WNYBuckHunter's Outdoor Journal
WNYBuckHunter replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Member Hunting Journals
Spent this weekend at my daughter's hunters ed class. She passed with flying colors! Now she is all ready to go for bow season next year. We are also talking about heading out to Colorado to visit family and go elk hunting next year. Ive been looking into the trip for a couple of years now, and now that she will be ready to go, Im going to start putting it together. Luckily, unless something changes, my family lives in one of the only OTC elk tag zones. Im also going to look into antelope just in case we both get our elk with enough time to try for something else as well. Yesterday, I stopped at the farm to take a peek at plots, they are still doing great. Heres some pics... -
Heres about the average size for the sugar beets so far. Id say 1/3 of the size of the brassicas. I know they are slower growing, dont like to be crowded, etc. I hope they will do better next year planed by themselves.

You do realize that the early ML season that has been talked about will only be put into place in the regions that need to knock the population down, the same areas that they put the 2 week antlerless season in. I have not seen anywhere they have suggested it would be for the whole state.

You arent getting bashed about your opinion. I am sorry that you feel that way about the QDMA, but what you have to realize is that the NY State chapter was previously a shambles, you had some leadership that used their voice through the organization to pump their personal views, and not much else. They werent very active with things, and after a while, national recognized what was going on, and other people stepped up to the plate to put more effort into doing things that make a difference politically and socially in regards to hunting and other things in NY. The biggest issue with the QDMA having the ability to gain recognition in the DEC and political circles in this state was the low membership numbers. Thats changing, and changing pretty quickly. I guess I can understand the doubt some may have based on what has gone on in this state in the past, but now might be a great time to take another look at the organization. Attend a few of the local events, see what we are doing.

I never took a shot at her, and I dont usually try to hit them in the hindquarters.

Why would you have to kill the does to measure the fetuses? You could simply do an ultrasound and get the measurements. They do that stuff with humans every day.
-
As far as the article goes, are they talking about state wide numbers?
-
Its a not for profit, the majority of their income goes into research, political programs, etc etc.

3 1/2 legs on this one. Id like to see her put on the ground this year. http://vid95.photobucket.com/albums/l160/jwolfe1976/IMAG0149_zpsamnzthbm.mp4

Yeah I paid $10 for a lb of seed this year. I am planning to put them in rows either with a row planter or a drill. Depends on how close I want to get the rows. Grow, Ill see if I can grab pics of how they are doing so far the next time Im down there.

I gut them where they drop.

Why not just practice with the Nockturnals? Shoot spots, not groups and you dont have to worry about breaking them.
-
I just acquired a pack of Rage Crossbow X heads. 125 grain, 2" cut. Im gonna try them this year, I hope I dont regret it.

This year I tried planting sugar beets in with one of my brassica plots. I knew it was pretty late for them, and that they dont like competition, but i figured id give them a shot. It wasnt much money for the seeds. Not a ton of them came in, the rest of the brassicas crowded them out, but some did, and they have done ok considering. Have any of you had any experience with them? If so, any pointers? Im thinking about really making an attempt at a plot of just sugar beets next year.

FSW would be a great one to chime in here, and let us know how they force does into estrous to collect scents, etc. Im pretty sure I already know, Id just like him to explain it.

Wait, free thinkers? So are you saying that those that practice QDM arent free thinkers, as in you are calling them sheep in a round about way? Thats nice.
-
I use them in my 308. 3 rounds downrange last year, and 3 deer in the freezer. Closest was @ 50 or 60 yards, furthest was a little over 100. I didnt have a chance to test them out further than that, but my rifle loves them. Paper took a beating at 200 yards when I sighted it in lol.

If you dont want everyone to have access to it, dont put it on the internet lmao

Seems to be a guy frustrated with losing his hunting land to leases. Understandable, but barking up the wrong tree. QDM is not TDM, and does not preach about not killing deer, or holding out for giant bucks. You really should do some reading and looking into exactly what QDM is all about.

For me, it all depends on how the land is used. If human activity is normal, like on a working farm, etc, then I dont sweat it. If its land that is normally never touched, then it might cause an issue.
