  1. Yeah they should have posted it tomorrow lol
  2. Still not a good option. The percentage of hunters that are successful is pretty low, and it doesnt have much to do with a lack of deer. The other issue is land access, many areas just dont have alot of public land, and getting permission for private land isnt exactly a cake walk. For example, on one of the farms I hunt, not everyone that hunts there ends up getting a deer every year. There are a few of us that are very successful year in and year out, and we are the ones that the farmer depends on to make any sort of dent in the numbers. This past season, I was out of the game with a knee injury for a huge part of the season, and only ended up with 1 deer from the farm. Normally I take 2 or 3. One of the other guys did not get a chance to hunt as much as he usually does as well. The take was quite a bit lower than usual this year because of that. If you start limiting guys to only a few deer each every year, you will have a hard time keeping the deer in check in many areas.
  3. That would be a horrible idea for the zones with high deer numbers.
  4. I have a Yamaha Viking side by side, and while there are a few things it will do that a tractor cant, the price tag wasnt all that much cheaper, and the tractor can do far more work wise.
  5. That is what I am going with. I have been researching the snot out of every tractor in the 40 - 50 hp range for months. I priced out a JD, Kubota, Kioti and Case IH. JD and Kubota had some nice features on them, but the price tag to go with them, and then some if you ask me. Case IH was too pricey for the same features. The Kioti had basically the same, if not a little better lift capacity, PTO power, etc as the comparable other brands, not as many bells and whistles, but a great price tag. We are picking up the DK4510HS soon.
  6. Heres a good read for you https://www.qdma.com/mature-bucks-needs-em/
  7. It has to do with the rut. Basically, with a better age structure, combined with a buck to doe ratio that is close to 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 the main rut becomes shorter, and the smaller, later ruts become less frequent. In turn, fawning times are not as spread out in the spring, and deer are at a better age/size for dealing with a harsh winter, etc.
  8. Wouldnt that still allow 1 1/2s with 4 points on a side to be taken?
  9. Maybe because some people have 1 or 2 days to hunt in the season and want some meat. Maybe they shoot them thinking they are doe. There are multiple reasons why they get shot. Before I really knew how to tell the difference between button bucks and does, I shot quite a few thinking they were does.
  10. But they still have the opportunity if they have the tag for it. With these proposed ARs, there is zero opportunity, doesnt matter what tag you have. It takes away all choice, and shoves someone elses values down your throat.
  11. They base it on a percentage that they figure arent reported. Its kind of a guessing game, Which is why mandatory reporting of all tags (filled or unfilled) should be put in place. No report, no tags the next season.
  12. They issue as many tags as they do because on average, only a low percentage of them are filled and reported.
  13. Other states do it, NY can as well. The problem is, the people that are trying to push this garbage through, arent really concerned about herd health or the realities in some of these areas, they just want to make sure the neighbor doesnt shoot the young buck that they let walk the week before. They just use herd health, etc as leverage to justify pushing their hunting goals on everyone. I will not agree with forcing people into things like that. If they are going to do something to really help the herd, they should do it the right way. Regardless, it wont affect my hunting, as I dont typically hunt in those areas. My zone was not included.
  14. And you obviously dont know much about some of the areas where they are proposing to put these restrictions in place. I realize that the majority of deer 2 1/2 and older have more than 4 points on one side, but I also know that a large percentage of yearling bucks in this area in particular have 4 or more points on one side, so it makes the AR they are proposing to be minimally effective at protecting the most desirable yearling bucks. A spread based restriction would be the only way to be truly effective here.
  15. But if the antler is short enough to be hidden easily by the ear, mistaken identity happens easily, especially by more casual hunters.
  16. Under the proposed rules for 8N, just down the road from our farm, this yearling would be legal But this 3 1/2 wouldnt be Before you guys say anything, both of these deer have most likely set foot in 8N, and we have deer that meet these categories every single year. Its not an oddity or anything like that.
  17. But you can still shoot one with less than a 3" antler and put it on a doe permit.
  18. Probably not these ones. I have a flock down at the farm that I have been tracking since last summer. I know the roosting area and the typical paths they are taking away from it, so that will be where we go that weekend. Unfortunately I dont have permission for the land behind our place yet. Ill be working on that in the weeks to come.
  19. So last weekend I was out on our back deck at daybreak and swore I heard a bunch of gobbling way back over the hill behind our property. There were so many crows cawwing that I couldnt be sure. Yesterday, I was out on the deck firing up the grill to make dinner and I heard a loud gobble, so I turned and looked in the sheep pasture out back and sure enough, 3 big gobblers out there hammering away. I didnt even know we had any turkeys around, as I havent seen any till now. I took a quick pic through the binos.
  20. I have the Yamaha Viking, has great downhill braking, and is a bit wider than any of the others, so its less tippy. I looked at the Pioneer, but it just didnt fit the bill for me, and the price was too high for what it was. Id have bought a JD Gator first at that price point.
