact on American Independence as say the Revolutionary War.
  8. You have to remember at the time, soldiers were very skeptical of the 5.56 since it was a relatively new round based off of a varmint round. Until then, every one was mainly using the 30-06.
  9. It's people like that who give not just hunting a bad name but gun owners. I'm sure he's talking trash but "I'll shoot 'em?". Come on, really? Anyone coming take his license is a law enforcement officer. So he'll shoot a cop that's coming to stop him from breaking the law.
  10. It's just called Pan-Seared Sushi. Tartar (or rather Tartare) is when raw meat is diced up into tiny little bits and usually mixed with herbs and spices. It's no different than eating Kitfo at an Ethiopian restaurant which is actually pretty tasty. I trust eating raw meat at a restaurant mainly because I can sue them if anything goes wrong. I can't sue myself.
  11. First off, welcome to the site and welcome to the wonderful world of hunting. Buying a bow is like getting a car. Why do you want a car. To get from point A to point B. Sure a super expensive car might get you there a little faster but in the end, any car can get you from point A to point B. Buying a Ferrari won't make you a better driver. In the end, it all comes down to the skill of the person holding the bow. I would recommend going to a reputable professional. Have him fit you with a bow and determine your draw length and weight. Proper form and accuracy beats out power any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

  13. Every one has their obsessions. I'm lucky enough to have found someone who understands that. She encourages it actually. She knows that if I don't have that release, I get cabin fever, get grouchy, and start becoming a jerk. My obsessions are photography, sports, and hunting. She has her own obsessions as well and no matter how dumb I think hers are, I let her enjoy hers since she lets me enjoy mine. She's a huge Tim Burton and Star Trek: Next Generation fan. I just paid $220 so she can meet Patrick Stewart this weekend. By the way, Sir Patrick Stewart is a super nice guy.
  14. Those are two excellent guns! Congratulations!
  15. Hahaha! Such a coincidence. Some old lady in my building kept complaining about smelling marijuana. Everyone on the board was like..."ummm...we're pretty sure it was a skunk." But she kept going on and on about it being marijuana. Yes, that is one of the bad sides of living so close to people. Every once in a while, when I come out of the shower and need to grab a cold beer, I'll walk into the kitchen naked. My wife is always like "what if someone sees you" to which I respond, "if they don't want to get mooned, stop looking through my window."
  16. Is it legal to shoot from a boat? I thought not but I'm not positive.
  17. Sorry for your loss and my sympathies goes out to his family.
  18. Was just at collectors ammo and guns in Hopewell junction. they're selling 100 rounds of 5.56 for $47 but 525 rounds of 22LR for $68.
  19. During hunting season, I'm putting 100+ miles round trip each weekend when I go hunt. But I rather not get stuck in the snow. It'll probably be between the CR-V or the Mazda CX-5.
  20. I think he would want to be able to lug the deer back across the water if he succeeds.
  21. Have to get a new car. Here are the criteria. I hardly drive it. Other than occasional errands and summer scouting, most of my driving is during hunting season when I go hunting. This means some dirt road and snow will be involved. During the rest of the time, my dad drives the car. We're looking to go halfsies on it. I want some light off-road capabilities while he wants fuel-economy, fuel economy, and fuel economy. All his driving is in the city (groceries and picking up grand kids from school, etc). We both agree that we don't want to spend a lot on a car. Previously, we drove a Camry. The Camry was enough to allow me to do what I needed to do but there were definitely some spots I decided not to test. So the question is can the Prius do the same things a my old Camry can do or if the fuel economy not worth all the towing I'll end up paying for?
  22. Are we about to get into an up-state dentist versus down-state dentist argument?
